EVERY K-Pop fan should be required to stan at least one nugu group

  • That's the only way for people to learn and understand what the true struggle for popularity is like.

They would see how entitled they are as fans and how much they take success for granted.

Gone would be the days of calling a group a flop for "only" charting in the top 30, when you stan a group that can't chart in the top 500 and sold 10 albums inception to date.

Someone like me, who stanned Mamamoo from when the only fans in the crowd were family members, has the perspective and context to fully appreciate a group's successes.

So go find a nugu group to stan. Maybe multiple. Humble yourselves. And realize that 95% of groups are playing on Hard Mode with only one life. No saves.

  • I don't think it's a requirement. It's just like American music where most mainly listen to the top 40. I believe that's how it works in most industries. There might be an indie artist a person follows, but most just stick to the top 40.

I do find people that say kpop is boring is most likely not listening to stuff outside of the big 4 and popular groups. You can find interesting stuff outside of the popular groups and I'll say it feels more rewarding when you see them level up. Watching Idle's growth from the jump was the great thing to experience.

On the flip side watching groups continue to fail to gain fans hurts. It makes you question everything because you believe the group should be more successful, but in reality they missed their window of opportunity to rise. NUGUs don't have the same luxury as popular groups because they can't recover from a flop release. So, I see why some don't even bother being fans of NUGU level groups because 99% of them will fail.

  • I stanned the nuguest of nugu songs a few years ago, calling it perhaps the best BG song of that year. :yesr:

I also stanned numerous songs from nugu groups like Classy, Limelight, Weeekly, Cherry Bullet and others. :yesr:

No, it needs to be a requirement, so we can put an end to the unapologetic ignorance and arrogance in the conversations about success metrics and top acts.

Experience gives perspective , and seeing the grind of a truly nugu group would enlighten a lot of people to just how perilous the path to success actually can be

I’m not gonna Stan a group that could disband tomorrow

The euphoria of watching a nugu rise is incomparable to any other experience in K-Pop.

I've been able to experience it twice (EXID, MAMAMOO). It was simply the greatest.

I agree that it's a requirement to have a proper discussion about kpop. For example,a person can't say kpop is boring if they only follow big 4 and very popular groups. They most likely will have the worst takes due to limited knowledge and experience of all levels of kpop. I think that's why we get certain talks like certain groups are flopping. In reality the group isn't flopping because they're getting good sales, good size fanbase, and can have a successful tour.

  • Does staning JYP Girl groups count?

  • I stan current mamamoo. Does that count

Based on how many people screamed for Hwasa during KCON LA? Nope.

People who only stan big company groups end up being completely disillusioned about the industry and the way it operates for most of the groups out there.

They can't even fathom a life of never being nominated for music shows, songs being cut short to fit in the bigger acts and fanmeetings that could barely fill up a tent in some cases.

Nor will they ever experience the joy of seeing those groups potentially growing into one of the big players over time.

Your post is cringe. An idols struggle is not your struggle. Stop being so obsessed with “what they went through” it’s so cringe to read.

You Stan something if you like the music. Anything more and you need to step back and reevaluate your priorities. Esp at your big age.

No, you're just being stupid. It's really not that deep.

I think it's pretty well established that my priorities in life are fine. I could liquidate, stop working for a decade and be comfortable. I think I'm pretty good at making decisions. Don't ever think you're qualified to talk about how I handle my life, especially at my "big age", which clearly would indicate I've been doing this longer than you and am most certainly better at it than you. Compartmentalization is something adults can do--maybe you need some remedial education on how to do that. Adulting, that is.

  • No IM saying it’s not that deep. The way you’re making it that deep because of your obsessive para socialism.

Whether an idol struggles or not doesn’t matter at all. It’s irrelevant. That’s their life, not yours. Their connection to you is the product they’re selling and your assessment of the said product. Nothing more.

No one “needs” to follow any nugus.

No one “needs” to follow any nugus.

You "need" to stop being idiotic. I know that's a challenge for you, that has proven impossible for you to conquer probably your whole life, but I want you to try harder than you've ever tried before, because just maybe you can make a miracle happen today. We're rooting for you. Now I want you to focus up and pay close attention to what I'm about to say, and then take all the time you need to process this extremely simplistic concept: it was just a joke to open the floor to discuss nugu groups.

Everybody else was able to pick up on that and participate. You decided to instead go on another one of your unhinged coke rants about absolutely nothing that merits my attention.

In other words, shut the hell up.

  • so you enjoyed the rise of mamamoo more than the rise of the pants?

It's not even a fair fight or comparison.

Watching Mamamoo grow from nugu to top group has been my most fulfilling and rewarding experience in K-Pop.

Then I got the dopamine effect again with Hwasa, who ended up being the individually most popular member, when she was constantly shaded and attacked for her looks and personality very early on in their careers.

Nothing I've experienced with K-Pop, not even the sudden arrival of NewJeans, will ever compare to seeing Mamamoo rise from nothing and accomplish everything they set to accomplish as rookies.

  • Hwasa wasn't shaded for her looks, she was shaded for her choice of makeup...or I guess it would be her MUA. 25 but her makeup made her look like at least 35.

  • interesting, I’m sure it’s very satisfying to see but it’s still satisfying watching a big 4 group rise up, even if it’s less so. Also most nugu groups aren’t gonna be the next mamamoo so you got lucky I guess

  • Hwasa wasn't shaded for her looks, she was shaded for her choice of makeup...or I guess it would be her MUA. 25 but her makeup made her look like at least 35.

...Do you know who you're talking to? You're really trying to tell the person who has been stanning Mamamoo since their rookie year what kind of derogatory comments they were subjected to?

Hwasa herself has spoken at length about these topics. She has been dealing with harsh Korean beauty standards and lookism since she was in middle school. I even edited together an entire video about it in the past. Hwasa empowered herself and made it through that gauntlet thanks in large part to building her self-confidence through music, specifically Beyonce and Rihanna, both of whom she adores.

But just to give you an example of what I mean:

During their rookie year, some loser knetizens used to say things like "Mamamoo would be a pretty girl group if you just removed Hwasa", so yes, she absolutely was subjected to all kinds of hate comments due to her looks.

And they body shamed her too. When Mamamoo did an AMA on reddit, and a redditor commented Hwasa on her amazing legs, her response was incredulous and surprised because "they're not considered that attractive here". So, she has been through a lot of bullshit in her career, and even recently with that stupid forced controversy over her gesture at a college festival performance, but that's another story.

And that's your history lesson from this MooMoo.

  • interesting, I’m sure it’s very satisfying to see but it’s still satisfying watching a big 4 group rise up, even if it’s less so. Also most nugu groups aren’t gonna be the next mamamoo so you got lucky I guess

You just have to go through it to truly appreciate it. One day I'll actually make the thread, but I cannot tell you how many people back in the day, unprovoked mind you, told me that Mamamoo would amount to nothing and would disband in no time. Even after they rose to top group status, people still routinely dismissed them. That's why I never let go of summer 2017.

And it wasn't luck. They earned it. I knew they would rise and that belief was validated.

Plus it wasn't the only time. EXID happened.

Okay, that was more lucky. One fancam to rule them all.

The most infamous fancam in K-Pop history. Totally reversed the trajectory of the group.

  • oh I get it, someone here claimed Baemon will be the next Nmixx! But I know one day they will rise to the top and I will be validated

Don’t think I’ve ever seen that fancam though, wasn’t aware of that little piece of nugu lore

EXID was on the verge of disbandment. They staked everything on Up and Down. Initially it didn't chart well at all, but then the fancam happened and the rest is history.

Hani even found the fancammer at an event after their huge rise up the charts and into mainstream popularity and thanked him from the stage

Facts seeing a moment like these makes it worth it. I don't think you get the same gratification when popular groups win. Seeing your favorite group work hard to achieve something is always great. I think it also creates a stronger fandom because fans are most likely going to be more loyal because growth is more organic.
