IU's humuilation at the Baeksang Awards will end the amalgamation of KPop and KDramas

  • The Baeksang awarded the Best Actress award to Yoon Eunhye of Baby Vox in 2008.

But not much people paid attention to it at that time, since the Baeksang only became relevant in late 2010s as cable dramas and OTTs became bigger and no one awarded them separately other than Baeksang.

And then it awarded the Best Actress Award to Seo Hyunjin for "Another Miss Oh" in 2017. However, Seo Hyunjin's career as an idol was quite brief (She was a member of Milk, a short lived SM idol when Lee Sooman was not involved with the company)

After the Baeksang became relevant, only Lee Junho of 2PM received the Best Actor Prize in 2022, but that was a consolation prize to not give Lee Seyoung, whose career has completely collapsed since then, for the Red Sleeves.

And by that time Junho basically stopped being an idol and was fully an actor.

At that time Lee Seyoung was defeated by Kim Taeri, who destroys the Senior Singer in 2025.

Not winning a Prize is one thing, but being shunned by all actors is something else.

The only actor who bothered to greet IU, other than the cast of Tangerines, was Byun Wooseok, who will star in the new drama with the Senior Singer.

Kim Taeri did not greet the Senior Singer.

Go Minsi, who had attended the Senior Singer's concert last year, did not greet the Senior Singer.

And, to add to the insult, Gong Seungyeon, who will also appear in the upcoming IU-Byun Wooseok drama (probably for the role of the sub-heroine), was there but did not bother to greet the Senior Singer, despite of the fact that her younger sister Jungyeon saw the Singer quite a few times before.

In other words, the Senior Singer was shunned by virtually all actors in the award, who treated her as not someone who belonged in their league.

Basically, they told her, without moving their mouths, that to be considered as an actress and be part of them, the Senior Singer will have to abandon her singing, and become a 100% actor like Lee Junho.

It is extremely unlikely for Lee Jieun to be considered for best actress , ever, unless she is willing to spend years and years to purse the Best Actress award by becoming a full actress and acting for ten years, like Lee Byunghun who seeked the Blue Dragon Movie Award for 7 times, or Leonardo Dicaprio who spent more than 20 years chasing the elusive Academy Best Actor Award.

And, given her income is mostly derived from her singing activities, it is unlikely that the Senior Singer will abandon singing to try to get the award. Her next drama, a romcom, won't win any awards.

IU was made into a laughing stock of the world in 2014 from MAMA, given the Lifetime Achievement Award at the age of 21, so MAMA could give two Grand Prizes to EXO. She has never made it up with MAMA, after 11 years, and never will.

She has not posted anything to her instagram since yesterday, not even photos with her child actors. After she was given her lifetime achievement award from MAMA in 2014 she released the song Knees to calm her irate fans

but this time she is doing nothing, showing that this shunning really shocked her, probably the first time in her career that she was shocked this much.

It is likely that she will concentrate more into singing, showing up in some cheapo romcoms time to time, and won't really try serious dramas again until she turns 40 or so when there would be lesser pressure on her to compete with what would be the 6th gen of KPop.

    ===

Yeri of Red Velvet , after leaving SM, has begun using her real name, Kim Yerim, as an actress (she joined Joo Jihoon's company), making a clean break from her past as an idol. Red Velvet might promote again, but probably once in a blue moon, and she will now be mostly known as Kim Yerim.

It seems that there is kind of an omerta or something among Korean actors that to be accepted as a true actor, one has to abandon the moniker they used to have when they were idols.

As more idols are busier with their foreign concert schedules, the shunning of IU, who used Lee Jieun until early 2024, will probably close the door of acting for KPop figures, until they are mature enough to abandon their idol monikers and fully go into acting.

Kim Taehyung does not hide that he wants to go back to acting (he acted in the drama Hwarang but because BTS' schedule was getting tighter his character was killed off during the middle of the drama), but if he wants to be a true actor, he will have to abandon his idol career, just like the others, or be shunned.

  • Why are you acting like this was IU's first time nominated at Baeksang? This was her 4th nomination, and she didn't pull back from either singing or acting any of the previous 3 times.

In the first 3 nominations she was not really taken as a serious candidate. For my mister, Kim Hyeja of the Light in Your Eyes was going to win and for hotel del luna, not considered to be a serious drama, Kim Heeae of the World of the Married was going to win. And Dream bombed badly so IU was not going for any awards then.

This was, and probably will be, her first and probably last shot for that award. Which is why some fans were really angry.

It did not help than no actors, other than the Tangerine cast and Byun Wooseok, who will act with IU in the upcoming drama, bothered to greet her at all, basically telling her that she does not belong there.

  • I am surprised they didn't give Jang Nara anything, like she won the Grand Prize at SBS.. Baeksang could have give out 2 best actress awards. 1 for Taeri and other for Nara

Again Jang Nara's past as a singer became a huge demerit.

  • Isn't Lee Seyoung still getting main roles though?

All of her roles since Red Sleeves are in forgettable, cheapo romcoms. The blow was decisive, and she is now relegated to playing light roles. Her next drama would be the Remarried Empress, chief leads Shin Minah, Joo Jihoon and Lee Jongsuk. Shin Minah is married to Joo Jihoon - Lee Seyoung will play JJH's mistress. As a result Shin Minah divorces Joo Jihoon and remarries Lee Jongsuk. In other words Lee Seyoung now has regressed to playing support roles.

She knows this is her only chance, for a looong time. It is unlikely that she will be given roles like that when she is still relevant. She might win when she is 45 or so but what is the use?

Talking about the next time is meaningless for someone like her. There was no 'next time' from MAMA after 11 years and she will never attend it. It is unlikely that she will attend Baeksang again as well.

  • Ladies and Gentlemen, a Why Knock post:

Yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap

  • IU did really great in WLGYT but Taeri's performance was outstanding.

    If you must compare :

IU in WLGYT >> Taeri 2521

    But

Taeri in Jeongnyeon > IU in WLGYT

( I said it as huge fan of WLGYT drama btw)

And it's not end of the world. I believe there are many opportunities for IU as long as she maintains her reputation and enthusiasm for act

  • Probably not.

Her instagram post after this disaster only showed photos of herself and the child actresses who played her, not even Park Bogum or Byun Wooseok.

And her official youtube channel released the news that her DVD for the world tour will be released, meaning she is going back to be a singer, after her schedule drama finishes filming probably in the middle of summer.

Unlike Lee Byunghun or Leonardo DiCaprio, who could try again and again and again, IU has her singing obligation and cannot spend years pursuing the Award. She has to spend at least every other year doing concerts.

There might be some opportunity when she is about 45 (1,365) years old but what good would that do? Jang Nara,at 42 years old, played a divorce attorney going through her own divorce and was nominated for this (and also got cold feet). At that age if there is any choice role it will first go to Kim Taeri since IU would not be that marketable to the world by that age.

Like Lee Seyoung, whose spirit was decisively broken at the Baeksang 3 years old, IU will only pursue dramas which won't win awards but will be profitable, for quite a long time. Being shunned by all actors there, including some who attended her concert before or someone who is clearly aware of her and would be showing up in her next drama, seems to have been too much.

  • Me: Hey ChatGPT, summarize Koncky's long ass mumbling!

ChatGPT: I think the person who wrote this think piece is drunk.

    Me: Thank you.

I am surprised they didn't give Jang Nara anything, like she won the Grand Prize at SBS.. Baeksang could have give out 2 best actress awards. 1 for Taeri and other for Nara

SBS Awards have zero meaning, they give Awards for their own shows.😂

    ------

On a serious note. I can't believe this guy is still on AKP and no one banned him. Like, all he does is shit on IU!

Both IU and Taeri deserve the win, I said on Twitter already. Taeri should've won the Daesang, not some random cooking show, and IU the Best Actress! But anyone who follows K-culture and Baeksang, knows that they're using IU's popularity for many years now. I mean, that's the whole reason they always pick 1 mainstream, but bang average drama every year.

Last year, it was "Queen of Tears", this year they made it even worse with "Lovely Runner", because they nominated one of the worst-written kdrama of all-time for the "Best Drama" and "Best Actors" category as well. Honestly, that's more ridiculous than not giving the Award to IU, when we had shows like "Mr. Plankton" for example.

BTW, anyone who says, IU is just an Idol turned actress is dumb as hell! She debuted in 2010 as an actress, and some people want to discredit a 15 YEAR long acting career. When she debuted as an actress, she was basically a nobody. People acting as if she's just your average Idol actress, when she was a contender for the "Best Actress" category at Cannes Film Festival for her role in "BROKER" as well. Korea sees her as a celeb, people outside Korea sees her as a real actress.

  • Kim taeri was just better this year.

That's obvious, but giving the Daesang to a cooking show makes the whole award show ridiculous.

They should make a separate category for variety shows. That would be a win-win for everybody. They could give an award to a variety show every year.

  • Kim taeri was just better this year.

If that is the cass she has to win every year she is doing dramas, which means no one wins when she is in town.

Baeksng did that to some actresses, but at that time at least no one paid attention to it.

This was simply a blackballing of an actress who is identified more often as a singer, that's all.

  • If that is the cass she has to win every year she is doing dramas, which means no one wins when she is in town.

No it doesn’t mean that. It depends on the script and the scope of the character as well. For example 2521 wasn’t that great of a show where her full acting was displayed where as a show like Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born shows her at her very best. It’s a very acting intensive role.IU is a passable actress but she has never be extraordinary. And that’s alright.

  • Entertaining thread per usual with OP.

IU is highly overrated as a singer (my Izone girls clear her in terms of song quality, stage performance, even vocal tone from the likes of Joyuri, etc). But she is an Emmy caliber actress easily, i've only seen literal 1 minute clips of the Tangerine series on TW and i'm practically bawling in front of my monitor :sob-bunny: .

What i want to know from OP is how my Izone actress line are doing...

    - Hyewon going viral with Hyeri's Friendly Rivalry but i'm scared for her, she left 8D Entertainment and is now with another rando agency called Peace Entertainment who apparently only represents rookie actors.

    - Minju has been receiving massive praise for her role in a legit big screen internationally distributed movie Hear Me: Our Summer plus her supporting appearance in Undercover High School. She is at least with a legit agency in SOOP.

    - Yuri is about to go thermonuclear with Season 3 of Squid Games. I think she'll play a much bigger role this season than last and we'll finally see her break out. I still think she will be the second coming of IU.

  • No it doesn’t mean that. It depends on the script and the scope of the character as well. And , like Lee Seyoung whose spirit was irreversibly broken when her role was more intensive than Kim Taeri's role in 2521, IU's spirit seems to have broken decisively. She has spoken by releasing the news of the Hereh concert movie, showing she will go back to singing.

And that closes door for other KPop idols to become serious actors as well. They showed that KPop figures are not welcome in acting. Gong Seungyeon, whose sister is a KPop idol shunning IU was a big blow. Even though her sister is a Kpop idol, and she herself apparently trained for such before, she does not treat idols turning into actors, even someone like IU, not belonging in her league.
