Why Big 3 losing their ability to get national hits?

  • besides a few rare exceptions like Aespa, national hits among Big 3 in the last 5 years has been almost non-existent

before that, the Big 3 would even have national hits at debut. now they may go an entire contract length without a true national hit like NCT, Nmixx

  • Is it only Big 4?

Music listening has become Silos, with social media and very few songs cut across fandoms and then further agree demographics.

    Hence national hits are tough.

That's why they are calling IU, the last National Singer in Korea, because she still reaches most demographics.

  • SM groups have done fine :?: NCT has been around for ages you can’t expect them to keep pumping out hits after hits :huuh: Riize and aespa have done well and have hits! Wasn’t Riize one of the only recent boy groups to peak in top 10 in charts maybe hit 1 ( I don’t remember)

YG hasn’t done too well with 4th/5th gen tbh! Treasure was promising but i don’t know what happened :?: BM is showing progress and each comeback does better but compared to BP and 2NE1 it’s been lackluster! I don’t think it helps that YG groups usually debut with hits!

JYP is the most worrying one! Their latest boy group has zero hype :!: At least Nmixx had some hype but I barely see anyone talk about the boy group  I don’t even remember their name! I don’t understand how it got from Stray kids popularity to theirs

  • IMO BG’s were never capable of having huge hits. Save a few. Same for some GG’s as well.

What happened was downloads used to be weighted more hence previous generation BG’s look better than they actually are.

I think much of 2nd gen would fade to irrelevancy under current streaming era as well.

  • I don't know much about the domestic music industry and the taste of music, but western/international music are bigger these days compared to earlier?

And also, I feel it's a bit fewer "catchy" songs these days, songs that easy can become hits among the general public. Songs like Gee, I don't Care and Oh! for example. Groups like Babymonster have few really catchy ones, even if they have good songs. and NJs type of songs are not that kind of songs that are "national hits" material either.

Western music has also gone down significantly. Streaming has killed the buying impact. Taylor is the only one selling albums properly otherwise no one else is.

well of cource everything is about streaming these days, but that don't make it harder to get hits? Stuff go can go virual and spread super fast these days. But sure, music also go away faster and hits have a shorter lifespan before people jumping to the next song. When it was mainly phycial and radio things was a bit slower and hits steadly got momentum to grow to become a hit so maybe streaming makes it harder that way.

If we're talking Korea, Next Level, Supernova, gidle's Fate, Ditto had big longevity

  • I think k-pop groups in general aren't as appealing as it used to be anymore. Bgs for whatever reason became really niche even when the fandom is massive. And only a few girl groups maintained their popularity. Even aesp as debut was a flop compared to other big3 groups. So there was definitely a decrease of interest over the years. maybe k-pop scandals like rising sun contributed to it
