2024 has certainly been an eventful year for kpop. While it brought some disappointing moments that exposed the harsh realities of the industry and the darker side of fan behavior on social media, it also marked the painful farewells to some incredible groups (like Weki Meki, Cherry Bullet, and Nature).
Despite these challenges, when it comes to the music, I have to admit that this has been one of the strongest years since I became a K-pop fan - arguably the strongest since 2020.
Throughout the year, I made it a point to immerse myself in as many kpop releases as possible, with the goal of curating songs for my personal playlists and, of course, narrowing down my favorite tracks and albums as the year came to a close. Now that we’ve reached the final day of 2024, it’s time to share my top picks with you.
Let’s start with my top 15 favorite albums (both full and mini) of the year.
15. EVNNE - Un: SEEN (Mini album)
5th gen boy groups are proving to be considerably stronger than their 4th gen counterparts, and EVNNE has been a standout group to follow since their debut. Imagine a blend of NCT's dynamic energy with VIXX's (their fellow Jellyfish sunbaenims) sophisticated flair: quite an intriguing mix. This releases merges what kpop fans often describe as "noise"(bass-heavy, experimental beats) with tasteful, memorable, and charismatic vocal moments. Their sound leans more toward the NCT and P1Harmony spectrum of "noisy kpop," than that of Stray Kids or ATEEZ.
EVNNE's recent comeback album (RIDE or DIE) marks a slight shift in their musical direction, embracing a more accessible, easy-listening sound, reminiscent of the path P1Harmony has taken. However, they have managed to retain their signature quality and cohesiveness. I’m excited to see what 2025 holds for them. Big thumbs up to the group, and especially to Seungeon, whose vocal tone I’m particularly fond of.
Best track: Festa
14. ZEROBASEONE - CINEMA PARADISE (Mini album)
After a somewhat underwhelming debut year (with the exception of the vibrant and addictive "In Bloom"), ZB1 has surprisingly delivered a very strong year in terms of music. When I first listened to this album, I never would have imagined it would become one of my favorites of the year. Many of the tracks lingered in my mind, growing on me with each listen. The best word to describe this mini-album would be refreshing, and it's a word I would also use to characterize ZB1 as a whole. There's a timeless quality to their music; it never feels stale, and is highly replayable, always drawing you back for more.
A personal highlight for me is the track "Road Movie." It’s intriguing from the start, with an unconventional structure, a tasteful arrangement, and sudden beat changes (very reminiscent of NMIXX!). The chorus is heavenly, with stunning vocals from Zhang Hao and Taerae, paired with compelling rap lines from Matthew.
Had "The Sea" not been included (though I do find it a charming cover), the sequence of "Good So Bad," "Kill the Romeo," "Insomnia," and "Road Movie" would easily be one of the strongest runs in any kpop album this year. Unfortunately, "The Sea" and the inclusion of the Korean version of "Yura Yura" slightly drag the album down for me.
While it’s still too early to say whether ZB1 will ultimately be regarded as one of the top groups of the 5th generation, their 2024 release puts them in an excellent position to secure a place among the best.
Best track: Road Movie
13. RIIZE - RIIZING (Mini album)
I'll approach this a bit differently by starting with and highlighting the negatives: one major issue I have with this release is the lack of cohesiveness between the tracks. While this album is a compilation of previously released songs with a few new additions, this has been a recurring challenge for me when it comes to RIIZE: I'm still confused and unsure of their musical direction. I enjoy their individual tracks, but I personally wouldn't group them together into one cohesive album. Additionally, the whole Seunghan fiasco was a disappointing turn of events, which has affected my excitement for their future. While I’m not as optimistic about their trajectory as I was a year ago, I still wish the boys the best in their careers.
On a positive note, the "Boom Boom Bass", "Impossible", and "Honestly" trilogy is truly irresistible and fits them exceptionally well. There's not a single track on this album that I dislike. Overall, it's a solid release and serves as a good introduction to the group.
Best track: Impossible
12. IVE - IVE SWITCH (Mini album)
IVE is quickly becoming a recurring name on lists of best annual releases. They never fail to deliver, consistently providing high-quality music that cements their position for me as one of the top active girl groups. Every track on "IVE SWITCH" is a resounding YES, starting with the powerful and dynamic "Heya", followed by the intriguing "Accendio", the irresistibly catchy "Blue Heart", the ethereal "Ice Queen", the charming "WOW", and the Afrobeat-inspired "RESET". This album ignites a desire to get up and dance. As always, Liz's vocals are a standout, and I must also highlight the noticeable vocal growth of Leeseo and Wonyoung.
Best track: Accendio
11. NCT DREAM - DREAM( )SCAPE (Mini album)
"NCT DREAM( )SCAPE" is undoubtedly the most experimental and intriguing album from NCT Dream to date. Listening to this release, it's hard to believe this is the same group behind hits like "Chewing Gum" and "Hot Sauce" (both absolute bangers, by the way). As a self-proclaimed NCT connoisseur, I must say that "DREAM( )SCAPE" reveals a very different, darker, and grittier side of the group. This moodier vibe had only been hinted at in earlier tracks like "Quiet Down" and "119", and is fully realized in the subsequent tracks "Best of Me" and "No Escape".
The mini-album hooks you from the very first intro track, "icantfeelanything", which seamlessly (or... smoothly) transitions into the groove of "Smoothie". It is then followed by the gritty "BOX", penned by LDN Noise, the alluring "Carat Cake", the dreamy and inspirational "UNKNOWN", and finally ending with a sentimental and uplifting R&B ballad "Breathing".
In my opinion, this year has been NCT Dream's strongest musical year since their debut. The range they've showcased is both impressive and exciting to witness, as it marks a clear evolution and growth in their sound.
NCT Dream’s vocal delivery is, as always, nothing short of amazing. I remain a proud fan, and keep admiring their growth and artistry.
Best track: icantfeelanything
10. NMIXX - Fe3O4: BREAK (Mini album)
And speaking of strong musical years, I knew 2024 was off to a promising start the moment NMIXX dropped this mini album at the beginning of the year. As someone with a particular fondness for experimental, boundary-pushing kpop, I find NMIXX's "Mixxpop" sound utterly captivating. With their exceptional vocal talent (both live and in the studio) and their impressive dance performances, NMIXX has truly established themselves as one of the finest acts of their generation, consistently delivering quality releases.
So far, "Fe3O4: BREAK" stands as my favorite album of theirs. A project that includes gems like "BOOM," "Run for Roses," "DASH," and "Soñar" is simply unmissable. Interestingly, my two favorite NMIXX tracks of the year aren't even featured on this album! I'll save those for my upcoming best songs of the year list, which I'll share tomorrow.
Best track: Soñar (Breaker)
My sweet underrated king Suho. One of the biggest kpop treasures for me.
Suho's solo music stands apart from both EXO's signature sound and the solo work of his fellow members. His style leans more towards soft rock, with hints of Britpop and indie rock (genres that happen to be among my personal favorites). His 3rd mini album introduces a slightly groovier, synth-driven, and more retro vibe compared to his earlier releases. If you were a fan of "Hurdle" from his 2nd mini album, there's a good chance you'll find yourself equally into "1 to 3." This album feels like it would be the perfect soundtrack for an intimate live performance, whether in a downtown London live music club, or a tent at a summer festival in Europe.
Each track is impeccably produced, with a crystal-clear mix that highlights the quality of the work. As always, Suho's vocal delivery and technique are nothing short of masterful. Honestly, is there anything this man can't do?
Best track: 1 to 3
