My top 15 favorite kpop ALBUMS of 2024

  • 2024 has certainly been an eventful year for kpop. While it brought some disappointing moments that exposed the harsh realities of the industry and the darker side of fan behavior on social media, it also marked the painful farewells to some incredible groups (like Weki Meki, Cherry Bullet, and Nature).

Despite these challenges, when it comes to the music, I have to admit that this has been one of the strongest years since I became a K-pop fan - arguably the strongest since 2020.

Throughout the year, I made it a point to immerse myself in as many kpop releases as possible, with the goal of curating songs for my personal playlists and, of course, narrowing down my favorite tracks and albums as the year came to a close. Now that we’ve reached the final day of 2024, it’s time to share my top picks with you. :joy: :)

Let’s start with my top 15 favorite albums (both full and mini) of the year.

    15. EVNNE - Un: SEEN (Mini album)

5th gen boy groups are proving to be considerably stronger than their 4th gen counterparts, and EVNNE has been a standout group to follow since their debut. Imagine a blend of NCT's dynamic energy with VIXX's (their fellow Jellyfish sunbaenims) sophisticated flair: quite an intriguing mix. This releases merges what kpop fans often describe as "noise"(bass-heavy, experimental beats) with tasteful, memorable, and charismatic vocal moments. Their sound leans more toward the NCT and P1Harmony spectrum of "noisy kpop," than that of Stray Kids or ATEEZ.

EVNNE's recent comeback album (RIDE or DIE) marks a slight shift in their musical direction, embracing a more accessible, easy-listening sound, reminiscent of the path P1Harmony has taken. However, they have managed to retain their signature quality and cohesiveness. I’m excited to see what 2025 holds for them. Big thumbs up to the group, and especially to Seungeon, whose vocal tone I’m particularly fond of.

    Best track: Festa

    14. ZEROBASEONE - CINEMA PARADISE (Mini album)

After a somewhat underwhelming debut year (with the exception of the vibrant and addictive "In Bloom"), ZB1 has surprisingly delivered a very strong year in terms of music. When I first listened to this album, I never would have imagined it would become one of my favorites of the year. Many of the tracks lingered in my mind, growing on me with each listen. The best word to describe this mini-album would be refreshing, and it's a word I would also use to characterize ZB1 as a whole. There's a timeless quality to their music; it never feels stale, and is highly replayable, always drawing you back for more.

A personal highlight for me is the track "Road Movie." It’s intriguing from the start, with an unconventional structure, a tasteful arrangement, and sudden beat changes (very reminiscent of NMIXX!). The chorus is heavenly, with stunning vocals from Zhang Hao and Taerae, paired with compelling rap lines from Matthew.

Had "The Sea" not been included (though I do find it a charming cover), the sequence of "Good So Bad," "Kill the Romeo," "Insomnia," and "Road Movie" would easily be one of the strongest runs in any kpop album this year. Unfortunately, "The Sea" and the inclusion of the Korean version of "Yura Yura" slightly drag the album down for me.

While it’s still too early to say whether ZB1 will ultimately be regarded as one of the top groups of the 5th generation, their 2024 release puts them in an excellent position to secure a place among the best.

    Best track: Road Movie

    13. RIIZE - RIIZING (Mini album)

I'll approach this a bit differently by starting with and highlighting the negatives: one major issue I have with this release is the lack of cohesiveness between the tracks. While this album is a compilation of previously released songs with a few new additions, this has been a recurring challenge for me when it comes to RIIZE: I'm still confused and unsure of their musical direction. I enjoy their individual tracks, but I personally wouldn't group them together into one cohesive album. Additionally, the whole Seunghan fiasco was a disappointing turn of events, which has affected my excitement for their future. While I’m not as optimistic about their trajectory as I was a year ago, I still wish the boys the best in their careers.

On a positive note, the "Boom Boom Bass", "Impossible", and "Honestly" trilogy is truly irresistible and fits them exceptionally well. There's not a single track on this album that I dislike. Overall, it's a solid release and serves as a good introduction to the group.

    Best track: Impossible

    12. IVE - IVE SWITCH (Mini album)

IVE is quickly becoming a recurring name on lists of best annual releases. They never fail to deliver, consistently providing high-quality music that cements their position for me as one of the top active girl groups. Every track on "IVE SWITCH" is a resounding YES, starting with the powerful and dynamic "Heya", followed by the intriguing "Accendio", the irresistibly catchy "Blue Heart", the ethereal "Ice Queen", the charming "WOW", and the Afrobeat-inspired "RESET". This album ignites a desire to get up and dance. As always, Liz's vocals are a standout, and I must also highlight the noticeable vocal growth of Leeseo and Wonyoung.

    Best track: Accendio

    11. NCT DREAM - DREAM( )SCAPE (Mini album)

"NCT DREAM( )SCAPE" is undoubtedly the most experimental and intriguing album from NCT Dream to date. Listening to this release, it's hard to believe this is the same group behind hits like "Chewing Gum" and "Hot Sauce" (both absolute bangers, by the way). As a self-proclaimed NCT connoisseur, I must say that "DREAM( )SCAPE" reveals a very different, darker, and grittier side of the group. This moodier vibe had only been hinted at in earlier tracks like "Quiet Down" and "119", and is fully realized in the subsequent tracks "Best of Me" and "No Escape".

The mini-album hooks you from the very first intro track, "icantfeelanything", which seamlessly (or... smoothly) transitions into the groove of "Smoothie". It is then followed by the gritty "BOX", penned by LDN Noise, the alluring "Carat Cake", the dreamy and inspirational "UNKNOWN", and finally ending with a sentimental and uplifting R&B ballad "Breathing".

In my opinion, this year has been NCT Dream's strongest musical year since their debut. The range they've showcased is both impressive and exciting to witness, as it marks a clear evolution and growth in their sound.

NCT Dream’s vocal delivery is, as always, nothing short of amazing. I remain a proud fan, and keep admiring their growth and artistry.

    Best track: icantfeelanything

    10. NMIXX - Fe3O4: BREAK (Mini album)

And speaking of strong musical years, I knew 2024 was off to a promising start the moment NMIXX dropped this mini album at the beginning of the year. As someone with a particular fondness for experimental, boundary-pushing kpop, I find NMIXX's "Mixxpop" sound utterly captivating. With their exceptional vocal talent (both live and in the studio) and their impressive dance performances, NMIXX has truly established themselves as one of the finest acts of their generation, consistently delivering quality releases.

So far, "Fe3O4: BREAK" stands as my favorite album of theirs. A project that includes gems like "BOOM," "Run for Roses," "DASH," and "Soñar" is simply unmissable. Interestingly, my two favorite NMIXX tracks of the year aren't even featured on this album! I'll save those for my upcoming best songs of the year list, which I'll share tomorrow.

    Best track: Soñar (Breaker)

    9. SUHO - 1 to 3 (Mini album)

My sweet underrated king Suho. One of the biggest kpop treasures for me.

Suho's solo music stands apart from both EXO's signature sound and the solo work of his fellow members. His style leans more towards soft rock, with hints of Britpop and indie rock (genres that happen to be among my personal favorites). His 3rd mini album introduces a slightly groovier, synth-driven, and more retro vibe compared to his earlier releases. If you were a fan of "Hurdle" from his 2nd mini album, there's a good chance you'll find yourself equally into "1 to 3." This album feels like it would be the perfect soundtrack for an intimate live performance, whether in a downtown London live music club, or a tent at a summer festival in Europe.

Each track is impeccably produced, with a crystal-clear mix that highlights the quality of the work. As always, Suho's vocal delivery and technique are nothing short of masterful. Honestly, is there anything this man can't do?

    Best track: 1 to 3

  • 8. NCT 127 - WALK (Full album)

I don’t think there’s ever been a year where a NCT 127 album hasn’t been among the best releases of the year. And you know what, they've outdone themselves this time, delivering what is, for me, their finest full album to date. An album that opens with "Intro: Wall to Wall" is instantly destined to be a classic. Much like NCT Dream’s seamless transition from "icantfeelanything" to "Smoothie", the shift from "Wall to Wall "into "Walk" is flawless, and this pairing of tracks is just perfect.

One of the most persistent misconceptions about kpop is the myth that NCT 127’s music is “trash.” I encourage anyone with this opinion to listen to a full album of theirs and form their own judgment. In fact, I’d recommend you start with this specific album if you’ve ever had a negative impression of NCT 127’s music: it will very likely change your perspective a bit.

This is a remarkably high-quality album, infused with an R&B-driven urban vibe and subtle hints of soul. Over the years, NCT 127 has evolved from their EDM-heavy, house-inspired sound of their early years to a more R&B-oriented style. This album marks a shift towards a slightly more subdued tone, but don’t worry: if you’re craving their signature “neo” experimental side, tracks like "Gas" and "Rain Drop" deliver that in spades. These tracks are absolutely delicious.

I’d like to give a special shout out to Johnny and Yuta, whose performances truly stood out to me in ways they never have before. Their contributions feel more dynamic and unique than ever. I have no doubt 127 will continue to deliver without Jaehyun & Taeyong (who are currently in their military era) in 2025.

Just when I thought NCT 127 couldn’t possibly surpass their previous work, they’ve gone ahead and done exactly that. It’s a true pleasure to stan a group that consistently delivers exceptional music and continuously surprises you in the best way possible. Love you forever my ilichil.

    Best track: Walk

Would it be a hot take to say that ENHYPEN is the best thing to ever come out of HYBE?

I find myself constantly impressed by this group’s discography. While I initially thought that 2023 might have been their weakest year musically - following the exceptional releases of 2021 and 2022 - 2024 has proven to be a triumphant return to form. "ROMANCE : UNTOLD" was in heavy rotation for me throughout the year, with standout tracks like the funky "Brought the Heat Back" (DNCE's Cake by the Ocean anyone?), the emotionally resonant fan song "Highway 1009" featuring a beautiful melody, and the synth-wave, 2020 retro trend throwback "Hundred Broken Hearts", which quickly became some of my favorites on the album.

While vocal strength may not be one of ENHYPEN’s standout features, it never feels like a glaring issue, since their sound is primarily driven by EDM, house, pop, and dance influences. In fact, their vocal performances are more than adequate for the style they embrace.

Yet, ENHYPEN’s strength as a group is so undeniable that, much like with NMIXX, my favorite song of theirs from this year isn’t even included on their best album of the year! More on that tomorrow!

Best track: Brought the Heat Back

After a rough start to the year with "EASY", which I consider their weakest release to date, preceded by "Perfect Night", a track I wasn’t particularly fond of, unlike many other kpop fans, and the underwhelming "UNFORGIVEN", my hopes for LSFM’s musical direction, which had been sky-high after their stellar debut year in 2022, were beginning to dwindle. That is, until "CRAZY" dropped. Suddenly, my optimism was reignited: both "CRAZY" and its twin intro track "Chasing Lightning" are easily among the best things released this year. In a year dominated by the rise of house, EDM, and brat-style music, "CRAZY" fits the trend and aligns perfectly with my tastes. These two tracks are irresistibly addictive and have quickly become some of my most played songs of the year.

"Pierrot" is another standout, featuring a somewhat unconventional arrangement based on a sample from a Kim Wan Sun song. While the final 2 tracks of the mini album aren’t quite as strong as the first 3, they still provide a respectable conclusion to the project.

    Best track: Chasing Lightning

    5. Red Velvet - Cosmic (Mini album)

As Red Velvet celebrates their 10th anniversary this year, they’ve gifted us with a truly exceptional album in the form of Cosmic. It’s an enchanting release that radiates Sailor Moon-esque, magical, sparkly girl vibes (reminiscent of WJSN or even OH MY GIRL), with a recurring undertone of melancholy and longing delivered through the chord progressions, lyrical themes, mystical melodies and beautiful vocal harmonies. "Love Arcade" feels like a nostalgic throwback to "Summer Magic", evoking the playful, video game-y sounds from that album, while "Sunflower" delivers the familiar Moonshine and Cazzi Opeia-penned signature sound we’ve come to love in Red Velvet’s albums. The album reaches its perfect conclusion with "Night Drive", a dreamy, synth-driven ballad that brings the release to an effortlessly nostalgic close.

Red Velvet undoubtedly has one of the best discographies in kpop, and "Cosmic" is yet another stunning chapter in their musical journey. This album continues the legacy of excellence they’ve built over the years, further solidifying their place at the top. Each release feels like a carefully crafted work of art, and "Cosmic" is no exception: it's a testament to the group's artistry and ability to constantly evolve while staying true to their unique sound.

    Best track: Cosmic

I consider Yves the breakout star of the year. In her young solo career, she has already managed to fully define and establish her sound, evolving seamlessly from "LOOP" earlier in the year to "I Did" now. With MILLIC and IOAH serving as the main producers, the album navigates a range of styles, from EDM and electronic house to groovy R&B, and even ventures into a more introspective & experimental territory with DIM. Yves delivers soulful vocals with genuine character, perfectly suited to the charismatic tracks and the cutting-edge production that define the album.

My only complaint? It’s far too short!

    Best track: DIM

    3. xikers - HOUSE OF TRICKY: Trial And Error (Mini album)

NOISE ALERT! ATEEZ's little brothers continue to leave me shook. I was already a fan of their unapologetically loud, gritty, and raw sound established in their debut releases in 2023, but the "Trial and Error" installment of the "House of Tricky" series takes everything to a whole new level. And honestly, with a track like "Supercalifragilistic" on the album, that’s exactly what I expected.

For those who haven’t heard xikers before, think ATEEZ with an extra edge, more hip-hop-driven beats, a dash of iKON’s swagger, and a final touch of NMIXX’s experimental beat changes. This sound is certainly not for everyone - it's indeed loud, abrasive, and intense - but it’s right up my alley. The rappers’ delivery is compelling, and the tracks themselves are sonically exciting, with powerful bass lines and heaps of personality.

If Suho’s "1 to 3" would be the perfect early evening set at a live summer festival in Europe, "Trial and Error" would absolutely be the rave section after midnight, closing the night with electrifying energy: strobing lights, pounding beats and a few drinks.

    Best track: Supercalifragilistic

This was a close call, and honestly, #2 and #1 are almost interchangeable for me. But after much thought, the runner-up is my ult bias Jaehyun with his debut solo album J. When I say my expectations were high, it’s an understatement: I knew this was going to be the album, and it absolutely delivered.

Jaehyun’s baritone is smooth, honey-like, and swoon-worthy; it’s instantly recognizable and, in my opinion, highly underrated. The album leans heavily into R&B, which suits him perfectly. You can tell he poured his heart and soul into this project, and with a face like that and a voice like his, well... it's impossible to resist. Every track on the album is high quality, with exquisite instrumentation and impeccable arrangements, but "Can't Get You", produced by the legendary Babyface, is the clear standout for me: it’s pure magic.

Though Jaehyun has temporarily left us to fulfill his military service, he’s left behind this beautiful gift. I’m already anticipating Jaehyun Solo 2.0 when he returns.

    Best track: Can't Get You

    1. IRENE - Like a Flower (Mini album)

With a mini album nearly the size of a full-length release (8 tracks!), Irene has made her highly anticipated solo debut: and she’s done so in spectacular fashion. This album is everything I hoped for and more. Not only are the tracks impeccably produced and crafted, with some truly beautiful lyrics (like the inspiring message in "Start Line"), but Irene’s vocals have never sounded better.

From the afrobeat-inspired title track "Like a Flower" to the melancholic R&B vibes of "Summer Rain" and "Calling Me Back", the album effortlessly shifts between styles. We’re treated to the icy elegance of "Strawberry Silhouette", then the hopeful, uplifting tones of "Start Line", and a sweet, seasonal touch with the Christmas track "Winter Wish".

The album also features bonus tracks, including the quirky and fun Ka-Ching, which Irene previously performed at last year’s fan meeting, and the adorable I Feel Pretty. All in all, this debut exceeds expectations and showcases Irene’s versatility as an artist.

    Best track: Strawberry Silhouette

That's it for albums! Tomorrow I'll be going through my favorite song of 2024. Stay tuned :joy: :)
