Does stray kids is third most popular group in kpop after bts and blackpink?

  • In recent times stray kids popularity and their fandom surged tremendously. Their streaming numbers also so high and now their recent tour going to be one of the biggest in kpop and also their are the only group in 4th gen who is showing upward trajectory along with asepa.

New jeans also in this position once but there is uncertainty in their future. And twice is set in a different position their fandom is big but popularity wise they are not used to be what they are.

  • They're an interesting case because they're not popular in areas where kpop is usually popular (Korea, SEA) but they're doing really well in other places.

  • Comparing male and female groups by popularity is at least strange, the popularity of male groups =/= the popularity of female groups, simply because male groups will always be more popular in terms of fandom, since almost the entire fandom there is made up of girls, while female groups often have male fans. Let me take myself as an example, I listen to Nmixx more often than StrayKids, and I listen to them 2-3 albums once a week, occasionally watching some shows. I have a friend who constantly watches and listens to Straykids, nevertheless +1 nmixx fan vs +1 StrayKids fan. The difference in gender fandom is very important.

  • No but they have big fandom. They aren't popular with muggles. I literally don't know any of their songs, never heard their songs in public and socmed (my feed doesn't show me kpop things, so only the popular ones used by muggles showed).

Newjeans are way more popular. You don't need to be a kpop stan to know their songs. Their songs are often played in our national tv, but never straykids

  • I think popularity and fandom are two different things. Being popular means a lot of people, including non-fans (gp), know who you are. Having a big fandom, though, means you have a ton of dedicated fans. For example, Sabrina Carpenter or Olivia Rodrigo is always more popular than Bts or Bp members, but when it comes to fandoms size, they don’t have as huge as Kpop groups do.

So, outside of Kpop boundaries, I believe people still recognize Twice, dare I say even BB and Snsd more than them. But I do agree they have the third biggest fandom currently in kpop.

  • Yes, they are.

Also, I disagree with the narrative about treating fandom as a separated category to popularity here, especially when the artist is on an upward trajectory and even said fandom is still growing massively. One day, fans were general public too. No one was born their fan. They are reaching a new audience consistently, the difference to them for some others is that the audience stays.

Their public being big in several markets where K-pop doesn't that much of a big support in comparison to their backbones just adds to this fact.

The whole "they're not popular they just have a fandom!!" narrative is a cope. Obviously every fan started out not knowing them, then becoming aware of them because.... ding ding! They're popular! Their streams and monthly listeners don't grow just because it's the same fans magically making it. It's because the groups popularity is obviously growing, and along with it many are converted to proper fans too.

Where are you'll living where people can recognise any kpop idol? People can't even tell who BTS is here and I live in Asia.

The only kpop kids I knew have moved onto Taylor swift because kpop is uncool now.

  • I think yes bc not only their touring numbers is becoming massive, their streams improved 10000%. I think this all happened after God's menu and since then they are becoming unstoppable.

It's an impressive growth when for big3 groups if in the first two years of debut you don't get a "hit" you are completely erased from top groups convo, but SKZ became an exception and trusted themselves to keep producing their songs and here we are.

I didn't say anything about people recognizing any kpop idol?

i live in sea, no one ouside kpop stan know any kpop idol even bts, but they know of bts. Every boygroup is bts to them. not other bg, not straykids because they only ever heard of bts. Blackpink for gg and twice and newjeans to some extent (they even KNOW of lisa here tho I'm not sure they recognize her face).

What I'm trying to say is, SKZ is not #3. NJ is way more popular. Here where i live, even twice is more popular

  • Where do u live bc this is certainly not the case in Europe. No one from outside the kpop bubble knows who TWICE is.

OP didn’t mention a specific region, so I’m talking about where Kpop is more popular which is Asia. None of these groups are popular in Europe anyway outside the Kpop fan bubble to worth a mention.

SEA is Stray Kids' weakest market, so yeah.. this is expected.

But this is not the case every other place in the world.

It’s just a coping mechanism I wouldn’t take those people seriously. Internationally ALL Kpop fans are niche. No GP is listening to Kpop other than some maybe viral songs

Exactly. We are all the same K-pop community knowing/listening to the same artists. And even If I don't listen to, let's say, IVE, I know they exist and that they are popular.

Also, fandoms have always been the backbone of K-pop groups, especially globally. I fail to understand how I can be a more valuable listener to aespa because I listen to their song 100 times on Spotify than a fan of theirs who stream consistently, buy tickets and merch. I don't know why "casuals" should be put in such a high pedestal.

Kpop is actually not that popular in Korea. Surprising I know but among general public kpop isn't that popular except for some groups which are mostly girl groups. Koreans aren't as invested as us international fans.

    Where do you live tho?

I live in Bangladesh and newjeans isn't popular as a group but some of their songs are well known among the kpop community. Meanwhile for SKZ ppl are mostly into the members but yeah all inside the kpop bubble. Nobody in my country cares about kpop other than kpop fans and some jealous single dudes who can't find a girlfriend cz the girl they like likes kpop.

I think day6 would be a good example than Skz. They got popularity way later than Skz 😭 but I got your point

Are you aware of the fact that kpop isn't mainstream anywhere around the world cz it's simply kpop not English pop so yeah nobody listens to kpop other than kpop fans themselves. Only few kpop songs that got popular among the general public and 95% of the streams are coming from fans themselves. Among kpop fans Skz is indeed popular bjt if you're gonna talk about general public then nobody's popular maybe just V, jungkook, Jennie and Lisa.

  • Hell no.

Having the most devoted fandom has never and will never be equivalent to being the most popular group overall

The people willing to add your songs to their playlist and recognize your biggest hits are not the same people willing to shell out hundreds of dollars to see you in tour

  • Hell no.

that seems a bit condescending; so the so called "hardcore fans" are less important than "casuals"?

  • that seems a bit condescending; so the so called "hardcore fans" are less important than "casuals"?

How did you extract that from my message?

I didn't speak to one demographic being less or more important than the other. Instead, I'm highlighting the fact that overall popularity is comprised of more than just big fandoms.

K-Pop itself is the perfect microcosm of this.

I'll use Sistar as an example. They have never had a fandom remotely comparable to any boy groups from their era, and could never hold a big concert, but they're clearly one of the most popular girl groups ever. Why? Their songs were massive hits and they ruled the summer.

Even just historically speaking, boy groups have always ruled fan-driven metrics like album sales and tours, with a few notable exceptions (and those girl groups are all legends or on their way to being legends)

The MOST popular groups, of course, have both.

Koreans, to be blunt, don't give a damn about Stray Kids' songs or their members. I've never seen them pop up on any Gallup Survey or year end charts.

Their fandom is impressive, but my praise ends there.

  • Anyone who says Twice and Newjeans are more popular than StrayKids are delusional

Stray Kids is 3rd most popular kpop group in the world, and their touring power shows it already! They are also 2nd most streamed kpop group this year only after BTS!

They are also 3rd most popular group in US!

  • Stray Kids schedule themselves to play a bunch of stadiums and their fans go bonkers before anything even happens. I'm going to laugh if they're all half empty. Show us results, then you can talk. Until then you only make yourselves look delusional.

    Do your homework

BTS, BLACKPINK, NewJeans and Twice are obviously the most popular K-Pop groups in the world today.

Koreans would laugh in your face if you tried to argue Stray Kids was more popular than any of these groups.

They're not only scheduled to perform in them, they have sold out 15 stadiums in a week and added additional shows due to "phenomonal demand".

Stray Kids is second most streamed kpop group on Spotify this year only behind BTS

They are 3d most streamed kpop artist on yt music in last 12 months only behind BP and BTS

They sold 1m copies in US alone this year

They have most streamed boy group song this year

    They have 2 bbh100

    N1 BB200 with 200k+ sales

Biggest kpop group spotify global debut with 3.1m streams

And of course their gigantic stadium tour with already 15 stadiums sold out

    So where is the lie?

    "a bunch" being 26 stadium dates 🤣

skz could perform on the moon and there would still be people like 🤓 ok but did they debut on melon this year??🤓
