BTS is great like The Beatles.

    BTS is great like BIGBANG.

    BTS is great like NCT.

J-Hope's rapping reminds me of GD's rapping.

    BABYMONSTER is great like BLACKPINK.

    NewJeans reminds me of MAMAMOO.

This aespa song reminds me of Red Velvet. It's just so good.

All of this could be said with the harmless intention of praise, especially if you're a multifan who loves a ton of groups.

But when it comes to K-pop politics, some may take issue with it. You might not know this until you dive deeper until K-pop spaces such as AKP, Reddit, and X.

I'm perfectly aware of the reasons why fans may be upset:

    • It "sets up" their favorites to be slandered, especially by fans of the other mentioned group
    • It sets a fire in the hearts of antis who constantly look for every similarity to point out as "plagiarism"
    • The fans want their favorites to be 100% original with no bit of inspiration from other artists ever because they believe their favorites are musical gods and goddesses who have the ability to create music out of thin air

In a perfect environment where people are levelheaded and balanced with their takes, we could freely liken one musical act with another in the spirit of praise without it potentially becoming a fanwar battleground, but in the current state, it's a bit difficult.

Let's have an honest, open dialogue about this. Does it bother you and why?

  • I absolutely don't have any problem with someone telling me "Sunmi is great like Avril Lavigne".

  • superyeah

Changed the title of the thread from “Do you care when people compare your favorites to others with the intention of praise?” to “Do you get upset when people compare your favorites to others with the intention of praise?”.
  • no problems with me

comparison is a good tool to gauge success or the competition

it's only how people choose to use such comparisons could it become problematic

  • I don't like comparing groups in general and try not to do it at all, if I can help it.

But the example you gave is probably the least "problematic" way of comparing, as it's positive. If someone said that about my favourite groups, I wouldn't have a problem with it, but I know some people might take it as an offence and argue that one group isn't as good as the other.

SNSD TWICE IVE Taeyeon aespa f(x) Red Velvet

  • I thinj intention matters. Like if someone was like “Psycho by Red Velvet feels like it was pulled from F(x)s scrapped catalogue” id agree and take it as a compliment because after their disbandment someone had to take on the harsh role of performing those insane songs well and Red Velvet and Aespa both do so well. (I believe theirs Pre-fx sm and post-fx sm, we go from soft pop and ballads to electronic power songs)

However if someone said “aespa is doing what Fx couldnt” then id be mad

  • If it's for praise then I have no problem with it.

But in the case(s) where the comparison is used to assert that x is > y then I will fight until my fingers fall off from so much typing.

Asides from that, there should be no comparison at all because ultimately every group is different. Plus we've reached a point in the k-pop industry (or rather music industry in general) where that point of comparison is used in a way meant to demean other groups and throw shade simply because of the subjective opinion that x is better than y.

  • It depends bc most of the times it's a set up to drag one of the groups so while your dream is beautiful, this is still kpop where 70% of things being said are with bad intentions :meme-life-support:

But I do it myself without ill intention with Baemon/Meovv and BP and in 2022 I even compared Aespa with BP, but it wasn't musically, concept wise, it was more about the hate both groups got etc.

  • As long as it's genuine praising, I don't mind. So, no, I do not get upset.

People will always compare, regardless if it's for negative or positive reasons.
