No kpop group ever had a year as exceptionnal than Aespa

  • I'm not talking about numbers, somes groups had very impressive year in term of numbers

But i'm talking in term of artist, 2024 for Aespa have been one of the most entertaining and interesting year for a kpop group i've ever seen

They have truly build their own image this year while still being able to show a wide range of concept and sound, and still being creative enough for each of their concept feel like something never seen in kpop

We truly went from the weird superpower alien concept

With the Hyper pop sound of Supernova

To the cunty ready for catwalk bop that whiplash is

With its very simple aesthetic but still very innovative

  • This is a stupid thread.

2023 NewJeans was EASILY more impressive than any single year by any other girl group ever

Making this thread and then declaring objective measurements, like numbers, don't matter, is a really easy way to invalidate anything else you were going to say

This isn't even a top 3 year all time.

  • I never followed aespa much but I've always appreciated their wide range of concepts and sound, even if they aren't always my taste. It just feels like they had a massive glow up this year. They just really feel like proof of how important strong concepts and good marketing is, they are a cool group.

  • "no kpop group ever" is a bold statement, although ı agree with you partially. what is insane for me about aespa is that they did all things and were successfully musically diverse. what snsd was staying in thier comfort zone mostly and depended mostly on their huge fans.

  • what snsd was staying in thier comfort zone mostly and depended mostly on their huge fans.

I'm not gonna say snsd were staying in their comfort zone

Cuz from gee to genie there was a 180 degree virage

But musically they were staying in the true pop sound they didn't try a variety of music genre

And i do understand cuz some sound were very niche in 2nd year

But no kpop group had the guts to try and do it successfully

To go from hyper pop to girlceush hip hop, to edm catwalk song while doing a little stop at the alternative rock with regret of time

This year aespa show a diversity musically and concept wise

Cuz they went from such different aesthetic from each other but still felt like aespa

While most group have a certain aesthetic usually and they recycle this aesthetic for their different mv while changing some little thing here and there

But never a group show such a big range of things in such a short amount of time

While trying to innovate in their album conception

I'm not saying aespa had a crazy year just musically and concept wise

    Even marketing wise

Which other group had the guts to release a CD player as an album ?

Who created a whipmixer just for a concept ?

  • actually you already pointed out my preference with" in the true pop sound ."

what puts aespa ahead of snsd is not having a strong fandom but the fact that it's appreciated their music mostly by the general public. And imagine doing that while staying true to your identity and taking bold risks. That's what's impressive about aespa. Redvelvet did the same thing to some extent, but I don't think they were as successful as aespa.

  • that can be debatable

    It literally cannot.

No girl group will probably ever have a year as dominant as 2023 NewJeans

There isn't a single thing they didn't accomplish or a record they didn't break.

It's absolutely wild what they did.

I don't even think THEY can ever touch it again.

  • While I appreciate aespa's incredible run in 2024, I don't think they can touch Newjeans 2023 in any merit. "No kpop group ever" is a very bold statement.

While 2023 have been a big year for newjeans in term of number and success

Music wise or concept wise i wouldn't compare to 2024 aespa

Cuz musically newjeans have stayed in the same comfort zone since their debut

Mv wise they are part of the group that even if their mv have different story, aesthetic wise they are very similar to each other

2023 newjeans doesn't feel as exceptionnal than 2024 feel for aespa

  • I'll go to war for snsd

But creative wise, concept wise, originality, marketing wise they never had a year as impressive than aespa did this year or felt as impactful

Come on now, SNSD did all the concepts that Aespa did. They are literally the blueprint for RV and Aespa.

SNSD's biggest hit is probably GEE and the longest charting #1 song as well with 8 weeks, Supernova had 15 weeks, and SNSD did that in a really competitive 2nd gen against boy groups when streaming weren't even a thing.

If you want to compare Aespa with new gen groups, sure, no one did it, but Aespa didn't really have a competition this year, except IU, and now Rose and Bruno oppa, and soon Taeyeon, again. They're the only Kpop artist Aespa couldn't beat.

    Image

  • I don't really understand why you're talking about streaming, or competition or weeks charting

When i've been very clear that i was talking about the marketing around the group, the concept, their diversity in music, how they try to innovate with their album design etc....

  • fifty fifty broke into locals - thats what i call an achievement

Not as much as NewJeans. NewJeans literally outsold Barbie and Super Shy is the most critically acclaimed girl group song ever. I don't think 70,000+ people would've been singing along to Super Shy like the crowd at Lollapalooza last year either. The line for the NewJeans Spotify pop up was longer than the merch line at Lollapalooza. Several times over.

People really don't get how big 2023 was for them.

  • Day6 has one of the biggest glow-ups ever in KPOP history.

From not charting much to at one point having 4/5 songs in the Top 5 charts all belonging to Day6. Having multiple songs like 5 songs in the Top 20 even right now despite the onslaught of aespa+GD+Rose+Jennie and despite that Day6 still has 5 songs charting in the top 20 more than any group.

Selling out concerts after concerts one bigger than the other and now World Tour which BTW I'm seeing them next week.

Yes this is an excuse to promote Day6. So please stream Happy

  • i think u despise day6, ur always setting them up for failure ;judgingpepe:

Act like an angel flop like Flop6

    :pepe-angel:

No but seriously which other BG has actually gotten BIGGER as a group than they were AFTER they finished military.

Military used to be the deadend for most BGs. I would love for some other groups to be as relevant as Day6 after military but I actually can't think of any.

I do think Day6 is not big enough despite being the No.1 BG this year

Which is why you guys should help stream

Like I said, SNSD did pretty much every concept that Aespa and RV did. SNSD's discography is also diverse, they did songs in almost every genre: Pop, EDM, Jazz, Folk, even Rock.

Aespa's album designs are boring as hell, you only mentioned this because of that cool CD player version, but that's all.

  • It's so funny that people who don't know SNSD think they never left their comfort zone, when they released songs in multiple genres that most Kpop groups (especially girl groups) never even dare to do.

snsd never pushed the boundaries like redvelvet, aespa and snsd's diversity is nothing compared to what redvelvet and aespa did. they have never known for their diversity.

  • Redvelvet did the same thing to some extent, but I don't think they were as successful as aespa.

Actually before making this thread i had to think for 10 minutes thinking maybe i shouldn't make such a bold title cuz 2017 red velvet with rookie - perfect velvet - red summer

Show a big diversity of concept

And then i thought and many points made me not do it

    - first the whole concept of red velvet i love the contrast of red and velvet but the problem with it is that they could go from one extreme to another one but without being able to create a true identity for themselves

Even if There's some things who often comeback in their aesthetic like them around the table etc....

    - SM being lazy with Red velvet they had the potential but sm never invest enough in them in trying to be creative with their album at the time they only started to do it around feel my rythm and birthday era

  • Aespa's album designs are boring as hell, you only mentioned this because of that cool CD player version, but that's

I'm open to have a good discussion but if you really want to discuss stop being delusional and lying

The savage album concept with the whole PC card who turn as AE or aespa members

With the cover of the album to scan to open the POS portal

Then with the whole girls album concept with the whole video games character concept

Spicy with the 90's magazine cover aesthetic and the zine version who is design to look like a real magazine

Then they had the CD player etc....

Aespa have been innovating in their 4 years with their album more than sm did for snsd in 10 years

  • This thread premise is pretty worthless if you leave out the numbers.

Just say you love the direction of aespa's concepts and music this year and you'll have no controversy.

Framing all that under the audacious and hyperbolic claim that they had the best year ever is practically BEGGING for smoke. At the very least, it will summon me, because you know I'll have something to say about that.

  • I would called "unmatched" a big exageration.

You got many other groups with "good years".

Girls' Generation 2010, with song like Oh!, Run Devil Run and Hoot.or 2009 with Gee and Genie.

Both 2NE1 and T-ara hade some good years.

Blackpinks debut year. Twice had some good years.

    And so on.

  • In terms of concept I agree 100%

But in terms of marketing My world era had the best marketing tho it is not as successful as Armageddon-whiplash era!

In terms of Sound it isn’t ground breaking cuz we had some filler and mid bsides in Armageddon!

Tho whiplash is a near perfect EP

  • uhm who is going to tell u that they didnt do an armageddon or a peekaboo

Sure, let's ignore "Run Devil Run". SNSD's darkest concept. At THAT TIME, it was the darkest concept by a BIG3 girl group.

Also, Armageddon is not really a concept you could do in the 2nd gen. for obv reasons, BUT Taeyeon as a soloist already did a concept similar to that!

  • Aespa seriously took 2024 to new heights :!: the Next Level if you will :p I actually think 2023 was an amazing year too :!:

We got Spicy - Drama - Jingle bells rock - Supernova - Armageddon - Hot mess - Whiplash :p Considering aespa only released Girls tt in 2022 they’ve been hitting home runs :melon_think:

My deception with 2023 aespa was thah it was on a good run

I love the whole concept of Spicy with the 90's magazine album, the MV who look like a 90's-2000's teenage movie

But this good run was stop with Drama marketing

I love the concept of giving to each girl a type of movie teaser

But the idea wasn't complete to me

You think drama, directly you think of movies etc...why not shape the album like a Video tapes or something like this

But we got a generic album and that's it

What 2024 aespa have that i felt their team didn't have the previous years is a true synergy

Now you look at the Mv, the concept, the album design and everything connect to each other

Which is something that i felt they didn't have the previous years

I could see that there was a lot of thoughts who went into the concept or the promo but there was always a moment where it felt like it wasn't completely finish

  • snsd never pushed the boundaries like redvelvet, aespa and snsd's diversity is nothing compared to what redvelvet and aespa did. they have never known for their diversity.

You mean, YOU never knew them for that. Big difference! Most Kpop fans only listen to Title Tracks, so don't talk if you didn't listen to EVERY SNSD song.

The whole reason they're still the biggest and most important girl group in Kpop because they pushed the boundaries with representing the underrepresented communities. And do all that when girl groups and women in general were "slaves" in SK or just a pretty face.

RV and Aespa born in a much better era where they can do more.

  • Why is it so hard to learn to read

I don't deny that other groups had exceptionnal years in term of hit and success

But it's absolutely not what i'm talking about here

  • I think Young Posse got the most creative concept this year
