Honestly, they’re not as popular as other 4th generation male idols in Korea…

Since their album has sold 5 million copies, they must have exploded overseas

    1. I hate that school violence group

    2. They got #1 on Billboard 200, they got the best response overseas

    3. Doesn’t the fact that they hold fan meetings and concerts in KSPO Dome prove they are so popular in Korea?

    4. Seriously, I don’t know…?

    5. Because school violence and the songs are too loud for muggles to listen to their songs

    6. They just shouted a lot on stage

    7. Where did they become popular in other countries?

    8. Are you asking because you really don’t know? It’s a school violence group

    9. Because foreigners don’t care about their school violence controversy

    10. They are only popular in China

Stray Kids are popular in other countries, but why aren’t they popular in Korea? – Pannkpop

  • Kpop is an interesting phenomenon in that a group can sell 5m and they’re not a household name…in any country. :pepe-narrow-eyes:

Most popular artists have a stronghold in at least some countries, usually domestic or one of the biggest markets in the world. Kpop does so well existing as a niche globally in 99% of countries.

    This is true,it's kinda perplexing

For BTS & BP they had that one or two country where they reigned supreme or went toe to toe with local artists even more so for BTS

But skz & 17 don't really have that not even in China do they match BP or BB stats

Both are popular to an extent in Japan but almost every big 4 act is big in Japan

  • JYP already discovered a couple of years ago with Twice, that Korea doesn't matter anymore for groups in the top companies. Late last year Twice's release peaked at #98 on Melon, yet they sold the most concert tickets last year out of all the music groups in the world, not just kpop groups.

  • 1st, their reputation in KOREA is in shambles. with hyunjin's bullying case, and bang chan's IVE thing, nobody likes them. 2nd, nobody likes boy group noise music, and that's no shade to them, but they make noise music, nobody wants to wake up at 6am and put on S-class, people PUT on I AM to feel motivated, or some NEW jeans song, nobody wants to listen to boy group nonsense, and 3rd, they just crazy. they just not what you want to see when you turn on the TV, when your wondering what kpop group is preforming, they just a mess, I don't want to see that, and surely korean people don't either. they are LUCKY that the west cherishes them, and they should be happy that a lot of people put up with their lack luster, scary, disjointed music. they should. bless stray kids though. bless them.

  • SVT is a household name in both Japan and China

  • But skz & 17 don't really have that not even in China do they match BP or BB stats

Skz is one of the top kpop groups in China. There are even rumors that they might hold a concert there if China allows kpop artists to perform again. And they're also popular in Japan thanks. Idk where do you guys get such information from

  • the two kinds of music that sells in korea imo are music that can be played in malls and cafes, which seem to be some cultural attraction there

and music that teens bop to, since they are the biggest audience

only way to transcend this is to get a lot of validation from white media

  • Now I’m kinda curious about the album sales distribution. Which country buys the most? And does the streams match? 5 million is a lot so it’s kinda logical for people to be asking question.

This is also only filtered streams for 7/12 songs on the album.

    They're doing well in Spotify.

That is considered as doing "well"?

Lmaooo That is literally the last confirmed source that their album sales are not matching with their spotify streams, apple music, Youtube views and kcharts Performance.

    That’s great.

Still curious which countries they are most popular with sales and streams though

Album sales don’t match up for 99% of groups outside of BTS and BP.

As soon as you start breaking down album sales by country in stops making sense for a lot of groups :pepe-narrow-eyes:

Yeah but for groups with large album sales their songs still chart top 10 in some countries. Like Seventeen and Txt both chart top 10 Korea, BP can chart top 20 in the US. But Stray Kids isn’t top 50 in Korea, hasn’t ever entered Hot 100 in the US, never entered Spotify global top 10 like Newjeans, 50/50, so which country is buying the albums?

Seventeen sell 4m albums as well. Let’s say a million in China, a million in SK, 500k in Japan. That’s their 3 main markets with a generous 2.5m and 1.5m from others.

There’s what, still 2m+ albums being sold?

Stray Kids are no different. 1m in China, let’s be generous and say 400k in SK, 200K in Japan, 250k in US judging by billboard 200.

That’s what, 1.9m from the biggest kpop countries. So it’s 3m+ from the others.

Hell even Twice sell 1.8m. Looking at Oricon not even a 100k in Japan, maybe 250k in South Korea, maybe 200k in the US, 300k in China. Not even 900k you’d say from their biggest consumers which is only half their sales. They don’t chart with any significance in other countries.

  • That’s great.

Still curious which countries they are most popular with sales and streams though

There isn't any country specifically they are a powerhouse, let's say, where locals know their name, apart maybe on Japan, to some extent, since they just recently had a GP hit. But they are Top 3, and sometimes even 2, in popularity in most countries in the world within K-pop niche.

What I want to say is, their popularity isn't concentrate in a certain region like most groups. They have a relative amount of popularity in each part of the world. What makes hard to clarify from where their sales come the most. But I'd say: Japan, China, Europe, US and LATAM countries. For example, their sales had a big jump this comeback and I'd say the fact they started to have european distribution for the first time was a big factor (even though they debuted on the charts of all relevant european album charts only with digital + streams previously)

SEA and Korea are their weakest regions.

  • SVT was 2,1 million in China

And minimum 750k in Japan (3x Platinum there), could be as high as 3 million in only those two countries
