Were Twice anything more than a popular trend in South Korea?

  • I still think that twice is better than blackpink lol. yet i have been a stan since their debut date. Yet blackpink is way more popular, they need more m/vs. Twice has like 7 more than they do, and blackpink debuted like 5 months later. Twice was definitely more than a trend. Twice was a very popular girl group and still is. I hope their new comeback will make them rise up in popularity more. Since this album will be like Formula of Love, the english single should get popular and bring back fame for twice.

  • yes

Twice more than a popular trend in South Korea?
TWICE peak is better than BP peak
    also at that their peak
TWICE song is miles better than any BP song in existence as of now
even better than BTS song in Korea
not even BTS can touch TWICE at their peak
only SNSD or Wondergirls or IVE 2022 could match that 2-3 year TWICE peak

  • Most album sale, most daesangs, most music show wins, most streams, etc. Choose your criteria.

These aren't achieved by just being "trendy" Trendy is being successful for a short period, Twice consistency shows great results in year over year.

You don't get to Twices status by just being trendy, this is achieved by being consistent in their work and quality.

Trendy is coming out with a new music genre and only lasting while the concept is popular.
Trendy is debuting highly talked about members who gets dropped and forgotten about in a few months.
Trendy is going viral for something like a one hit wonder song and then forgotten.

Let's see how many of your faves are truly successful and not just a temporary FOMO bandwagon.

  • Trend in South Korea so album sales are irrelevant.

9 number ones and 3 SOTY’s in the space of less than three years as they just pumped out so much content whilst they were trendy. Nothing wrong with that but it is what it is. Like Katy Perry.

They could never successfully reinvent themselves to the public.

TWICE currently hold the record for 9 consecutive number 1 GAON Title Songs for a Physical Album where the minimum sales of the Album is 360k+. This is the level of Trend that TWICE established that so far is unmatched by any Korean Singer or Group.

That doesn't mean that TWICE has stopped trending as their relevance continues to sell albums at a higher level AND even set first for GGs for Concerts in America.

TWICE are a Nation's Girl Group, they don't need to reinvent themselves because when you reach that level it means you've perfected the image that South Koreans love.

Album sales have near nothing to do with South Korea relevance or bg’s would rule the roost lol

Notice how you’re talking about US tours and whatnot whilst I explicitly was talking about in South Korea because you’re struggling to argue against the initial point.

If the perfect image is only listening to a groups title tracks when they put out one particular concept and ditching them in three years when they outgrow that concept it doesn’t seem that great or substantial. Twice’s record only exists because they released so much close together whilst they were trendy. 2NE1 and Sistar got their 9 number ones over 5-7 years, Twice? Less than three.

  • Yes and No.

Yes, Twice debut with a cute and innocent concept and at the time it was very trendy concept. Koreans loved cute concept the most then. You can see how EXO and Twice very dominating because they had a cute, fun, sweet concept.

However, once South Korea has become more open to western culture, music, ideology and so on Blackpink and BTS start to rise then.

It was from here on where everyone saw a change in Kpop and more Kpop groups start shifting their music to more Hip Hop and Rap songs because more Koreans start loving this type of music.

In conclusion, Twice was riding the trendy wave back then but they are not just a trendy group. They were still able to establish themselves as successful group.

To comment on the question in the OP and this post, I guess it depends what you define as 'popular trend'?

With trend, I usually think of short term, not multiple years. All things said and done, TWICE still were the most popular girl group in South Korea for 3-4 years, that is longer lasting than what I'd consider just a 'trend'.

Just a popular trend, then I'd think of the short popularity peaks as groups as Oh My Girl, Brave Girls and such.
