Billlie: from SM, viral fancams, viral songs, yet still nugu. Why?

  • Billlie is from Mystic Story, under SM. Their song Gingamingayo go viral, fancams go viral too yet it didn’t push them out of nugudom like StayC, Oh My girl,…when they had viral songs. Not to mention the group is talented, and has interesting lore too.

  • How are they from SM when they arent even allowed on Kwangya club, lysn or bubble?


    They arent part of any of SM promotions either.


    SM is not even lifting a finger for them, which is a shame. They are really a good group and could do better with some backing.

    Mystic Story is a sublabel. Same way in that ador or source music are Hybe sublabels.


    I think however, since Billlie is very separate from other sm groups in terms of branding and image, not a lot of people know that. Like, you don’t see them included in the sm family stuff, yk?


    Hybe on the other hand, uploads basically all their groups music on one channel, allowing the groups to be more connected brand and image wise.

    Billlie fanbase is really growing. They last album sold around 80k, they are clearly not a nugu group anymore. They are a mid-tier group.

  • Most people don't know mystic is under SM as SM has a lot of subsidiaries that they do fuck all with. Lovelyz is technically an SM group by that same logic. Hybe brands the sublabels as a sort of Hybe family, so most people see LSF and NJS as Hybe groups. SM doesn't.


    I was really hyped for them predebut because of Haram but their music is honestly really terrible. Gingma thing is awful and while Ring My Bell isn't bad, it's not that great and not the right comeback to respond to Tsuki's hype.

    It most definitely is not. SM does not promote their subtables under their brand. That’s a HYBE thing and I think they’re doing it mostly because they don’t have a legacy of older acts to make that whole company fan image. SM town is already 48299294 hours without adding any of their sub labels :cryingr: :angryr:

    yea i was gonna add that part but it's not at all relevant to what the op comment is. it's the same just without the promotion, that goes without saying or at least it should

  • SM keeps its sub-labels very very separate except for ScreaM and the classics label. They don't appear on the main corporate channels like SMTOWN global or in any of the companywide activities like SMTOWN shows. We're getting pounded about a whole winter album bringing in everyone on the main label and you notice you don't see anyone from Million Market or Mystic Story rolling out to any part of that.


    This is very different to say Hybe - you can tell me as much as you want that Ador is a separate label but there's a big ol' Hybe labels sticker on the video if I look it up on YouTube (it's on the Hybe labels channel). Same with Pledis. That's a distinction the label's fans make and not the casual viewer, which is exactly how Hybe wants it and is smart IMO to potentially build a following for the sub-labels as well as the large corporate brand.


    YG keeps its black label separate but we all know that's YG. ^^


    Million Market and Mystic Story don't promote their artists very heavily or with large budgets and they feel like small labels - HOWEVER, if you've seen the budgets of enough kr&B MVs and photoshoots and small girl groups, you can tell there is money there behind these labels. Billie's videos are very very nice for a nugu group.

    They also appear on the music shows with nice costumes and in Spotify playlists - the SM dollars are there, although they won't be the cover pic or have lots of promos with Spotify like an aespa. You'll also see SM's hand when these smaller artists pop up on larger artists albums or have that artist pop up on their - Moon Sujin (Million Market) with EXO-SC and NCT's Taeil, Chancellor (Million Market) with Taeyeon, Penomeco (at Million Market at the time) writing EXO's Tempo and NCT's Make A Wish, in addition to guesting on songs.


    The other place Billlie has access to is in terms of SM's in-house writers. MinGtion wrote RV's Queendom and NCT's From Home, in addition to many other SM songs, including Billlie bsides. Other frequent SM collaborators like Cazzi Opeia, Deez, Saay and Le'mon also pop up on Billlie's songs, which makes them very different to your average mid-tier/nugu group. These are all writers who worked on hits for Shinee, EXO and RV and wouldn't be touched by the budget of a tiny label. This is why their bsides are so strong.
