I saw an interview where an actor was asked this question, and I was curious what AKP thought about it
Article:
yes
yes
yes, it's acting for a reason
of course I mean it's acting
This is the first part of the interview and I agree with it 1000 percent:
"One is about equality of opportunity, and I'm completely in on that. Because we should want a world in which no matter your sexual orientation, your color or your heritage, everyone gets a fair whack," he continued. "But the other is about empathic imagination, and if we only allow people to be cast as exactly who they are, it'll be the death of it. So, the two separate conversations have to happen simultaneously. Because I'm not willing to support the death of empathic imagination. It's what we need most as a culture, and it's beautiful. It's the only thing that's going to save us right now."
The latter part is the one that pisses me off:
In 2018, actress Scarlett Johannsson was criticized for accepting a role as a transgender man. Her initial response was dismissive, but she later dropped out of the film and apologized, Vanity Fair reported. In 2019, she told As If that "as an actor I should be able to play any person, or any tree, or any animal."
A role is a role and an actor is an actor.
Gay, straight, bi and whatever in between...an actor is an actor.
I’d only be offended if they portray the gay characters terribly lol. Other than that acting is acting and a role is a role

Same
yes, that's the point of acting, that's the job, to play different characters
If they want they can, because thats why it's called acting
Yusei from the Japanese boygroup FANTASTICS (the dude on my profilepicture) for example said he allways wanted to do something like that, wich is the reason why his acting debut last year was with a gay romance drama. He was asked what he thought about his role and he said he suports LGBTQ and wants to make more people aware of things they might be too afraid to talk about with acting in such a drama.
Jun from the Korean boygroup A.C.E said something similiar as he was asked why his first main role in a drama was also a gay story. Jun said he wants to make more people realise that its nothing bad to love someone of the same gender since its a topic people in Korea seem to avoid a lot. He said that he wishes that gay people won't be judged that hard anymore in the future and can be freely together. He even added "Nobody questions when a man and a woman hold hands in public, but as soon two men do it, everyone thinks that its weird and I say it shouldn't be weird since they just love eachother"
It’s totally okay, and I actually admire how willing straight actors are to do such roles, especially men
Tho I do understand how people would prefer actual queer actors to play queer roles. The representation is already so small for them, so to give the little bit of it to a straight person isn’t ideal
Same with trans. I don’t think Pose would be as amazing as it is if it were a bunch of cis women playing as trans women
If actors can pretend to be superheroes who can mock the laws of nature and common sense and casually have insane genius levels of knowledge that would make Neil Degrasse Tyson look like a pleb I don't see why pretending to be gay is a step to far. At the of the day it’s your job to be someone your not.
To echo what everyone else has said so far, I'm fine with it. I'm fine it an allosexual (non-asexual) plays an asexual (to make the comparison more relevant to myself). As long as the role is done respectfully (like Todd in Bojack Horseman), I have no problem. If anything, I'd be happy. If an allosexual played an asexual, then they might gain a greater understanding of what it means to be asexual and that would be awesome. Plus, I'm always happy to see more, good, asexual representation since there is so little. It's a win-win for everyone involved to be honest.
