Is it better to be nugu in Korea but popular internationally or vice versa?

  • Honestly, no idea. The Western market has more potential fans (in the sheer number of people) and more countries while South Korea is only one country but being successful there is important too because that is where the companies and lots of idols are from and because (in my opinion), K-Pop is one part of their culture, so what the fans think there too is important as well. It's a complicated subject in my opinion that certainly has room to be discussed, I just don't know which one is more important, as I generally consider them equally important, at least for the most part. Have a great day/night!

  • They are not binary either or.

Western market is much larger, but then you have competition from all over the world, far more number of releases per period than in Korea. So unless you have broken out to the top tiers, a Korean act will have a 'comparatively' easier time in Korea.

Costs are bound to be higher in the West for Korean based acts to produce, promote, market, tour etc., compared to doing that in Korea, even if lot has moved online.

So depends on how much popular and how much nugu, than just playing domestic and international.

If extremely popular like BTS,BP etc. international being the larger market is better in terms of revenue.

If middling popular, then it is better to be so in Korea, where you compete with 100 , than 1000 internationally

If nugu, it does not matter, take any popularity, if Timbuktoo has a market for your music, go there.

And of course longevity, cultural connections make for better longevity, than purely content.

But nugus can't be thinking of longevity.

  • Without a firm base in Korea, it is hard for an act to keep it up for a long time because of the lack of a steady income.

Foreign tastes are more fickle, and since it is hard to form a base there, such acts are more vulnerable.

  • IU is more known internationally than Dreamcatcher. She have even had collab with BTS member. :sweatr1:

If you wanted to have fair comparison, you could compare Blackpink Lisa to IU

It is futile to use IU for such discussions.

Her fame comes from both acting and singing, no one can really differentiate which is which.

Neither is she a typical K-pop idol.

Best is to compare groups to groups.

  • nugu internationnally but popular in korea

because these "popular international group " once they disband they will all want to go solo in korea but because they are nobody there they'll flop and give up on music to become server in a coffee shop in gangnam

meanwhile groups popular in korea, even if they are not big internationally at least they have some recognition in korea and a casting director will bemore incline to hire an ex member of a group from a popular group in korea who will bring them ratings, than someone who was popular internationally but is the biggest nugu in korea and will not bring any benefit to them

being popular internationally only benefit the company and the investisor not the idols themselves

being popular in korea benefit to everybody

  • I think it is always better to be popular in SK. You won't or might not be making music forever especially with the way kpop companies manage idols, and once your idol contract is done, having a good solid reputation in SK allows you to venture into other stuff.

YEs, if an act is kinda popular in Korea, there are option to go into variety show (like Lee Mijoo of Lovelyz, which never really went anywhere outside of Korea and not too far inside there) or cast in dramas and become better known like Girl's Day members.

  • Imo the country where you live and/or work should be the priority as you'll obviously spend most time there. So Korean idols will need to rely on their Korean careers particularly when their idol careers fizzle out or they branch out, international popularity isn't going to help out much by then
