Kpop groups changing concepts/sound, is it a good idea?

  • I think it's important to try new things as long as the change isn't too drastic and if once in a while you go back to the old sound. If a ten year old group makes the exact same music as when they were rookies it will start to become boring

  • You'll never know if it's a good decision unless you try. If fans don't like then there's still the possibility of going back to older sounds or try something else, if they do like it then it's a win.

Saying that though there aren't many groups that have changed their style or image and still get good or better than before results. SNSD is the absolute master of it and others of the top of my head Big bang, T-ara, Girls Day etc.

  • If they weren't flopping or having problems fitting the concept idk why would they change it, especially when they are just starting their careers and didn't have a solid fanbase (weeekly for example). There's cases like AOA and gsd where a concept change was needed and they were successful with it but if they weren't doing bad with what they had I don't see a reason to rush it. I like when groups grow step by step, like twice or fromis

  • Well ... it was a good thing that A.C.E changed their music after their first 2 singles, because many people in Korea were not really having it and even international fans sometimes were like not really liking these, because they originaly wanted to be Korea's first "Hardstyle boygroup"

If they hadn't changed the music they would've floped hard probably and their CEO would've still be poor and wouldn't have gotten enough money to buy a company building after not owning one (they literally started in the basement of a restaurant...)

And if they hadn't changed the style than they would probably not even have any MV over 10 million views and I bet non of the members had ever started to become an actor (I mean 3 of the member acted in dramas so far) and they probably also hadn't given one of their members MC-positions in different TV-shows

... if they would've still made harstyle music than I bet they would've floped hard and maybe even disbanded. I mean those songs are good and all but the backlash they got for it where for example music shows asked them to cut out parts of the chorus ... that was really bad and that only cause of the hardstyle music ... if nothing had changed for them than they wouldn't have made it till now and I mean what I said. Their CEO said in the early times that she was sad not really giving her group what they deserve and that she feels sorry to not even be able to buy food but they came so far and made their CEO able to buy a company ... that wouldn't have worked if they had not changed anything

  • While I think that groups should be allowed to experiment and evolve, I wouldn't be a big fan of a sudden, drastic shift in sound. I feel like that occurs usually when a group starts chasing a market or tries following trends instead of finding a sound that fits them. Sometimes it works out. Like MX's first English album, All about Luv, was a departure for them and it ended up being an amazing album. It still felt like them too, just another facet of them. Sometimes tho, it doesn't work out and it just feels like a different group altogether.

  • If I don't enjoy their change of style I can still listen to their previous music...

it'll take more than just that for me to unfan them since like I've mentioned previously it's more of their personalty that makes me a fan rather than the music...

  • Seventeen tried this with Carats and it didn't work well. Fear was their first attempt of trying a dark concept and it wasn't much well received.

Left and Right then brought back their bright concept and it worked beautifully.

I think that evolving the music is better than changing. I've noticed that it's easier for me to drop groups who change drastically from their former sound (like HISTORY, that changed from a kinda alternative pop to the hip hop mania before disbanding) and I'm very loyal to groups who evolves musically (see SHINee as an example, who I've been a fan for +decade).

  • Yes, as long as it comes from a genuine desire from the members, and from a creative perspective. At worst you at least put out a risk-taking album, and you are proud of what you created. At best fans eat it up and it's the best thing EVER.

No, if it's to 'chase a trend'.

ofc having the same concepts after all those years get boring, but I don't think kpop groups should change their concept/sound so quickly

I was lucky that my faves changed their sound and I still loved it, but this did not happen for other groups sadly
