Weeekly didn't gain a international following after afterschool's spotify/youtube success? Why?

  • Except album sales i don't really see a good improvement in any other aspect. Their spotify and youtube streams for holiday are on the bad side when u consider how both on yt and spotify afterschool did 100M. It's serving faceless kpop viral track without much gains. Did the company not capitalize well on it? Or people just liked the song but didn't care that much about weeekly singing it?

Changed the title of the thread from “Weeekly didn't gain a international following after afterschool's spotify/youtube success?” to “Weeekly didn't gain a international following after afterschool's spotify/youtube success? Why?”.
  • They didn’t have casual stans and a big fandom in the 1st place not even surprised that holiday didn’t do well. Plus when after school went viral, their company didn’t promote on tiktok and it was rising in Korea so they could have booked some music shows and sent them to variety shows even the nugu ones it’s better than nothing.

  • They did nothing to capitalize off of it's success. Not even a cute TikTok or something like c'mon. Look at ENHYPEN, they have a viral bside and they are releasing cute videos and stuff for it.

Also I feel like they lack *that* member, the one who attracts stans to the group. It's like people cared more for the song than the actual group because of it.

  • I think I-FANS tend to bandwagon groups that are not Big 4 or girl crush. Like, they will hype them when they release a good song that's trendy, but not necessarily become invested (me included, I am guilty of this).

I think Weeekly was a victim of this. So was Momoland. Everglow is girl crush, and we see how long their international following lasted. I'm interested to see what IVE's spotify numbers look like on their next release.

This is why GGs usually NEED the Korean GP on their side. GGs usually only attract casuals unless they are lucky.

You make a good point about the "that" member thing. Like that member that gains the attention of casuals and is hyped to the point that everyone knows her even if they don't follow the group.

Tbh even stayc might end up a victim too. Though they actually have casual listeners and a fanbase.

With how ferocious the competition is in the 4th gen GG space, StayC is in danger of being left behind like Everglow was. StayC stole Everglow's thunder, then Aespa stole Stayc's. Now Ive is threatening all of them and we still have Kepler, JYPNGG and HYBENGG waiting in the wings. Plus Itzy and Idle.

  • It is really important for non-Big 3 GGs to get a hit/to be popular in Korea. If After school was popular in Korea the same way it was internationally, they will have probably gotten a few CFs and their next comeback will at least chart decently. In 5 years, most people won't be talking about the song unless it was a hit in Korea or from a Big3 + hybe group. This kind of song blowing up among kpop fans outside Korea is more beneficial to BGs, GG fans are mostly casual fans

  • Cause Stayc were also rising at the exact same time and they had a bigger hit and capitalized off it better and now it's kinda too late for Weeekly, they're gonna have to start fresh again.

Because both have same concept? But the thing is both captured different markets. One domestic while other international.

  • Stayc are doing good for a non-big 3 groups ASAP has 50M streams and stereotype has decent streams. If secure a hit in Korea people i-fans will be interested again.

Ngl at first i thought I'll make a comparison thread between streams of weeekly and stayc. Stayc growth on Spotify is way better than weeekly's even tho asap was not doing anywhere close to afterschool.

Asap's domestic charting got stayc more international fans than weeekly's spotify streams.

But again stayc overall was always bigger than weeekly since debut

Eh I think Jihan and Zoa can do it for visual stans. Monday too because she's this generations main vocal and main dancer. It's just that they didn't gain any steam, there's a lot of members, and they never all got showcased. I bet many of After School's listeners can barely distinguish the members.

  • The company didn't capitalize on it. I remember it was very difficult to find eng subs for their videos on YouTube and they didn't get much exposure like going to festivals or random shows. IST is at fault here, the girls are charming and pretty enough to get fans,Jihan and Zoa fit the korean standards the best, yet there's very few hype about them
