AOT didn't change the landscape of anime. Evangelion changed anime as we know and as a brand it's not even close to Pokemon. Not even Dragon Ball, One Piece, and Gundam combined matches Pokemon. Pokemon probably needs to be compared to Star Wars and I still give the edge to Pokemon. That's how big Pokemon is.
You are way off scale in your comparison. AOT needs to be compared to around popular series like Death Note or Full Metal Alchemist.

I don’t think the comparison is even fair. Pokémon is a whole brand spanning cards, video games, merch and a whole industry around it.

It is certain popular and one of the best selling ones lately. However, someone claiming AOT is more popular than Pokemon is out of their mind if he or she is considering global popularity. It seems like either a super AOT fanboy or an anime fan with tunnel vision which is understandable.
If you see MAL or even ANN, I'd say AOT is up there and more popular than Pokemon to users of these places, as anime aficionados tend to be dismissive of series marketed to children like this one despite being big brands. In this regard, this person wouldn't be wrong.
However, even with millions users, these communities are a blip compared to the overall global audience.
