Changed the title of the thread from “The fate of all former girl group members who still decide to pursue music” to “The fate of former girl group members who still decide to pursue music”.
  • Ha:tfelt (a.k.a. Park Ye-eun) just released a new music video last week, so you should probably link that one instead:

I quite like the song, which is definitely a bit more mainstream than most of her other releases.

  • tbh minzy's song was so disappointing- she was my bias in 2ne1 (a very unique group) and now shes out here releasing bland, dated tracks its like :-(

sadly 90, maybe even 95% of former girl group members that are now soloist not only not get attention from fans and media, but also they have low budget MV's with songs that don't appeal to GP

  • Ah does it happen often? Why don't they get better mv's and gp friendly songs? Is the lack of interest coming from the gp or the company or fans?

the thing is imagine if you are in SM, JYP or YG, but then after 7 years (sometimes even earlier) you move to a smaller agency, and I'm not talking about high-end, mid-high agency but like seriously small one, less known, or sometimes even new one...

Sunmi is a good example of how to not mess things, keep good relations with former agency and even release songs together - as she did with JYP.

It's always better to go solo when you still are a member of active and popular gg, and participate in group comebacks than to wait 7 years and then go solo...

It's not only gp, even I as a gg stan struggle to get behind most of what former group members turned soloists release. Once they leave the agency system and go indie, it's rare for them to release interesting material. There's a few exceptions like Dalshabet Subin but overall their stuff is quite uninspired, boring.

Thank you! Do you think an female idols who have been idols for say 7-10 years could compete with a newer gg, if both release hits? Who'd have a more stable career amongst the two?

Why do they have to leave the big 3? And are the big 3 in general good with solo promotions for their older solo gg members?

In Minzy's case, YG was NEVER going to give her a solo, and 2NE1 was neglected. 2NE1's last song was 2014, and she was trapped in her contract until she left in 2016. She literally had to leave if she ever wanted to release music again. Her big problem is that she went to a tiny agency and then left them to found her own agency, and her releases have been inconsistent and undersupported since.

They don't need to leave, usually all members of girl group get contract renewal offer, the thing is many of them is either tired to be in group, they are bit greedy to earn "more money" which is biggest mistake because they never will get more money lol, another reason might be that they don't want to split money from individual CF's with group members... there is also a factor of being tired of same environment you know you are trainee, then you debut under agency sometimes you are like 10-12 years or even more there... so they need a change. something fresh, new opening.

but overall if you look at Taeyeon she is still in SM and she drops bop after bop, and her MV's are beautiful

  • yup. She’s just releasing music she loves but it ain’t working out. Her and a lot of these women are very tough.

it's a whole shame- even CL my charisma queen isn't doing as well as she should be :pepe-sad:

  • Tysm! I'm sorry if I'm asking a lotta questions but in case these idols want more money and they reject contract renewal. What other avenue will make the same amount of money as their idol career? Like what do they leave it for in hopes of earning more money?

Thats really sad. She's such a talented girl. Could she possibly sign with a big agency again?

tbh I'm not sure if there are any other avenues that would make them the same amount of money. If youve spent years building the brand behind a successful group, leaving and trying to promote yourself is so hard. Maybe not completely starting from scratch, but pretty darn close. Whether they pursue acting, modeling, or continue singing, they know they won't make as much money. So they'd be happy pursuing music that is fulfilling for them rather than topping the charts.

Surprisingly I think being a broadcast jockey, a streamer, or a Youtubers probably makes the most money. Take Hayun from Brave Girls for example. She does Tik Tok and Twitch and has millions of followers and probably makes bank from donations.

And as for Minzy signing with a big agency again, it would be unlikely. Perhaps she might have been able to switch to a decently sized label right after leaving YG, but she probably felt like they'd restrict her freedom for her musical direction (which was the #1 reason why she left YG). Now, it's been years since 2NE1 was relevant so I'm not sure who would want to promote her. She seems to be happy doing her own thing, dancing in her own studio and releasing music that she likes, even if she isn't dominating the charts. Also maybe they don't want to be the centre of attention after all those years of fame and would like to take it easy.

Plus she was never as popular as the other members.

Even in SNSD, of the girls that have released solo albums/songs, only Taeyeon has had any impact on the charts. The others are not as well supported. (2 of them are doing well with acting).

  • Bom was the one with huge solo career potential. She could have been as big as taeyeon or bigger but she went no where.

Group success doesn't translate to solo success. Life isn't as nice without the group if u aren't popular member with the gp
