Idols who sing in Chinese on Korean music show (Show Champion) today

Then BTS should not be singing/selling English songs either.

We can't have it both ways.

Kpop used to be

Genres were largely foreign, but the lyrics, creators, performers were Korean.

But now - increasing percentage of English lyrics, a lot of foreign composition, only the label ownership and performers are largely Korean.

So why not Chinese or other languages?

Or are you saying that the music shows should require only Korean language performance?

Well I don’t agree with those comments, but I guess SM really needs to stop promoting WayV in Korea. WayV is not even successful yet in China, they should have promoted WayV more in China first. Keep promoting them in Korea will just make things worse.

a group can sing in whatever language they want but fans/antis can complain about that as well...

people want to defend SM so bad they ignore the loaded history and clash between Korea and China. China doesn't allow Korean idols anywhere near them for the most part, why should Korea be cool with Chinese singing on their turf?

and how is that comparable with English songs, the US has invited a ton of K-Pop groups to promote there by now (if anything we've heard more Korean songs performed in the US than English songs performed in Korea) and has a friendly relationship with SK overall.

I don't honestly understand the such deep seated animosity towards using chinese in a kpop song...

was it because korea used to be a protectorate of ancient china?

I don't get it, there's lots of love for chinese members of a group but then once they sing in chinese, there's some backlash -- some even stiff rebukes of the act...

plus english is used left and right in kpop.

i mean lots of asian cuisines are so similar and there are lots of variety so one can pick out any two random dishes and argue for a good half hour.

there's a thing in chengdu that one would pickle vegetables and then stir fry in hot oil and pepper -- that's the closest one I can think of right now. but kimchi is just pickled right? its not the same at all but they pretty similar.

Laysha is probably just small enough to slip through the cracks. Or do you think big groups don't like money and that's why nobody has toured China in years? Official posts and articles have gone as far as erase Korean idols if they were featured alongside others.

That maybe coz they still so small or have direct connection to Chinese agency.

Just like lay,Jackson,wayv .

They promote in china coz they have direct connection.

The only one who's not affected is the one who's already popular in china like t-ara and BigBang.

That's why gd make it into the news just by shooting a CF for chinese brand.

The news said "is the hallyu ban over??" when it still not over.

Why is there any 'ban' on using BTS as a reference?

And I did ask whether it was specific to Korean music shows or a general observations.

The original post did not explicitly specify it is Chinese specific.

So given the lack of context, it is a valid question and reference.

But with the context - political issues affecting culture, is messy. After all Korea still holds the surplus in trade with China, so why not ask other Korean producers to stop exporting to the hostile country?

Personally I don't like China's bully politics, but I also know that it is difficult to disengage in trade and as much as possible individual Chinese and individual Koreans should be protected from collateral damage.

SM and other companies, can't ignore the massive market China is, you mention US - have you not seen every major enterprise from NBA teams to Hollywood studios "kowtowing" to China, so as not to lose the market.

It is the reality everyone has to deal with, however unpleasant.

Thank you for pointing that out lol kpoppies be hypocrites ans bias because their fav idols are Chinese. We here in Korea have very serious issues with China. Its funny fans go crazy over possible ateez concert in Israel because of its bad press. But totally ignores China when China's government and actions are far worse than isreal could ever hope to achieve. But lets ignore that because they don't have kpop idols the hypocrisy is pathetic.
