Who would you describe as the most ahead of their time girl group in K-Pop history?

  • And why is it f(x)?

You put the wrong song in, this is their gamechanging song.

Although tbh, just like with their cover of SNSD's The Boys, my Izgirls did it better :danceb:

  • RaNia - Dr. Feel Good. If they had released that song during the sexy GG phase they might have seen more success.

  • I did not think to f(x) but it's an interesting answer.

I would say Glam. They are always discussed because of the scandal but they weren't really in style with the rest of Kpop back then. Their music was actually good. They found a balance between different concepts that were popular since they were badass, cute and fresh at the same time. They even have a song about being bisexual. It would have been more well-received these days.

  • I was coming here to comment f(x) lol. Their music really set the standard for experimentation and genre switching in in girl group music. And their music still inspires artists years later (for example pinkpanthress sampled their b-side "Ice Cream" in her song "Another Life" (2023))

  • In general SM groups.

The industry really does only just “eventually” catch up to SM and then somehow do it better than them lol.

True. I don’t know much about the music but this applies also for the vision.

The whole aespa lore and animated avatars that were their alter egos was handled so bad but it had so much potential because the idea itself is promising. They could’ve had collabs with real popular games from the start or invested in animated films with that idea in mind but instead did weird unexplained incomplete shit and left it there.

  • f(x) is probably the best answer.

I'm also interested in groups/singers that did y2k/youthful vibrant 90s before NewJeans so to add in a group and a soloist to the mix:

    Weeekly - After School

  • f(x) is the correct answer, But I'd also say Baby V.O.X has a place as well. They have a "collab" with 2pac, I know the song basically ended their careers but damn if that isn't the norm nowadays.

(Also yes I'm sharing the colour coded lyrics because seeing 2pac there makes me laugh.)

Their company claims they went through the correct channels to get the rights to it, but the family says they didn't. I don't think there was ever a suit but it was the reaction in Korea that ended their momentum at the time. One of the Korean media outlits started calling them Miari V.O.X. basically calling them prostitutes due to them even using the sample. It was a whole mess I read about when getting into them, one of the members left like a month later and the rest were out within a year.
