Who's the biggest kpop it girl of all time? Suzy or Jennie?

  • That's a tough question. Suzy has starred in several highly popular dramas and has built a strong reputation as an actress. In Korea, actors often seem to stay in the public eye more consistently than singers. Jennie, on the other hand, is known primarily as a singer, but unlike someone like Taeyeon or IU, she doesn't have a particularly strong vocal identity.

If we compare the eras they rose in, I’d say Suzy had far fewer rivals during her peak she really stood out. But looking at the current landscape, Jennie doesn’t seem to be clearly ahead of other popular figures like irene, Karina or Wonyoung. Thanks to her international exposure and global influence, Jennie might have a slight edge overall. Still, when it comes to prestige and recognition specifically within Korea, I think Suzy holds the upper hand.

  • I will give edge to Jennie because more globally known. I think one could argue Suzy is a bigger it girl in Korea. She still racking in high profile brand deals and they even have a term named after her for being an it girl. She was also in some high profile kdramas and she's known in that industry.

Somewhat off topic but I think Wonyoung has potential to be the biggest if she plays her cards right. She's currently the idol with the most brand deal and is the most known idol in her generation. If she pivots into acting. I think she could be the biggest it girl of all time.

  • Oh man, this is a tough one!

I adore both of them, and objectively they both have strengths (for example Suzy is an advertising powerhouse that Jennie could never be).

I think I am going to go for Jennie however, and these are my reasons:

The greatest of all time it girl in Korea is Lee Hyori (no debate allowed), and so the question I ask myself is who do I think could build up a legacy to rival Lee Hyori's in 15 years time? (Lee Hyori is 15 years older than them).

There's been a turning point for Jennie recently. I am not sure when to exactly pin-point it, maybe around the release of You & Me, but a turning point where the female general public in South Korea stopped hating on her and decided their stance was actually the opposite, they adore her now, in a similar way to how Lee Hyori is adored by female koreans and has been for decades. It wasn't too long ago Jennie was getting witch-hunted for wearing too suggestive nurse outfits in music videos or being "lazy" when she danced, but it's like a switch has been flicked and now she's the undisputed queen and the biggest role model for young South Korean women.

On the other hand, Suzy, as much as I love her, is losing her slice of the advertising pie to Jang Wonyoung (you can see this battle being played out in real time every time it goes to an ad-break on TV), and I am not sure Suzy will be able to transcend that and build up a truly lasting legacy like Lee Hyori has done.

Jennie and no one comes close.

No offense to Little J, but she's nothing without Blackpink, Suzy was big before MissA.

Jennie is not even in the TOP5 It Girl list! Let's not ignore an important fact that everyone in the TOP5 became popular alone, not because of their groups or their agencies.

    1. Hyori

    2. BoA

    3. IU

    4. Yoona

    5. Suzy

Hwasa and Jennie after them, and maybe Karina and Wonyoung, and I didn't even include other big It Girls from the 1st and 2nd gen.

Technically, no one is on the level of IU right now!

IU Selected As The #1 Korea’s Representative Female Advertising Model for 2025 by Industry Experts

The survey was conducted over two months by MAD STARS (Busan International Marketing & Advertising Festival), Korea’s only international event dedicated to marketing, advertising, and digital content. As the voting was conducted among experts working at the forefront of the advertising field (i.e., active advertising professionals, marketers, industry insiders)—not general consumers—the results are considered highly credible and authoritative. They serve as a prominent reference for advertisers and brands when selecting models for ad campaigns.

IU, who earns broad support across various age groups and has been selected for the second year in a row as Korea’s top female ad model, also received renewed praise for her acting earlier this year in the Netflix series #WhenLifeGivesYouTangerines. With the recent release of her remake album ‘A Flower Bookmark 3’, IU continues to thrive as a versatile entertainer as she maintains her dual career as a singer and actress.

This is literally every other mainstream Idol! Nothing special.

Like, come on now, even Hwasa is bigger in SK than Jennie. She owns SK and Jennie has the US.

She's literally the ONLY Kpop Idol ever called the Queen of Queen, and not by the fans!

As for Hyori, she basically adopted Hwasa. Formed a group (Refund Sisters) with her, did a whole "Dancing Queens on the Road" show with her, and so on.

  • That's your opinion and I will ignore it :joy: :)

That's not "just" my opinion, the stats came from industry experts and other artists or It Girls like Hyori. For example, if Hyori's opinion about Jennie counts when people say she's the biggest It Girl, Hyori's opinion should count every time she says good things about other Idols.

I said this many times. I hate the "It Girl" title, because it's ridiculous, especially when people say, XYZ Idol is a Global It Girl. Now, that is the biggest bs! Why? Because if we want to go global, no Kpop Idol would be in the TOP50! The minute you want to include them on a global list, it means you don't count them as Kpop Idols. Comparing them to other Idols whom are don't do any PR outside Asia is just another reason why globalizing this title is ridiculous.

You either use the It Girl title in Korea alone or nowhere!
