Would you consider Blackpink to still be the current biggest girl group even though it’s been nearly 3 years?
-
-
Yes.
Groups largely retain their status as of their last release, unless they disband/go on hiatus or of course comeback and do poorly.
-
-
No cuz like you said it's CURRENT BIGGEST GG
a GG can't be the current biggest gg if they aren't even active
and if we had to choose the current biggest gg in korea based on nostalgia and past achievements then snsd and twice would still be in the discussion
and can we actually even consider Blackpink the biggest GG when even when they made their comeback in 2022 with Pink venom
Aespa was charting higher on gaon digital yearly with a 2021 song
and both Gidle and NJ had songs charting higher than Pink venom and shut down on yearly digital chart
I mean even Red velvet "Feel my rythm" that nobody would consider as massive hit end up charting at #11 on circle yearly digital while pink venom was at #41
even their last comeback wasn't on par in Korea with the digital performance that the biggest GG of korea should have
so i would have a hard time to call them the biggest current GG now when they didn't even release anything for the past 3 years
-
-
yes
-
-
Absolutely not.
-
-
Nah, they are D- List
They became Nugupinks under Nugus in Nuguland

Yes.

I wouldn't necessarily say this in every situation.
If a group doesn't release anything any more and they don't do anything in music (or do poorly solo), then I would say they would lose status slowly and can be overtaken by other groups. In BP's case, I do think they are still the biggest, because they also do successful things solo and are still very much in the spotlight with lots of active fans.
Internationally, especially, they are still the most famous, I think. They're probably one of the only groups that non-Kpop fans know the name of. Maybe different for Korea, but don't want to speak for them.

they may not be active as a group, but it's a fact that they're the biggest, and no one has ever come close to surpassing them. NewJeans comes close to some extent, but their members don’t have the same individual impact. blackpink has also managed to maintain impressive longevity and success simultaneously.

Individual success does not and never has been strongly correlated to group success.
The group can lift the individual, but it's very rare the individual lifts the group. That goes for all music, not just K-Pop.
There will never ever be a BLACKPINK song half as success in the West as APT, for instance.

I wasn't really saying the opposite, actually. bp as a group is so strong they draw their strength from the group name. What I mean here is that even though nj has notable successes both in the West and in Korea, the group name doesn't allow its members to have the same level of individual impact.

Okay, but I don't really see what that has to do with group impact.
NewJeans the GROUP has in fact done things only BLACKPINK the group has done in the West, and even a couple things even BP hasn't done.
So it's inaccurate to say that no group has come close to them.

It is actually the reverse. BP Solos are successful because BP is a huge brand, that is why I call such cases as "Solunit" - Subunit of one member leveraging active group fandoms, as against Soloists, who were never in groups (IU) or their groups long in the past (Taeyeon, Beyonce, Harry Styles) or were the primary force of their groups (GD, Soyeon) etc.,
All BP, BTS, TWICE members are SolUnits for now. Whether they can keep these levels of traction, when the group is largely defunct, we won't know until some years pass without any group activity.

if a group's success also reflects on its members, isn't that still the group's success as a whole??
-
-
The set of people contributing to BP's solo success is most likely just a subset of Blinks. So their solo success is a testament to how big BP is.
-
And here we go again

No. It is not
Or Onces could use the success of Nayeon's solo to claim Twice the group were super successful in 2022. She had a #2 hit song after all
I can even use my own group, and say Mamamoo was a digital powerhouse in Korea in 2023, because Hwasa had a top 20 song.
It doesn't work that way. In most cases, you cannot put individual and group success in the same bucket. The rules don't change for BLACKPINK.
I only care about what they did in their last group comeback, and Super Shy outlasted both Pink Venom and Shut Down on the Billboard Hot 100.

Like you said, "in most cases," but in BP members' case, their personal success comes from the strength of the group. The fact that this isn't "always" the case for other groups doesn't change this reality.
Anyway, the truth is that BP is far ahead of NJ, and their long-lasting career and continued success prove it.

Long answer: YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES
Short answer: yes
Absolute yes

Personal success does not translate back to group success and never will.
Blinks better hope their not actually going to be released new songs outperform Pink Venom and Shut Down on BB Hot 100.
If they don't, I predict you will all have me blocked by the end of the summer .
And bringing up longevity is silly when comparing a ten year old group to one that isn't even three yet, so that's irrelevant.

Longevity matters in any year, if you start charting in your first year and can't do it more in your 3rd year then that's just what a trend group is. BP is charting since 2018 and with every cb so yeah, longevity matters as much as peak.

No, longevity matters when you're discussing the entire career of a group.
If this was an all time discussion, then career longevity is one of the most important factors.
That topic isn't relevant in a discussion about who is the biggest group TODAY or if any group has come close to the PEAKS of BP TODAY.
The answer for both is NJZ. Don't make me achievements spam. We know the numbers. Or at least I do.
Literally statistically they are the very definition of a group that has come close to doing or matching what BP has done internationally.
They're more popular in Korea and Japan, and can compare respectably to them in America.
Take off the homer goggles for a second and use your eyes.

If you think they can tour in America like BP did then it's you who are being delusional. The only gg who is comparable to BP in tour attendance is Twice and with facts to prove, not just "feeling".
And yes, today no gg could reach BP peak internationally bc BP did it with Ddu4, KTL, HYLT, IC, Pink Venom and Shut Down, not with just one or two songs and next cb bye, no entry, no big streams, nothing.

even tho bp is not active they are still the biggest as group rn, and ı think you need to take off the homer goggles since you are fan of nj but ı'm not even a blink.

This was BP in 2022 with their flop cb
And this is the most recent numbers of first 24h bc it shows interest:

A top30 and just IU could break it with a feat with a BTS member.
I won't bring up others stats bc i think Spotify is enough to show BP relevance ww.

Who TF was taking about touring? Stop using fallacious strawman arguments to defend your girls. They deserve better. Now let's play a game.
It's called the Don't Bullshit game.
The rules are simple. Answer my questions directly and without spin and let's see where they take us.
Ready?
What are the three biggest streaming years by a girl group in Spotify history?
Who's the fastest girl group to 6 billion streams on Spotify?
What's the second longest charting girl group song in BB Hot 100 history?
What song holds the record for most weeks on the BB 200?
What girl group has the record for most songs on the BB Hot 100 in a single calendar year?
What girl group has a #1 best selling album on the Billboard 200?
What girl group has the record for the best second week ever on the BB 200?
Please answer these questions. Anyone can play.
I will ignore any messages that don't have all the answers to these questions.

Cool records, but where is the longevity of the supposed biggest gg? In 2024 where were they international wise with their most recent cbs?? Overpowered by even baemon on Spotify who you love to talk about how they flopped.
I'll tell you something: BP can have some records taken, that's no problem, but they'll keep charting on hot100 with every cb, they'll keep dominating Spotify, yt and international charts each cb and they'll still chart in the top5 in all kcharts while doing it.

This isn't how you play the game.
Try again.
