What's gone wrong with JYP's GG's?

  • honest question, no shade. I like Twice, Itzy, and Nmixx a lot actually. But they have been in a downward trend for the last few years. is this an individual group issue or a JYP issue? certainly for Itzy and Nmixx the musical choices have been questionable at times.

Twice is obviously towards the twilight of their career and still going strong. Itzy was once considered the leader of 4th gen but has fallen out of the top 3, Nmixx had a good start in terms of album sales but since Jini left it seems to have been downhill since then.

Changed the title of the thread from “What's gone wrong with JYP's GG” to “What's gone wrong with JYP's GG's?”.
  • Twice and Itzy are fine and Nmixx I guess as Big3 groups always do well! But it’s sad Nmixx haven’t had a hit yet! At least Twice and Itzy did.

I think for Nmixx two things 1 being Jini as you mentioned I know a lot of fans were upset when she left and with no public explanation

The second I think their debut era was so hated by Korean public it put people off for good. They can still chart with this comeback as they only just started promoting!

  • I think Jyp messed up with debuting nmixx only a couple of years after itzy AND debuting them with a concept somewhat similar to itzy.

yes nmixx has the whole “mixxpop” thing going on but when it comes to certain songs between itzy and nmixx you can exchange them for either group and they could pull it off. they’re on the thin line of being too similar with their experimental/wacky sound.

tbh i feel the only way jyp can have another mega successful girl group is if they go the same route as twice again. a large korean girl group reminiscent of early twice could definitely help them propel back into the force they used to be imo. :pepe-shame:

  • Itzy & Nmixx have been sabotaged by their producers. Twice are merely an example of Korean pop fans being too fickle and afraid of change in the long-term. When they're not busy headlining international stadium shows & music festivals, I'm sure they're crying into their piles of money, wondering where it all went wrong.

Or just debut the new girl group with good music! If Nmixx debuted with the type of music they release now things would be very different :!:

I do agree with both groups being similar in concept earlier! Nmixx easily could have been a 5th gen group? Not sure why JYP wanted 2 4th gen groups instead :/

And still they’re planning on debuting a new girl group either this year or (most likely) 2026. :sweatr1:

I just hope whatever kpop girl group comes out that company follows the twice blueprint. We need more ggs like early Twice

  • Their releases are extremely inconsistent in terms of quality, direction and genre.

Twice. They matured their sound and I like it more than their cutesy sound, but lately their releases have been really underwhelming such as One Spark, and Strategy. Tho MiSaMo gets very good tracks, so does their solos. So idk why can’t JYP give Twice good tts anymore.

Itzy. Their direction is a mess. In one cb they try to appeal to Korean market, in another one to international market. Like “Cake” charted decently in Korea, and they completely changed the sound for next cb and they couldn’t chart at all.

Or how they can’t even choose the main tt correctly. No sane person in their mind would choose Gold over Imaginary friend, but here we are. Sneakers killed Itzy’s international hype, but it charted in top 10(?) in Korea. At that point JYP, should’ve put clear direction, and choose what market does Itzy going to appeal.

If Itzy is going international - then Release tts like Cheshire, Loco, Mafia, Wannabe

If Itzy is going for domestic appeal - Go for Sneakers and Cake.

But unfortunately, JYP wanted to sit on 2 chairs and it backfired massively. One cb - international appeal(Cheshire), next cb domestic appeal(Cake).

This inconsistency made their momentum extremely sporadic and killed all the hype in between cbs.

Now Nmixx- hot take, I like O.O and Dice more than any Nmixx tts. I’m not liking any of their title tracks since then. But I think JYP, figured out their direction more or less, so my opinion about their current tts doesn’t really matter. Their tts are now charting more or less decently compared to other current JYP ggs. And Nmixx’s music wouldn’t appeal international market ever, so I think JYP made the right decision to focus in Korea. Their visuals also helped them a lot. Nmixx won’t breakthrough internationally, so it is right a choice for the members to fully focus in Korea.

  • one word : BORING

and it's not the music let's stop lying to each other, tomorrow Itzy or twice or even NMIXX can release Love dive, Supernova, Perfect night or Tomboy and it would still flop hard everywhere

JYP GG are just respectfully Boring, their comeback are not exciting

A song will flop everywhere if you're not able to tease it and build expectations for it and it's where JYP suck

JYP doesn't know how to create a concept for his gg, and create their own identity so when you put a JYP GG next to another GG

and you show them to someone and you ask them "tell me if tomorrow these two groups are releasing a song which one you would be interested in ? "

Like for example if tomorrow someone show me this pic of Itzy and this pic of Aespa and ask me to choose only one group to listen to their song tomorrow

GOLD (English Ver.) - Single par ITZY | Spotify

JUKEBOX : aespa conquièrent le catwalk avec Whiplash - dear. korea

My choice will directly go to Aespa easily cuz i would think OK this girl have something, they have charisma and i want to see what they do musically

while looking at itzy picture i'm thinking "ok this girl will do what all the other artist i already listen do"

  • People who actually think that Music do everything are so delusional

"Born to be " or even "Untouchable" could have been much bigger if they had the promo around these songs create hype and build up expectation for the release of these songs

One good example of this music being more about building up expectations and interest now more than the music

is the example of the summer brat with Charli XCX

She was in the industry for such a long time and she always did tons of great music

but her old project were always promoted the normal way

and for her "Brat" album she went for the complete opposite and did the things in Big

she spent months teasing brat album and building up hype for the release

the brat wall where even non charli xcx fans started to be curious about what it was

and with all these promos she went from an artist that nobody care about to an artist where everybody was talking about her

and it's not because she spent all her years in the industry releasing bops that suddenly everybody turns up for the Brat era

it's because she was able to promote her album to make ppl curious to listen to what she would have to say in it

and it's exactly in building hype and expectations that GG like NJZ, Aespa, IVE, lsrf are excelling

    and where JYP flop, sucks

  • JUKEBOX : aespa conquièrent le catwalk avec Whiplash - dear. korea

Looking at this picture, and recalling Aespa's concepts and styles since debut, SM (or Lee Sooman?) really went out of their way to create something different as Aespa's theme and concept. Aside from the SMCU virtual reality that was questionable in terms of successful execution (and abandoned after LSM's leaving), Aespa had a girl crush-ish concept that was a different flavor from the usual girl crush: more like cyber(punk) crush, or hitech crush.

In the end, looks like it has worked for them.

  • Regarding JYP, aren't there any plans for a new girl group? It has been a while since their last one, NMIXX and aren't they the only Big 4 company without a 5th gen girl group right now?

Not sure what went wrong with Itzy and NMIXX except maybe wrong choices, but for TWICE I think that the loss of BEP as their main composer/songwriter was the biggest cause for a drop in their Korean digital charting. This combined with a redirected focus towards international promotion and western success, led to a decreasing presence of TWICE in SK.

  • Sneakers killed Itzy’s international hype, but it charted in top 10(?) in Korea.

Wasn't the success of the song in Korea largely due to Cha‍eryeong's viral appearance on Lee Yo‍ung-ji's YouTube show? I d‍on't think it would've performed as well without that virality.

And Nmixx’s music wouldn’t appeal international market ever, so I think JYP made the right decision to focus in Korea. Their visuals also helped them a lot.

I think this is the first time I've heard NM‍IXX referred to as a "visual" group.

  • You decide what music to listen to based on photos of the artist? Very odd. :/

  • You decide what music to listen to based on photos of the artist? Very odd. :/

wow you really pick whatever fit your narrative and then run with it

i said from a non fans perspective if you don't know the artist if i stumble on two artist, i'll choose to listen to the one who seems to fit more what i want

people will not listen to every artist in the world first of all it's impossible and people don't have waste time to listen

so if you end up on spotify or youtube music new releases where only the cover of your album shows, then yes you need to catch the attention of people if you want to make them listen to your songs

it's typically what made Sneakers go viral, the song start to climb thanks to charyeong going viral

but Knetz have been asking for JYP to change the cover for a more colorful one since day one to catch the attention of people and make them listen to the song

and the moment they song started to rise faster

  • You decide what music to listen to based on photos of the artist? Very odd. :/

and yes when a group seems hasbeen

you need to be able to reinvent yourself and makes wants to people to check your music by catching their attention with promotions

it's the exact reason why people started to give Charli xcx attention with brat when nobody cared about any of her previous project

The same exact reason why Addison rae start to get momentum when her previous stuff flopped
