What's gone wrong with JYP's GG's?

  • wow you really pick whatever fit your narrative and then run with it

I didn't pick any narrative, I responded directly to what you said yourself. The fact that something has to pique your interest visually tells me it's not even the music you're interested in. Music is audible, not visual. You just want an aesthetic.

  • I agree and a perfect example of this was their attempt at a kpop adjacent western girl group. Vcha and Katseye debuted at the same time and when comparing the 2 you could see Hybe understood the market better than JYP. When you look at styling and music selection it was easy to see why many gravitated towards Katseye and didn't care for Vcha

With pop music, the music isn't everything and marketing can be more important than the actual music. Many of the big popstars in 2024 had their breakout year due to marketing. Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX, Doechii, Tate McRae, and other stars have been around for some time. What was key for these acts is how they marketed their brand. Sabrina is probably the best example of that her EP in 2023 sold 40k units meanwhile her breakout album sold 500k.

Also, I like your example with Charli because as a fan you were right how everybody was curious with the rollout.

Back to kpop, jype issue is not the music because I think Itzy, Nmixx, and Twice make great music. I think some of the issue falls into which song they choose to promote or make their title track. I am unsure how you select Gold over Imaginary friends as the lead title track. The same could be said for Kill my doubt EP where they went with Cake instead of Killshot. I think they don't have the wisest people making decisions when it comes to selecting title tracks.

I think they need to market their groups better because I don't really feel they do much to generate hype for their projects. I can't remember the last jype project that had a lot of hype due to marketing. I think they play it safe and boring and that is most likely the reason why their groups aren't bigger. Twice is Twice, so I will just say it's why Nmixx and Itzy aren't bigger. Both groups have strong idols that excel in certain aspects in being an idol. There's no reason members in Itzy and Nmixx shouldn't be bigger.

  • I always roll my eyes when fans blame the companies for all their faves failures.

But with JYP, there may be something about it, 3 GGs that are just not performing (in the charts) as expected.

  • Stop including Twice in these threads. They are a decade old group. They had their extreme fame in Korea. Let them rest and just tour, sell millions of albums, and make money.
