2023 IVE or 2024 aespa? Whose year was more impressive?

  • Whose year was more impressive? 36

    1. 2024 aespa (20) 56%
    2. 2023 IVE (16) 44%

I don't feel like spamming a bunch of stats, but for those who've forgotten how dominant 2023 IVE was, if you remove NewJeans, it was the most dominant year in Circle history.

Again, if not for 2023 NewJeans, IVE would've swept all the daesangs too. Easily. I'm sure there are some Dives who still think I Am should've won SOTY over Ditto (they'd be wrong but that's how big of a hit it was)

I don't think I need to detail what aespa have done, since it's still fresh.

    Now VOTE

  • Aespa

It's not even up to debate

Ive had a very impressive year in 2023 but it was just in korea

Aespa have been dominating in 2024 in korea and internationally

Ive had 2 comeback in 2023 with "i've ive" and "i've mine"

I've ive did incredibly well with kitsch and i am

But "i've mine" have been very underwhelming with song flopping internationally and very poor longevity in chart

    On the other side

Aespa did incredibly well with armageddon album

And they reproduce the success with whiplash success which 3 months after release is still charting on apple music global and still in the top 2 of every chart in korea

  • Btw using cumulative weeks in top 10 is kinda stupid to act like IVE in 2023 did better than aespa

When all it matter is when they cameback

Obviously IVE spend more weeks in top 10 cuz they dropped kitsch in March 2023

In comparison aespa dropped Supernova in May 2024

Obviously IVE would have the time to accumulate more weeks in the top 10 of melon if they came back much earlier than aespa did in 2024

It's kinda logic that's why using this as an argument is kinda stupid cuz it's not a reflection of how each group perform in the chart

But it just reflect which one came back earlier than the other one

  • Aespa

It's not even up to debate

    Huh.

It literally is up for debate.

I Am is statically a bigger song than Supernova. And their digital charting in 2023 was literally a tier above aespa's. I'm pretty sure IVE had the best album sales. They also started the year with the second (or biggest depending on how you rank Love Dive) biggest hit of their careers and then ended the year with a PAK through Baddie.

And the MelOn Weekly chart is literally one of the best ways to grade chart longevity. As the name implies, it only updates once a week, so a group that is able to stay there multiple weeks cumulatively is being mass streamed by a lot of people with very little drop off.

Also, why are you acting like IVE had an empty house? They literally came back in the same window as aespa, LE SSERAFIM, GIDLE, NewJeans and Jungkook.

  • Where’s the both option Yama :/ I refuse to vote until you provide a both option :!:

    Not going to happen.

Only one girl group gets to stand on the podium next to 2023 NewJeans (the single most dominant year in girl group history by a factor of 10) and 2024 NewJeans (cumulatively still lapped everyone).

But if I decide to be nice, I can asterisk 2024 NJ due to extenuating circumstances, and say this is to figure out silver and bronze.

I personally have 2023 IVE above 2024 aespa, but I think recency bias will be hard for people to fight against.

  • I don't know the numbers, but in 2023 New Jeans overshadowed everybody, so whatever Ive achieved it would have not been enough to impress.

2024 Aespa did not have that issue and it is not that they had empty house, they did go against IU - always formidable, a resurgent Day6 and some viral hits from TWS, Bibi & Rose.

Yet the honours of 2024 went to them.

    So that was impressive.

However the true test will be when all 3 - Jeanz, Ive, Aespa release at least EPs in the same period.

  • 2023 IVE was powerful enough to chart their Pepsi ad song and their Japanese release, something 2024 aespa couldn't come close to doing.

And as I mentioned, the house was packed for all their 2023 comebacks.

Recency bias is one hell of a force, for the vote discrepancy to be so heavily in aespa's favor right now.

Sure recency bias is a factor.

But to a casual watcher of Kpop - 2023 was the year of Jeanz, little point in discussing others.

Whereas 2024, Aespa though not as dominant, had the lead.

    Gallup disagrees

    Where is the disagreement.

2023 New Jeans is ahead of them all.

Are you indicating that in 2024 also New Jeans is ahead of Aespa?

Sure but in 2024, New Jeans had other reasons to top the survey than just music.

I was looking only at music and in 2024 Aespa's new music was ahead of all the 2024 releases, Circle/Melon - not Gallup.

  • NewJeans is an alien group and is a poor reason for downgrading IVE.

You can't penalize IVE for that. Pretty much any girl group would have been overshadowed by peak NewJeans in 2023.

That doesn't make IVE's thorough dominance of everyone else less impressive.

Also, "Supernova" was ahead, not all their music. Armageddon dropped. Hot Mess dropped. All their solo tracks dropped. They weren't all hits or even close.

IVE essentially charted all their songs, at least briefly at worst. aespa did not.

  • Fine, if the numbers say so.

But impressions and impressiveness are not always proportional to the numbers.

Notice how Armageddon didn't make the list? Not to beat a dead horse, but I just need to establish a baseline for comparing the groups. 2023 IVE were monsters.

  • Both are really similar tbh, I wouldn't put any above the other.

If we rank the songs released in the year, it's basically:

    I am=Supernova

    Kitsch=Whiplash

Then thanks to its longevity Armageddon seems a bit bigger than Baddie but Ive had Either way making it into the top 10 for some weeks and Off the record did better than Live my life.

I'm not counting Up since even if it's under Aespa's credits is a Karina solo, and the rest of the songs are meaningless.

The difference in points comes from Ive having a better previous year than Aespa (Ive 2022>>>Aespa 2023) but ranking the years themselves is a virtual tie, the weeks in the top 10 are actually a quite good reference, 4 weeks more or less could be because of timing or small differences in the success of some songs, but the fact that they're that close explains everything.

The NJ ridiculous success back to back in their comebacks rose the bar, but both comebacks I've Ive and Armageddon are probably among the biggest gg comebacks ever regarding Korea. For example the only 3rd gen gg comebacks comparable are Square up and The Album (and this last one including the prereleases months before)

Obviously IVE spend more weeks in top 10 cuz they dropped kitsch in March 2023

In comparison aespa dropped Supernova in May 2024

Regarding this, both songs (and comebacks in general including I am/Armageddon) were out of the top 10 before the end of the year, so the timing had no impact at all. If anything you could say that about Whiplash, but Baddie was also charting in the top 10 at the end of 2023.
