  • Music Review: Blackpink K-pop star Rosé's debut solo album ‘Rosie’ is heartfelt, but slightly sleepy.

Rosé, the nightingale of the massively popular Korean girl group Blackpink, has flown the nest and launched her first solo album “Rosie.” She’s the first of the awesome foursome to release a full-length solo record, and in English at that. Members Jisoo and Jennie have previously released singles, and Lisa is gearing up for her own studio album in 2025.

Across “Rosie,” titled after Rosé's nickname to communicate a kind of personal intimacy, the singer goes to great lengths to detach herself sonically from her band. Unlike Blackpink’s high energy electro-pop output, Rosé’s solo material is that of a coffee-house dweller with a sideline in romantic drama. But don’t expect finger-plucked acoustic guitar balladry exclusively — “Rosie” is reserved in some moments, full of life in others.

The album starts off chipper, with the soaring piano ballad “Number One Girl,” the cool synth-pop track “Two Years,” the dynamic, catchy Bruno Mars collaboration “Apt.,” and the contemporary, Taylor Swift-indebted pop of “Toxic Till the End.” But it invariably slows down, preferring fairly stripped back production throughout. She’s got the voice and she’s flaunting it; it’s her prerogative to showcase her range at the expense of a more energetic beat.

Across 12-tracks, the album studies heartache over lost loves (“It’s been two years and you’re still not gone/It doesn’t make sense that I can’t move on,” she sings on “Two Years”), missed chances (“Are we lovers or friends/'Cause it’s as good as it gets” in “Call it the End”) and ambivalence over situationships that probably should’ve been nipped in the bud but staggered along, strung by the power of lust and not much else. (That one is everywhere — particularly in the dubious boyfriends of “Toxic Till the End” and “Gameboy.”) Who can’t relate?

The album is an emotional rollercoaster easy to empathize with, stuffed with songs that articulate the trials and tribulations of early adult years — the search for connection and getting dragged into romances that lead nowhere. But throughout, fans of both Blackpink and Rosé might miss the spirited songs of her group. After all — your 20s are for partying, too — not just heartbreak.

That's why this is a Rosé album, not a BP one :pepewhat:

Their solos being different from their group songs is the right decision imo. They are still a group and will cb with their own BP sound, they are so right to explore others genres they love!

I'm anticipating even more. If I want to listen to BP kinda like songs I will listen to BP :thinkerpepe:

  • The first half is really strong, second gets weaker but stay a little longer is the song to highlight the album for me. Her new vocals just eat and I hope she used them for the group cb cause she sounds just mature and powerful

Taste. "stay a little longer" is an amazing song. I really wish this was the title track with a music video.

  • Overall it's a nice debut album, and cohesive. It does get a bit samey and boring to me but no song stands out as bad, and it has a few I love. She sounds great, and I like some of the lyrics.

APT. is easily the best on the album, but gameboy, drinks or coffee and stay a little longer are also good.

  • Nice album, very cohesive but it really doesn't make a strong impression beyond what the other indie pop girls are doing. 2 years, not the same, and Toxic are good but they sound a bit like Midnights scraps

Loved all the other songs, especially too bad for us and dance all night

Drinks or coffee is the masterpiece of the album

Minor nitpick but can we start capitalizing song titles again?

  • It's decent, but I don't think it compares to the other pop artists albums. I think it gets repetitive, but I did like the stretch between toxic till the end to gameboy. I felt she did better with the songs that were supposed to be fun like apt, drink or coffee, and gameboy. Happy for her, and I saved some songs to my playlist

  • This is not k-pop, more like pop. I'm glad that Rosé decided to leave k-pop to realize her own talent.

It's definitely not K-pop. Honestly, it's probably closer to the music Rosé envisioned herself creating when she was a kid. I feel like she always had a good sense of what she wanted to make, but couldn't due to obligations with the group.

Either way, both sides of the coin are great. I don't think one is necessarily better or worse than the other. I dislike the narrative that K-pop is somehow inherently inferior to Western pop.

  • "toxic till the end" sounds like a mashup of Taylor Swift's "Cruel Summer" and Olivia Rodrigo's "vampire." I love both, so it's not necessarily a bad song for me. Just not anything new.

She sounds like Selena Gomez on a number of the songs, such as "3am" and "not the same." That's not criticism, but just an observation.

"stay a little longer" is the highlight and standout of this album for me. It showcases her vocals and songwriting well. I wish it got some promotion.

  • after a couple listens, toxic till the end grew on me. like it a lot.

it's a good album. a few snoozes here and there, but I'm satisfied with it overall. her vocals have improved very much, especially in tracks like stay a little longer and call it the end, you can hear that quite well.

In her interview she mentioned even teddy was impressed how much she improved vocally, especially using her natural tone. She must took some kind of vocal lessons in the past year.

It doesn't help that her producers are basically running the pop industry rn, so similarity is unavoidable

I understand wanting to appeal to the market you're going for and time really not being on her side but so far, kpop idols making their debut here aren't making a huge effort to distinguish themselves from who they're taking inspiration from.

Jungkook was basically "name a 2000s pop boy", this is "name 20s pop-indie girl". Both put out great albums but the flavor is just lacking and it somewhat takes away from how personal she tried to make the album.

    Still, great album
