Hypocrisy of ifans: Koreans have no reason to be upset (but we do)

  • Once again, ifans are telling Koreans to shut up because they are upset about the upcoming Jisoo drama Snowdrop. Ifans are accusing Koreans of being ignorant of their own history.

Imagine if an American singer (for ex. Selena Gomez) starred in a comedy set in 1960s Civil Rights movement era, just as BLM protests started taking off. Could you imagine the fucking reaction? People would be straight up wildin’ out on social media and Selena Gomez fans shielding the drama with excuses about “wrong assumptions” would all get cancelled asap.

Basically this is what is occurring in Korea. Due to recent events they are highly sensitive about painful historical issues, especially those that get a “comedic” treatment. Regardless of the specific plot lines. And this is why Koreans have every right to be upset and express their anger. And ifans are very disrespectful to not only minimizing the pain felt by generations of Koreans but also telling them to shut the fuck up about it.

  • Oh yes, because of course there never was a comedy set in a WWII death camp. Such things don't exist because they would be automatically offensive and terrible. Sure.

  • JTBC is telling knetz the same thing though.

  • all this anger and you're not korean

btw jisoo fans or i-fans have all decided to give the silence treatment/aka don't interact , don't respond

so jtbc kind of on their own here, the producer and writer have the key for change and to LISTEN , not us or the actos

  • All JTBC gotta do is release the damn official plotline because so many things have still yet to be answered, despite their statement. Black comedy surely didn't help making things clearer, and the fact that people are already sending death threats to people in the production isn't helping at all.

  • I agree and I totally get why people in Korea are upset. It's definitely not right for I-fans to shut them down, I mean how would you guys feel if Korean fans started shutting BLM down? It's not the same issue but it's still about history and issues from history that are sensitive.

the thing is they don't want to spoil anything, it's obv the drama will be filled with twists so their hands are tied. all they can do rn , is listen to the complaints and make sure not to cross them

  • i'm just glad to get to see Jisoo's acting skills, what is all the fuss?

Koreans are triggered because Jisoo's drama is a "dark comedy" set in a horrific time in Korea's history where many people suffered and died . Making things worse is that there's talk of Chinese sponsorship money and influence (ie. making the communists not seem as bad, but this is unconfirmed or could be edited out). You know how people are with their sensitivity.

I think all this Soojin shielding affected you if you think it's acceptable that the Holocaust is interpreted as a comedy.

JTBC has already removed all of their Chinese sponsorship cash. Now it's up to them to make another statement in regards of the story and controversies to make things clearer if they're so sure that Snowdrop has nothing to do with these rumours as they say.

  • but none of this is even confirmed, like we don't know wtf the plotline even is. how are you about to criticize a drama no one's even seen yet??

The specifics of the plotline isn't the issue. It's the setting (1980's Korea in the middle of an authoritarian regime) and that it's being treated as a comedy during this time when there's tension with China and North Korea, who are also blamed for related incidents. There are still people who are alive who lived and suffered it or who had family who died due to the events then. Even if the drama doesn't touch any of the horrible history, there are still a lot of painful memories from it.

So does it mean a drama cannot be made about that time period, even if it doesn't touch on the horrible history?

That's like saying no movie should ever be made about certain time periods or events in the past.

The Titanic should not have been made, movies about the Holocaust, movies about 9/11, should not have been made etc.

what the tensions with NK and China have to do with South Korea examining its history is, well, that one beyond me, but if South Korea can't deal with its own history then that is deep issue, and complaining about one drama does nothing but continue the nonsense.

  • I honestly didn’t see any blink on my tl calling Koreans ignorant or other things. They just want for her drama shooting and airing to go smoothly which is understandable. The issue is really complicated I’m guessing JTBC want to keep quiet until the eps aired and people can judge for themselves just like what happened with cloy. I’m not sure it will be enough now

    Your average ggs enthusiast...

  • I don’t know about the Korean history and do not want to comment on that but to the black comedy part there are several black comedy movie about the authoritarian regime and state DDR of Germany that tackle on the bad part of it and make fun of how bad it was. So it always depends on how you deal with certain topics. There are also several comedic movies and theater plays about the third empire.

Because it literally involves communists in the conflicts that occurred. And of course, a lot of innocent people who weren't communists also suffered through it

Your answer is nonsensical. So you remain on brand.

The "communists" here were in theory the victims of the South Korean regime at the time - after all, that is what the dictatorship used to justify the dictatorship, fighting Communism.

South Korea's inability to deal with its own past falls squarely on South Koreans, just as American's inability to deal with their own history falls on Americans.

Asking for "understanding" about people's sensibilities regarding their inability to be honest with history is, well, not something I care about.

What is wrong with comedies set in the 1960's?

  • So does it mean a drama cannot be made about that time period, even if it doesn't touch on the horrible history?

The Titanic should not have been made, movies about the Holocaust, movies about 9/11, should not have been made etc.

Reply 1988 (a romcom) was set towards the end of these events, they even have the student protest as part of the plot.

Than again, I do not know how people reacted to that, maybe many people did criticize the show.

  • You are just showing your lack of basic understanding of Korean society. As a whole, they blame communism and communists for the problem and atrocities they faced after WW2.

So even if the South Korean government was killing alleged innocent communists, they will ultimately lay the blame on North Korea (and indirectly to China) for fomenting unrest and causing their government to take extreme measures that impacted them for decades.

  • Hi. I came here after seen jtbc clarification and my response is: shut up and wait fot the drama to air people. Stop jumping in conclusion when nobody knows what is about anyway..

And you again op. Always in BIG3 groups "scandals".... Talking your shit thinking is a good shit, but is just your usual delusional shit.

Koreans know a lot more than you do, they know the language and history. Most ifans don't know either, so why do they have a right to tell Koreans to shut up?

The drama already lost a sponsor. These companies who are paying a bunch of money, are they also just "big 3 haters"?

I'm saying in general, not just koreans. I fans too and I'm saying this bc we don't even know what the history will be.

They are not, but you are.

  • I agree but like... we dont even know the plot. all of these negative reactions are bc of unconfirmed rumors.

It's a mixture of both. They are upset at the confirmed back story of the drama and that it's being done as a dark comedy. And the rumors that it would portray communists in a better light while making the Korean government look worse.

Different culture, different strokes, mate. What's okay for you, might not be okay for others. Who are we to tell Koreans what is okay or not okay.😉
