Can you tell what company an idol trained at based on their singing style?

  • I was listening to fromis_9 Seoyeon's covers of some songs, and she sounds so much like a YGE artist. It makes sense because since she was a former trainee there. Are you able to notice this in other idols, especially when they used to train at a different company than the one they're currently at?

Most notably her covers of "I Hate You" and "You & I":

  • Nope

Byeongkwan and Chan of A.C.E are former JYP trainees and Wow a former YG trainee, I hear non of that in anyone's voice

Noa, a Japanese singer, trained in YG for 7 years and I don't hear it too, not even when he sings in Korean

Shogo of the Japanese group INI is a former CUBE trainee, I hear nothing

Shion of the Japanese group JO1 is a former FNC trainee, I also hear nothing (but than again, he said he couldn't speak Korean and barly even sing when he came to Korea and so his whole training was kind of a flop till he got kicked out)

U of ONF is a former JYP trainee, I don't hear it either

Wooyoung of ATEEZ is a former Big Hit trainee, I also hear nothing

Wataru of the Japanese group OCTPATH is a former Hybe trainee and I also hear nothing

I could give a row of more examples but I really don't hear it

  • Well it hardly depends on the singer itself! Sure companies have their singing style( the most prominent is SM singing style), but we don’t know who taught them singing after trainees left the companies! And I don’t think nowadays companies force hard their groups to sing in a particular style( like twice cute nasal chipmunk style), which damages their vocal chords, rather than everybody learns to sing healthy not healthy it doesn’t matter, they just use more of their voice and their own style! But still kpop companies don’t like open forward sound at all! And the use of autotune is ridiculous nowadays, which I hate! Because I can’t distinguish their voices! Especially hybe groups!

Or Babymonster vocal tones seem to as Blackpink vocal tones, since YG wants to create another bp

So I can’t distinguish because it depends on the singer for 70%+ part

  • It's not that easy, but for me, YG's and SME's style are obvious. YG style is, how should I say this, it's like their vocalists and rappers have the same style. It's a forced method. They always have to sound cool, so most of the time they mess up the notes. YG is all about style, not about technique, basically.

On the other hand, SME vocalists are well-rounded, and they sing like in a Musical, it's basically an acting performance as well.

I'm not sure JYP has a style, but they're kinda like the beta version of SME. They sing well enough, but without the acting performance.

HYBE: Well, they're all about dancing, basically.

  • YG vocal are kinda distinct tho. may its the way they trained ??
iirc at yge for monthly eval u cannot sing korean song ?? so its more like rnb

YG japan is kinda different tho coz different trainer ?? iirc they only came to korea like once a year or 3 times a year , i forgot.

IDK what you try to tell me with this, since all people I mentioned trained in Korea (except Wataru from OCTPATH who was under Hybe Japan)
