Nobody even knew that was a thing on melon, so does it really matter?
I think it does for those who use Melon app
think of it as on youtube when you subscribe to some channels then you get notification when new video is out
it's probably same on Melon app
and about the followers number if STAYC recently surpassed 50k then I would say that more impressive numbers are those of NewJeans and IVE
also if anyone is interested in big ones then:
IU - 753k
BTS - 714k
Seventeen - 282k
BigBang - 245k
Red Velvet - 240k
Blackpink - 236k
NCT Dream - 220k
Mamamoo - 207k
TWICE - 196k

Idk but it still feels like another odd metric kpop stans use to compare their faves with others.
I think it works similar to the Spotify followers metric but I don't see anyone caring about it much. It doesn't show how many people are listening to the artist and doesn't affect an artist's charting either.

because it's more about the 'hearts'/likes given for song
for example STAYC's Teddy Bear will soon hit 100k
when Beautiful Monster has just half of that and it shows difference in charting well :)
Dolphin - 204k
Nonstop - 194k
Dun Dun Dance - 166k
but Real Love got just 45k, and it also charted wayyyy worse than previous hits :)

So according to this, Red Velvet is bigger than both Blackpink and Twice. I think that alone should tell us not to put too much weight into Melon follower counts.

this is why I wrote what matter is how many hearts song gets

twice has been steadily losing followers since 2019. i remember they were in the mid 200k range once upon a time
To be fair, basically everyone third gen and older have been loosing followers since a year back at least, IU and BTS included. BTS used to have more followers than IU, then started to drop last year, IU passed them but also started losing followers after that. iirc both had around 790k something followers at their highest.
This trend is likely to do with melon pruning old accounts and losing market share.
