kpop has regressed socially compared to previous gens

  • Rather than becoming more progressive, kpop overall seems to have regressed socially.

less racial diversity - If you can believe, there was more representation from POCs in the past. Now it’s Asians or half-white https://www.kpopstarz.com/amp/…n-k-pop-idol-1996-now.htm

anti-LGBT sentiment - there was a trans idol, Harisu, who was relatively popular and a trans girl group. Nowadays openly gay idol debuts and they get hated by knetizens and ifans

Average idol age decreasing- underage idols always debuted, but not that often. While now it’s almost every group

no activism - even SM and HYBE made some posts related to social justice before. When was the last time they have done one

too much focus on wealth and luxury - economic disparity has increased over the years, yet the excess and richness of idols is celebrated more than ever

destroying the planet - fans used to be happy to move from wasteful albums to digital music. Instead we currently have a mania for bulk buying millions of albums, idols pushing high energy consuming NFTs, and mass streaming on multiple devices just to beat some meaningless records. More like record time to catastrophic climate change

unrealistic standards - soon you won’t be able to tell AI idols from bio idols because of the trend towards extreme use of filters. Literally every idol now is shown with the same unblemished white skin tone. In addition to increased use of plastic surgery and extreme diets with additional photo editing. All for an idealized beauty standard that’s quickly moving away from realistic bodies

  • This happened because "progressiveness" became toxic.you have the fake woke always make up bs scandals etc and try to force their way and image upon everyone and if you don't agree with tthem you are the enemy another IST of sorts it's ridiculous. So people became intolerant of it. It's like you asking if I can share a piece of my pie and i happily obligee, then later you demand more not ask, then say i should always make pie for you as if it was my duty etc. You can see how someone on the receiving end of this can grow fed up with this behavior.

Reason people got annoyed by the LGBT idols isn't because they were gay it's because the few that came out are a gimmick you are not fun or interesting or talented if you make your entire life based on your sexuality and unfortunately Alot of people in the community do this and come off as boring and 1 dimensional. Your entire identity revolves around your sex and nothing is quite boring. This would be like you dating a car guy and obviously you got annoyed because his whole image is his car only thing he talks about has it in a hat his shirt everything is about the car you don't even hear about him himself just him and the car. That's how alot of those lgbt idols come out as. Groups like stray kids BTS onlyoneof exo etc are popular talked about etc because of their talent, skills the personalities and traits of the members nowhere in this is there whole identity and evey word and action they do is im gay or im straight etc sexuality is but a footnote about them something barely mentioned in passing. .

Fans crying about the environment was just bs fake woke shit just hypocrites drumming up bandwagon support for likes and popularity nothing more. It all goes away when they want to feel like success stans and live vicariously through their faves so they will buy all the albums nfts etc just to feel superior 🤡.

Companies care about nothing but money they will shill anything as long as it turns a profit so never trust a company when it's " doing good" for society lol, 😂🤡

  • The regression to me is threefold.

The weirdass obsession with pale skin, it's effing insane, the 2nd gen idols like Hyorin look amazing with tan skin. Just look at Jessie here, she's positively glowing.

Second, the obsession with weight loss. I noticed a trend a year or two ago when skinny idols including several of my faves got even skinnier and it was just mindboggling to me, their proportions were perfect before. The funny thing is some of the older groups actually look great, i'm talking Twice and BP members, they are peaking right now and that's cause they didnt follow this weird trend.

Thirdly, the absolute regression and Victorianification when it comes to male/female interactions. Back in the day, IU literally went up to Taeyang and gave him a kiss on national television. And nobody cared, in fact, everyone seemed to cheer her on, it was played for laughs and cuteness given she had a crush on him. Now imagine if Jennie or Taeyeon or IU or some other It Girl in Kpop did that today to the top male idols like V or JK...the entire Internet would melt down. Like what has happened to common sense and just admitting that idols can be attracted to each other, or even playing it for fun and laughs? Are we regressing to the Victorian era for some insane reason?

  • It’s crazy how big4 companies pay dispatch so their groups don’t get involved in some dating scandals. Some of them are grown. Instead of normalizing dating we are going backwards.

kpop stans are so good at infantilising and then also demonising idols over anything. they're not nearly as open minded and progressive as they claim to be

  • I'll just agree with the irrealistic standards and the focus on luxury and wealth, but isn't that the case for social media overall? with filters and people being pressured to portray a perfect life

  • One note for you: please use comma-symbol, I barly menaged to read most of your text

    A.C.E | ATEEZ | DRIPPIN| MCND | NU'EST | ONF | SF9 | Stray Kids | TFN

  • And every single time it happened, the insane rabid fanbases got completely crazy.

I remember when it first ever came out that she ws with Kai ... because there is a weird obsession going on with Kai and some people talk about him as if he was the hottest man alive, of cause people were going wild when she dated him and later on blamed Dispatch exposing them for why they broke up half a year later ...

The infantilizing is mindboggling, especially when it comes to sex. These fans act like their faves dont even know what sex is or havent entered puberty. Newsflash folks, even back in the Stone Age before the Internet, we ALL KNEW what sex was back in middle school for sure, some of us even in grade school.

i assume it's just pearl-clutching, moral panic stans projecting their own belief systems on their idols. it can't be helped, but it does ruin discussion a lot

  • BP member have always been skinny, they have the body of fashion models.

Twice did have some members with full bodies, specifically Momo and Jihyo, but even Jihyo lost weight.

As someone said above, with the whole thing of trying to be social influences for luxury clothing brands, the pressure to be skinny is going to be even greater.

  • yea it's really weird, in some ways it feels like it progressed but in a lot others it's gotten so much worse

like idol interaction...they have to look like robots at award shows just cuz fans are immature

  • I don't when you become fan of k-pop but to me who has being a fan of k-pop since 2011 barely anything changed within the fan culture or the k-pop companies.

Social justice subjects that you're talking about where used as gimmicks by companies because at that time it was a hot topic.

And concerning the transgender idol she was never accepted by Korean audience the only ones who welcomed her where i-fans and her group never went far.

And for the environment thing companies never cared just take a look at k-pop merch.

And the k-pop standers where always high, every idol used to go on shows and their diet was always brought up i mean how did we get to know about the IU diet, there was this show where SNSD talked about how they maintained their slim legs, also let's not forget how 2ne1 was always called the ugly idol group, and how Suzy was bullied when by netizens for her weigh until she lost it and many more idols who where bashed for their looks.

idols never interacted freely with the opposite sex the only time they interacted was on variety shows but because idols don't go to those shows we don't see them interact anymore, ans speaking of IU she had a huge scandal with Super junior Eunhyuk a photo of them together was posted and both almost lost their career over and Eunhyuk was the one who received the most hate and because of that scandal he stopped appearing in variety shows all together for six years.

And Koreans were always obsessed with pail skin so i don't know what you're talking about

  • yes but

there is nothing inherently wrong with interacting with the opposite gender

anything wrong that does happen is because of moral panic stans

it doesn't have to be this way
