SM to debut three new groups this year, one is a new girl group

  • Literally they stole my idea from the “be SM and make stupid decisions” thread i’m so mad

This is all Yumeku ’s fault

It’s why I made that thread because I had faith in SM’s stupidity but my brain was not enough to predict everything stupid they will come up with so I had to gather more brains to get the vision.

  • they aiming to debut a new girl group even before Naevis? what?

and here I thought Naevis was right around the corner

Naevis will be the SM 2023 year-end surprise.

  • Okay, so I just watched it all, and personally I'm looking forward to it. This is mainly due to the groups that I stan.

My take on it, is that they are moving towards a new structure whereby groups are individually managed by separate teams, away from the current where everything is greenlit and influenced by LSM and Yoo Youngjin etc

This should theoretically lead to more consistent comebacks for every artist, with the caveat that those who are more successful will get more support. So possible RIP to those solo releases that don't do well. But groups like Aespa should be looked after a lot better.

From this system, those that do exceptionally well or have their own in-house production capabilities, they should more autonomy over their own activities and releases. So SM may finally have their own Soyeon or 3Racha type arrangements. Think Giselle or Yeri songwriting for their respective groups, and actually getting their songs released.

They'll also have separate labels/divisions for song publishing and production, and other IPs - like Naevis as a virtual artist. So moving forwards, what they do with Naevis should be independent of Aespa which is a good thing.

In addition to this, they aim to support more diversity with their sound. Meaning that not every group is going to have the SM signature sound.

We should also see more transparent communication from the company moving forwards, which is always a great thing.

All in all, I think it's a good move with lots of potential as they transition away from being a LSM heavily influenced company.

I do think they will run the risk of more flops - whether groups or solo, but they will also have the potential for some of their groups to hit big and sustain that success for longer.

  • if they can come through with their promises then it's exactly the shake-up SM needs to stay ahead

  • You think it’s a great idea ? Lol. Only division 1 is doing a great job. The entire system is terrible.

I think it has the potential to be great. Whether it actually works or not we'll have to see within a few years.

I look at it like the stock market. Diversifying your portfolio generally works the best. The groups which do well will be given the better resources and likely continue to do well over a longer period of time. Those that don't do well will probably be disbanded a lot quicker. Better for the business as a whole, but could be bad for those artists that don't do well and their fans.

For now, being a fan of Aespa and RV primarily, I feel it's a positive.

Either way, it seems like this was all driven from LSM finally leaving, and forging forwards with a new and ambitious plan is better than trying to recreate LSM's magic without him in my opinion.

  • I personally don't think Yeri and Giselle are that talented as someone who listens to both groups with love. In my opinion, the new bands will be those who produce their own compositions. For example, Stray Kids 3 members were producing their own songs and raps. But I guess it's still a good thing in their old bands because they probably have the freedom to choose the concept and genre and type of song they want to do. At least they do what they want in their solos. I think SM was putting pressure on solos too. Sometimes Key and Taemin had to insist on choosing the concept and song they wanted.

I was surprised why SM didn't make a self prodicing group personally Jyp is more cunning than SM at this. Because Stray Kids wasn't that popular at first, but they grew in popularity as they developed and people realized that they were a group that they composed themselves and were closer to a more natural music group. They're definitely more popular than NCT because of that with overseas fans. But Sm persistently imposed the style of his choice. I find NCT members very talented and beautiful but their music is definitely too far for me.

I don't know how good they are at songwriting, but it'll be nice to see them get an opportunity. Even if it's a self composed b-side on an album. Would be cool to see their growth. Unfortunately SM has never supported this so it's hard to know whether they had any talented songwriters in house. Personally I like Giselle's raps that she's written herself.

The article below is actually quite enlightening when it comes to SM's own self production.

The new structure should allow for more input from the idols themselves, as they can apparently be approved within division vs by one executive team for all of SM.

My understanding of the video was that as groups became more successful and matured, they gain more opportunity to be self directed and composed. Upon debut they'd be under the main SM branch within different divisions, then later they could potentially move to an "external" sub-label and take more ownership of their own direction, to the point they can gain shares within the sub-label.

To me this sounds like a fantastic opportunity for real longevity for SM idols. Not just 7 years and you're out. Rather than losing their idols to other companies, they have the chance to almost co-own their own sub-label and still benefit from SM's resources to an extent.

Basing this off what I watched and what I could understand of the translations of course so I may have misunderstood some of it.

  • Some self-composed snippets from SM idols. If they actually nurture their potential, it's only going be a positive. Obviously we don't know what else they have up their sleeve.

Of course, Jonghyun composed a bunch of songs. I'm sure there's more.

It's not limited to debuted idols as well, that's the thing. With the production division it could be from a talented trainee as much as from an international production team.
