Why is it controversial to say BigBang paved the way for BTS when they were named the biggest boy group in the world in 2016?

Well... if I asked some non-fans in my country if they know Big Bang, they would assume that I was talking about the big bang theory or that one TV show.

And they would be more likely to know who BTS is.

So how did BTS introduce kpop and become popular with no help when BigBang, PSY, and even SMTown was selling out concerts across the globe?

Even people who didn't listen to kpop back then knew who BigBang was. They even inspired several members of BTS to become singers. Their impact on BTS is astronomical!

Without them and the others mentioned then BTS would basically be a CD without a CD player.

I honestly did not even know Bigbang was kpop once I heard Fantastic Baby back in days.

Maybe it's just because bts is way bigger and very active unlike yg groups. But yg paved the way for kpop in america and that's why blackpink's break through was much easier.

BTS was the best selling group worldwide in 2018 and the most streamed worldwide in 2020, and they've kept both positions annually ever since.

You can keep hyping BIGBANG, but at no point were they ever the biggest group in the world.

Big Bang still got some dignity in-tact, while BTS sold themselves out for some stupid, meaningless Western award.

BTS helped K-Pop be more mainstream & go on US talk-shows & opened up & leveled up what was thought to be pinnacle of success in US.

BUT what we can say is that BTS inspired them on how to be a group (we all know how BTS admires BIGBANG)

i definitely dont think bts COMPLETELY paved the way. i feel like the discussion really got lost in translation when newer gen fans became part of the community AFTER bts gained their fame.

I think PSY was only helpful for himself yes, but bigbang and gdragon werent completely irrelevant outside of asia at the time. you can even find huge celebrities from back then mentioning them even Justin Beiber. I even heard 2ne1 in a microsoft or something commercial back then and BIGBANGs fantastic baby was like super popular too.

I was quoting someone who said YG paved the way for kpop in america, not worldwide. BIGBANG was monstrous all over east asia. However in America, no they were not relevant here.

But celebrities name-dropping BIGBANG in interviews didn't translate to any large-scale concerts, album sales, or digital sales outside of China, Japan, and Korea. I know because I've checked to see if K-pop truly was international before BTS blew up. It wasn't at all.

Your definition of relevant and mine are clearly different. I count relevance based on stats and if the artist can appear and STAY on mainstream charts.

In a capitalist society where net profit is king, it's indicative of how much money people are willing to spend time streaming and buying music. Kpop was always in low positions on main album sales charts if they were there at all. And they had extremely low longevity; I'm talking 1-2 weeks max before BTS came and had game-changing stability.

There are 4 acts that I think are in that tier of "paving the way": Seo Taiji for being the first archetype of a Kpop group, BIGBANG in China, BoA in Japan, and BTS to literally everywhere else.

Other acts certainly helped (SES, HOT, SNSD, SuJu, TVXQ, KARA, EXO, Twice, BLACKPINK), but the 4 I named fundamentally changed the way Kpop was promoted and sold in at least 1 music markets. And for BTS, it's several markets that they opened the doors to.
