sm’s legacy ended with exo in 2017

  • a bit hard to digest since this company “created kpop” and “paved the way”.

exo was their last group that dominated over every other group in the industry but their reign was cut short by bts blowing up internationally and then subsequently becoming a household name in Korea. red velvet has always been blackpink and twices forgotten triplet. just when nct (sms resident flops) started showing an uncharacteristic massive unflopness during the pandemic era, they got bested by bts, seventeen, (and now) stray kids. aespa had a great 2021 but they soon got buried under a mountain of successful girlgroups that came after them (exhibit A: IVE, Exhibit B: NewJeans)

hybe has bts (no words needed), jyp has stray kids (next bts as their fans like to say), yg has blackpink (biggest gg). but what does sm have other than some supergroups and industry has-beens? i don’t think they’re in possession of a single ‘Top Group’ and they haven’t been for a record five (going on six) years… theyre so outdated and behind it’s a bit embarrassing to see them try ‘new things’ like ncts weird five million members and units or weird aespa AI concept or their cringe ‘super groups’ feeding the sm family agenda. they’re trying so hard to be quirky with that kwangya business but like just stop 😭 maybe focus for once.

imagine stop doing new things because you don't have dominance or a top group. I guess I should stop liking my fav too now.

  • SM is starting a new legacy and I like this one better

They are focusing on their artists long term success and making sure they have a career even in their 40s instead of the old kpop model every other company is still following and every other artist having the expiration date around 25 years old.

They are also the only ones among big agencies who debuted a group of adults in 4th gen.

Whats the point of being around as long as SM if they dont learn from their mistake and dont do better by their artists?

maybe their parents got some SM stocks and their inheritance is in line?

i cant imagine any other reason to worry so much about sm

  • Exo was on top consecutively for years. They are having a good run, and individually, it's the best run. Few non-SM group members get to be as successful as Exo members.

Nct is bigger than you think.

And there's Aespa. Million sellers already with tons of talent and cfs.

If you ask me, SM is still winning. All their groups very active, promoting idols in their 40s, touring and still making bank.

Longevity is the most important thing, however successful idols are, if they can't sustain their careers, all their hard work and sacrifices mean nothing.

  • The newest thing in SM are soloists. Each group ends up with as many successful soloists as possible.

  • Wait...

Red Velvet are million sellers too. Birthday sold a million copies and it's not their most well received comeback.

  • SM never wants a group to be bigger than their brand and that's why they threw EXO in the dungeon when they were still winning daesangs and still easily the 2nd biggest BG, SM wants a lot of really popular groups but LSM/Chris Lee's (his nephew) egos can't take having a monster group like BTS/BP/Twice where their brand gets bigger than the companies. They're probably happy with what they have now.

NCT is really the perfect group for them because it basically is the walking embodiment of the SM brand and SM can just keep plugging in trainees forever and they never have to worry about any individual members wielding power over them.

  • Honestly, I'm not an SM stan but I like several discographies from SM (SHINee, EXO, Red Velvet, SNSD, and a bit of f(x) and NCT).

I think that them not having an overwhelming dominant group is ok for them. All of their groups and soloists can sell reliably these days and tours are doing decently, mainly the NCT units. They're not suffering from lack of funds and probably won't for a long time.

Also NCT Dream is basically the 3rd biggest boy group in Korea as of now.

SM is fine for the time being. HYBE label groups are trendy these days like Big 3 groups in the late 2000s-mid 2010s. Kpop is a revolving door.
