The Definitive 2022 Music Show Win Summary (or: It Really Was IVE's Year)

As many of you may know, I maintain a database of music show wins. Since we're finally done with 2022, I've decided to break down and summarise all the music show wins awarded this year.

Given that there are six music shows a week, there were 313 possible opportunities to award a win. However, music shows are often cancelled, so the actual number of wins given out was only 250.

Let's start simply with a ranking of those 250 wins by artist and by song, as shown in the two charts below:

So first off, the results this year are *quite* different than what we saw in 2021, where BTS and IU absolutely dominated with 28 and 27 wins, respectively. BTS performed acceptably this year, but IU was essentially a non-factor.

The big story is, of course, IVE, who were able to win a whopping 32 times. This represents the second highest number of wins ever collected by a girl group in a single year (behind the 36 wins achieved by S.E.S./Twice in 1999/2017).

(G)I-dle and Blackpink also performed well, as did Le Sserafim and StayC, solidifying 2022 as a girl group sort of year. Even Fromis_9 managed to pleasantly surprise me, so I guess their move to Pledis Entertainment really was beneficial.

Nayeon's solo debut did quite well, but if we're talking about JYPE girl groups, Twice didn't manage a single win this year (this first time that's happened since 2015), nor did Nmixx. Itzy got four wins, but that's still a 50% decrease from their 2021 results.

On the boy group side of things, NCT Dream did quite well for themselves, while Big Bang's long-awaited comeback also performed admirably. The Boyz only managed two wins this year, a far cry from their 10 wins last year.

Artists that received their first ever wins in 2022 consist of the following: Kep1er, Wheein, GOT the Beat, Yena, Viviz, Treasure, Kim Woo-seok, Kim Min-seok, Dreamcatcher (finally!), Miyeon, Le Sserafim, Jo Yuri, Nayeon, WSG Wannabe (GayaG), NewJeans, DKZ, Jin, Verivery, Tempest, and CSR.

Are there any other results in the charts that seem interesting or surprising?

Next, in the chart below, I'll provide a breakdown of this year's 250 music show wins by company:

Obviously, the big winner this year is Starship, which had the vast majority of its wins driven by the success of IVE.

SM also did well thanks largely to the efforts of NCT and Taeyeon, while YG's wins were the result of Blackpink and Big Bang for the most part.

Meanwhile, Cube doubled its wins compared to 2021 almost entirely because of (G)I-dle.

In the charts below, I've categorised each of the 250 wins awarded this year by artist type, and have also provided a breakdown of wins within each artist type:

The big news is that 2022 was the year of girl groups. Girl groups scored 125 wins this year, versus 86 for boy groups, which represents a big change from 2021, where boy group wins outnumbered girl group wins 127 to 66. IVE was, of course, a big contributor to this year's girl group dominance, and was responsible for about a quarter of all girl group wins.

Soloists also fared worse, with 39 wins compared to 64 wins in 2021. Much of this deficit can be attributed to the absence of IU this year.

Lastly, I'll break down 2022's music show wins by generation in the following charts:

By far the most important thing to note here is that this is the first time Fourth Generation artists have come out on top. They achieved 132 wins this year versus 83 wins for the Third Generation. Last year, those numbers were 68 and 141, respectively. Thus, it appears that there's been a "changing of the guard", so to speak, and going forward, I expect the Fourth Generation to continue to excel.

Within the Fourth Generation, we should also note that it's girl groups who are dominating. They claimed 98 of the 132 total wins, or 74.2%, and I expect that trend to carry on.

Indeed. IVE had a great year, so it'll be interesting to see how well they fare in 2023 given their new competition.

Oh yeah, they were definitely leading for the Third Generation this year. Now do keep in mind that SBS M's The Show is the only music program that currently requires attendance in order to be considered for a win.

Fair point. That's definitely the case with Show Champion, where they'll simply award you points for showing up and performing.

For the other shows, it's not as clear. Their broadcast points don't appear to be tied to the actual music show itself, but instead relate to the number of times a song is played on Mnet/KBS/MBC/SBS. Now with Music Bank, there are additional points awarded for appearing on other KBS programs, not Music Bank itself.
