Well... there is an annual nerdy convention in my country with anime stuff, Disney stuff, video game stuff etc... and it also includes kpop.

Where I'm at? Absolutely yes. And there is no special carve out for BTS or any other group, as in "well kpop is nerdy except for them." Responding to comments like this one:

Thinking about this some more... I think sometimes people don't quite understand just how large the United States is. Just because kpop (all of it) would be perceived as nerdy in my city/state (and likely my broader state... I live in the most liberal part of my state) that doesn't mean that people living in Chicago or LA or hell, rural Arkansas would have the same general perspective.

but that's true though, at their peak BTS were just the currently popular boygroup, many of the younger students here liked them. Similar to when 1D was big (although 1D were bigger in my country in their heyday). Whereas Kpop as a hobby is definitely a niche/nerd thing, with the older students especially. Usually the same students who like Anime, etc. Nothing wrong with that, I like it too but it's true that BTS existed outside that niche for a while.

K-pop is still niche here no matter what way you look at it. Being a niche isn’t a bad thing, but I wouldn’t call K-pop “mainstream”

I don't think it is nerdy if you only listen to kpop, but if you watch random variety content by your faves it definitely is.

yeah pretty much everywhere at least here in brazil.. if u like kpop ppl automatically assume u have shit taste and is a nerd, bts included.

The more dedicated a fandom is, the more nerdier they are. So BTS should be included 1st in the list.

Kpop is pretty popular in my country...I don't think it's considered being a nerd here..
If they found out you like BTS, their first response tho would be to call them gay...

I usually equate nerdy with sci-fi or anime. Where I live (Philadelphia), kpop doesn't seem to be considered nerdy. It's just another interest that people have. A dance club here has regular kpop nights each month where they just play kpop. There are also well attended cup sleeve events and other meetups. So I think it's kinda normalized where I live, or at least not considered nerdy or weird.

Yeah, it could be. Everyone knows what KPOP is in my area but there are only a few fans that I know of around here. I do know that there are some in my school and I've met them but I'm always too shy to talk about it to them and I don't really know why.

In a sense, it's almost equivalent to someone liking anime or video game characters but at the same time, it's not viewed as weird in a way. It's just rare.
