RE: Do you think rookie boy groups deserve to flop so much this year?

  • Some group like Tempest even delivered one of the best music this year. But paid dust.

Only dissappointment being psy's group for me, considering their performances on Loud and considering it's Psy's group at least I thought they would stand out musically but its usual noisy bg again. Boygroups please just leave the noisy music to the ones who can do it in the right way ;( .

Tempest makes ver fresh music and yet are paid dust :S

Lol I'm curious about how you guys like Tempest, I found their debut to be completely mediocre and their comeback forgettable. I don't really like how they are one of the most successful BGs in 4th gen, cause in my opinion their concept is the most boring and even kinda obnoxious (Dan dadadadan dan da dadada dan dan dadadaran, can't stop won't stop shining, basically the entirety of Bad News).

I mean, I can see how they would seem different and refreshing because their songs have melodic and singable choruses (opposite of the music-less choruses that annoy people), and their concepts are happy and realistic rather than dark or fantastic (kinda like how people think of Weeekly, the exact opposite of concepts that have gotten tiring). But idk even if they check those boxes, ultimately I just find their songs really middling (and even annoying, as I just explained)

  • Please stream my flop faves

Ngl, I thought their first song was awful, so I was really pleasantly surprised by this song when I was watching a music show for someone else. Then I checked out their mini, which was really good.

I think they did them a disservice with their lead single because a lot of people like me wrote them off and never checked back. If I hadn’t seen them on the music show, I never would have bothered.

It's because people whine about boy groups making noisy music, but what they really mean is they want a Big 3 group to do that kind of music so they can have the success that goes along with it. It's why Astro and Pentagon are treated the same way.

I am not even fan of bright cute concept but I loved both Bad News and "Can't Stop Shining". Especially Can't Stop Shining, it was just very straightforward and smooth. And I am already obsessed with Hwarang's rap parts.

To be honest I was surprised their music not getting more attention because people have been demanding bright fun boygroup.

As for the success, they have Hanbin who was popular I-Land trainee, he is genuinely good person and has been through a lot to debut he deserves all the success he has.

  • I’m firmly of the belief people don’t actually want bright music, they just want to find a reason to complain. Because there are groups that are constantly putting that stuff out and no one gives a shit (Astro, Treasure, Pentagon). There’s a similar parallel with gg where people complain about no cute concepts then pay absolutely no attention to the groups who do them.

Several of the most streamed songs of NCT Dream, which has a pretty bright overall discography, are “noisier” ones (Hot Sauce and Ridin. Depending on the chart, Melon or Spotify, they are the top song or second and third highest.)

My two cents on nugu bgs: I love to explore new music but I find a lot of the nugu bgs have a sameness: there’s either the NCT-SKZ lite style often executed by less skilled rappers and singers, middling production or overly auto tuned production OR a bland bright concept with no other concept than it’s bright and the thin, higher vocals I don’t like. I intensely dislike a high, thin male vocal altho it’s favored a lot in brighter bg concepts.

Like here on SF9, another group doing bright concepts that no one talks about, they are using this higher thinner tenor BUT there are vocalists with richer tones that make it work.

These are both bright songs but the vocals are rich.

In contrast for me, this just feels thin and weak, as well as kinda generic:

I get that many groups are new and have to iron out their sound and style, but they often blur together. If I think about gg, I think Pixy’s first few minis don’t quite work. The song production isn’t there and I was like “hmm” but I did think there was something interesting there and something I kept checking in on as they progressed as a group. Similarly, BVNDIT has a sound that’s different than, say, Cherry Bullet.

I liked TO1 when I saw them at KCON and I added Drummin’ to my playlist. But Ngl, if I heard that song and you told me it was Seventeen or SF9 or Treasure or Cravity, I’d believe you because there just isn’t anything distinctive or specific there.

As to copying established groups, that’s a dicey chance you’re taking because then people are comparing you in their head, even if they don’t stan the group, the way we all compare covers mentally when we hear them.

You answered your own question lol.

I don't really have anything deep and complex. I find their songs fun and their energy kind of infectious. Different strokes for different folks aye.

  • Their companies are clearly not investing in their music identity at all. They usually want quick clicks and just copy what's popular boygroups are doing at the moment. Maybe they are already overwhelmed by this saturated market and afraid of taking risks. Also, it seems like these creative directors or music producers prefer to work with girlgroups and avoid boygroups? Like we have BEP working with Stayc, MHJ working with Nwjs, Jaden Jeong worked with Loona and now working on new gg TripleS. But no one for boygroups. And even interesting is even when they literally lives under one roof but Psy still not producing for TNX and Brave Brothers not producing for DKB. But they both have like countless hits with other artists or for girlgroups.

  • I don't think any group deserves to flop just I don't think any group deserves to succeed either...

most kpop groups work hard but everyone knows hard work alone doesn't guarantee success

sometimes it comes down to luck...some groups will succeed and other groups won't - such is life
