Honestly I don't know... I was into anime and Japanese music in the early 2000s so I was familiar with both male and female j-pop groups. Super Junior was the first k-pop group I saw back around their debut so I guess boy groups.

Because my mom had maaaad slander against kpop in general
I thought it was night club pole dancing before I looked into it.

It was neutral for me. It just so happened that girl groups had songs that either emotionally or physically connected more often than guy groups.

Mmmmmm.....I knew about "kpop" before I heard the term "kpop"
I'm Asian so I grew up with BigBang and SNSD and "kpop" was always just Asian music that was in Korean to me.It wasn't until 3rd gen that I heard the term "kpop" and I was thinking wow Korean pop is a thing now lol
But at that time I was thinking girl group, specifically SNSD

So I always think of girl groups.

I never heard of Kpop before I got into Kpop so had no preconceived notions about it at all.
When I initially did get into it though I didn’t really associate it with bgs or ggs, it was just pop groups. I grew up with British and some American groups and both sexes were common place so the same applied to kpop for me.

Speaking of BTS...they were like the only Korean group I knew at the time lmao because that's all I would hear about. And so I was watching some YouTuber I liked reacting to KPOP and they showed GOT7 Just Right and my first thought was like "iS tHaT BtS???"
I mean...7 members...Korean boy group...
Now I realize that not every boy group is BTS

Haha, I think what it was is that I knew about BTS around the time they had the bright concepts and bright videos. (i.e. DNA, IDOL, Boy with Luv...) so I thought of them as being really bright dancers.
So, for me to think that GOT7 was BTS in that music video is kind of an understatement. It would be worse if I said a bg like TXT was BTS lmao
But I know what you mean...
