What is a digipack and why some kppopies call it cheating?

QuoteA digipak is the same form and size as a standard CD Jewel Case, however it is made mostly from environmentally friendly board. The difference with a digipak is that the CD wallet/jacket has a plastic tray which the disc snaps into – overall it is a sturdier product.
The history of the digipak goes back to 1974, when Dutch electronics company Philips began developing a digital optical audio disk with an error correction code.
50 years later, these disks are a core part of 21st century life. Digipak CD packaging contains an outer shell made from a type of custom cardboard. Within it, lies one or more plastic trays able to hold a CD.
Basically it's similar to a jewel case (which is your typical squareish clear plastic CD case) in that it's a smaller, cheaper album, but with the ability to include more in the case than a jewel case because of the way it's packaged.
There are photos at that website if you want to get a better idea.

Digipack sounds like some flop boy group name.

The reason for latest K-pop sales boom 👀

ig it's cheating because they're very very cheap. like 7-10 dolla compared to a regular kpop album that's like 25-40 dolla
-
at first I thought that jewel case was something that had a literal jewel on it.
Turns out it just a '80s-'90s cd case -

Yea, this is the thing that they said about "digipack is cheating"

thank you for this i literally thought it was some digital thing and we got the music digitally and like pc's or something sent to us, i hadn't had time to look up what exactly it was and this helped so now i know it's not a waste of money lol

Where do you shop?
'cause SF9's comeback album is $20.99 per version (2 versions) - Going through makestar i Paid $58.58 for both versions
Ateez is $22.99 per version (3 versions) - Through makestar i paid $85 for all 3 after shipping
Huta's is $23.99 - Through Hello82 who's slower than shit I paid $28.26
P1Harmony is $20.99 per version (2 versions)
Omega x - $24.99 per version (2 versions) Through makestar I paid - $62.47 for both versions
Not to pention i paid about $85 for all 6 versions of SF9's jewel case
$81 through CD Japan for Omega x's upcoming Japan Album BOTH versions
So please tell me how albums don't even cost $20....
I am asking 'cause i shop at various sites both American and Korean and nothing is that cheap...unless it's on sale/markdown etc. I can compare 4-5 american sites between each other and not much of a price difference. I use Makestar for the P.O. Benefits

Oh I use Ktown4u as reference, not counting shipping... I guess on American sites they must be more expensive?

Those are the prices that's the cheapest in the american stores not including shipping the makestar price is of course higher 'cause it's international but sometimes i pay just a bit more there than an american store and i get better pre-order benefits. If you don't have to worry about international pricing then yes it's probably cheaper but for us american's those are pretty average prices for albums.

I get it, I just used dollars as a measure cause I think it's what most people use a currency here but I'm not american so I can't tell about that lol.
So are digipacks and cheaper versions overall also slightly more expensive? Like do you pay more than 10$ for one of those?
-
yeah like i posted a few posts ago about the difference with P1harmony's like their digipack looks to be almost $14 and their regular album is nearly $23 it's like a $9 difference but collectors are gonna pay it 'cause of the inclusions, which appears different than the main album itself. So that's how these companies get you it may be cheaper but the collectors are gonna buy them for the inclusions.

Damn that's crazy, american fans sure have to spend to support their faves...

Albums cost more in the US.
For example, Twice Korean albums average about $20 to $30 each. Japanese album is about $45 to $60

god if you only knew. my go to secret is japan mercari...i can find shit for dirt cheap there, the shipping isn't too bad either. I've completed all of my sf9, up10tion, ateez, and in2it collection just from there plus some. I buy japanese albums through cdjapan because it's usually cheapest and then i cycle between 3 american stores and makestar for kpop albums. I usually buy the groups i collect for and resell whatever inclusions i get htat i don't want on our u.s. mercari which nothing is selling right now i have so much shit it's not even funny lol i could open my own damn store

Yes, hehe. In their real-time counting chart.
Though Hanteo adds all numbers, whatever version, in their daily/weekly/monthly/yearly charts.

so they don't have a problem adding digipacks into their numbers right?

Yes. An album is an album.

Regular kpop albums prices are not that though. At least it is not the average price not even in 2020. Average has been 15-17 dollars for couple of years. Now it’s cheaper and you can find groups selling regular 7-10 dollar album right now. No need for it to be digipak. Plus most of the groups that sell digipaks also sell 25-40 dollar versions as well.

Yes. An album is an album.
So they don't have a problem with it, its not cheating when they don't have a problem with it
