people made up groundless rumours about SM launching a hotel business where the AIs would provide sexual services to fans and many believed and ran with it. There were threads and posts in the pre-revamp forum comparing Aespa's concept to prostitution. I don't see how the initial announcement of Aespa's concept would explain reaching such nasty and malicious conclusions.
Let's not downsize the responsibility of those people by implying it was all planned by SM for whatever reason.

while SM overstated AIs stuff, they did not implied anything sexual. That was the derivative of bunch of nasty users here, lets not give them a pass.

At the end of the day it's free marketing and SM has constantly showed they don't care that much about receiving hate, pretty sure they overstated it's importance to make people have knowledge about the group and it's concept so they would not get labeled as a "Blackpink's 2.0" for their number of members since the start. It makes them different from the get go even if the impact of IA it's exaggerated, it also makes many people who was worried about it be now like "it's not that bad actually"
well to be honest SM just announce that Aespa will be a new type of gg compose of AI and real member
and they expand in multiple area, much more than what the other kpop group tried
they didn't exaggerate anything, it's just people who once they see something they are used to it, start to make tons of hypothetical things who can happen and start to create rumor, fake narrative, and blow up this thing
and at the end you end up with a message completely twist, compare to the initial statement

basically the typical way kpop fans react, take the smallest things, twist it in every way possible, lost the meaning of the initial message, so they can then act offeded

because if you watch aespa christmas video at the end they are doing a Q&A, they used the AE to act like they are communicating with them , and they are the one asking the question
SMCU is the perfect example of SM use of the AE in aespa storytelling
My karina video too is a great example of the use of the AE to explain how AE/human connection work
sure MY expected SM to go further into the AE concept
but the AE use goes way beyond just the 20 second in their MV
we already saw the AE appear more in Savage than they did in BM and Next level
you can notice that each era show more of the AE, i guess it's a way for SM to make people warm up to the AE, and slowly let them take a bigger part in Aespa MV

I remember this all too well.
But when these wild theories were disproven over time, it was crickets. Nobody acknowledged they were wrong about their speculations.
I get it. It's one thing to be concerned, but sensationalizing it doesn't help anyone. It's not too far off from what the West often does to K-pop — assuming all companies are the same, all people involved in the industry are the same, all idols are just robots, groups don't have a single ounce of creative input, etc.
They hear the word "hotel" and jump to the worst conclusion. Hotels are places to eat, relax, and sleep...
It's for hype. It's something that sets them apart from other groups.
It's not overwhelming, but it's a nice little easter egg when it comes to their promotions.
Once this stuff starts to kick off, they can always say they were the first. If it never does, then it's just a cute little part of their lore and concept.
