Why is Treasure’s Hanteo sales so much lower than their reported sales?

  • YG reports Treasure sells 700,000 copies but on Hanteo it’s only 230,000. Can you explain to me why the difference is so huge. I remember the when Enhypen reports they have 900,000 preorders the Hanteo numbers reflect that right away. I understand Hanteo may take time to count but then why does YG have to announce right away why not wait for official numbers?

  • I believe YG's pertaining to album shipments, which are considered sold already.

And in case you forgot, Hanteo only counts sales from Hanteo-affiliated stores.

There's a delay in shipments too. Some orders will only be shipped by next week due to courier strikes in SK and Winter olympics too.

  • those sales need to come from japan or us to make for it (they need to chart like txt/enhypen/aespa/twice on bb200)

BUT their sales normally don't work that way so people need to wait for gaon

they should have at last 500k in hanteo to go by their usual rate or the other yg artist rate (aespa had 400k in hanteo for example)

  • I'm looking at Hanteo thru WhosFan and it seems the Hanteo chart numbers are for The Second Step: Chapter One's two photobook versions. The sales included on the chart does not seem to include the digipacks or kit albums.

  • Then why don’t YG wait for the number then report? I didn’t see Hybe reporting Enhypen sales themselves they just wait for the Hanteo numbers.

YG is in a unique position because they are majority stakeholders in YGPlus.

YGPlus is one of Korea's largest distributors of music. Of course YG would know the numbers.

YGPlus distributes digital/physical music and merch for a long list of labels.

YGPlus has released numbers for TXT before, as well as others. Hybe wouldn't release those numbers because they aren't the distributors of their music. YGPlus is.

  • I'm more raising my eyebrows at the "20% from the US" crap bc am I seriously meant to believe US treasure fans (no idea what they're called) bought 150k albums? more than any non-BTS group, including Blackpink, despite not backing up this supposed popularity on any other metric? come on YG.

  • Let’s just wait YG is off, Lalisa sold 950k according to YG but we are stuck with 820k

If they don't chart on BB200 in the coming weeks then...

It doesn't necessarily mean the albums are bought IN the U.S. Probably just bought and SHIPPED to the U.S. (the buyer is from the U.S.).

pretty much still weird media play in that case though, why specificy 20% shipped to the US if your actual US sales are gonna be faaaaar lower than that (I mean we know why but it's kinda dumb and setting them up)

YG has always been reporting TREASURE's sales since debut with those ratios. We were shocked too with that U.S. percentage. :pepe-joy:

Anyways, YG's just doing their thing as always. Let's just wait for Gaon numbers. :pepepizza:

  • It's not mediaplay when you're stating facts. Lol. YG always announced the breakdown among Korea, Japan, SEA and the US on previous albums. The MV trended/still trending in the areas mentioned.

The percentages were similar. There's a couple of big TREASURE fanbases in the US that have always done big group orders.

TREASURE had the largest preorder among 4th gen on Ktown, which is a popular outlet for the US. And the quick MV views.

So there are objective measures that point to the numbers.

I'm glad a few posters were able to educate the OP how album sales work.

  • Trending on YouTube = selling well now????

the thing is that they don’t have an US distribution so how they can sell 140k groups like NCT, TXT which have a big fanbase are not doing it in a month. How can treasure which barely make noise in US sell that much.

I do think they have a big fanbase in SEA and Asia but the ratio in the US seems clearly inflated.

Also KTOWN4U is mostly bought by c-fans not us fans

For everyone else this is the strike kpopace26 is referring to:

Idk how much it affects current album sales numbers and distribution though. CJ is the parent company of Mnet. Treasure making JIKJIN's music show debut on M Countdown. They usually do Inkigayo as their first music show during a promotional cycle. Will Jihoon have his MC contract renewed another year? Oh noes...I'm sliding down a slippery slope.

  • With the "20% sales from the u.s" they better reach 1 on bb200 or the amount of the threads we will be getting about it... I'm praying for u treasure fans

If YG is right they might be number 1 on Billboard 200 album chart next week right? They're claiming around 140k from the US since last weeks number 1 and the week before had lower sales than that number.

I think to chart on billboard, album must be officially distributed by a US label or something and Treasure albums are not for now.

  • I think to chart on billboard, album must be officially distributed by a US label or something and Treasure albums are not for now.

Artists don't need to be signed to us label, albums just have to be sold/shipped... as long as there is demand and you sell enough to make the top 200. BP did it in june 2018 before signing with interscope.

I'm gonna guess yg are counting ktown4u and some other store as 100% american sales. Or maybe treasure genuinely sold a lot in the u.s, who knows :wellr:

  • Is their album being distributed on US Stores (Target, B&N, Walmart, Amazon etc)?

If not, then It's unlike they will debut on Billboard or chart high and these numbers are probably shipping based on imported sales from US fans in korean stores. If It's the case, no one will be able to prove or disprove what was reported, since only YG has access to this.

It won't happen, the albums sold in the US are from fans ordering from ktown4u and other importing stores, it won't be counted in Billboard.

They are not, that's why I said that earlier.
Billboard charting won't happen until YG decide to really sell Treasure albums in US.
