BoA and Karina were certainly not thinking about race. It's colorist for sure, but not racist. Whoever translated this with the subtitles intentionally put the word "black" in there for a reason — to race-bait and get their video viral. Don't fall for that divisiveness; we have way too much of that. BoA meant "dark" or "tan."

It's one of those things that need to be examined responsibly, not messed around with for the sake of dividing people, click-baiting, and race-baiting. Resorting to the latter just feeds people misinformation and causes a whole lot of unnecessary resentment.

if someone said Nako's first impression was her extremely short height, would people call it heightist? I doubt it. Yet it's just as much of a unique genetic trait of hers as Hyoyeon's tan skin is/was.

but the fact that op only mentioned karina and not that boa was the main problem here, it stinks. the way this video was edited and made karina laugh zoom so loudly, when that is literally hyoyeon's voice. she didn't make any noise except "ha" after what boa said, so where's that loud and hard laugh? i mean, she did wrong but they attributed shit to her that she didn't do. people act like she said it and then laughed hard about it. it literally looks like this. like.,. why. clapping with a blank smile on her face, hyo and karina's gaze at the staff member and boa in it all. it was so awkward, I was literally frozen for a sec.

I get what you mean, but I think it's the laughter that's giving viewers a bad impression.
What I'm trying to say is...
K-pop is extremely global now. Due to our different upbringings around the world, our minds take what we know from previous experiences and assign that to new content that we're exposed to. For people unfamiliar with Asian culture, they'll instinctively see it as racism because that's the concept they're familiar with when they think of skin color. For people familiar with Asian culture, they'll know this has all to do with colorism, not racism. Race isn't even a subconscious thought when Asians tease each other's skin tone.
What's most disappointing about all of this is that whoever made this TikTok video clearly added the word "black" to race-bait, not caring at all about the repercussions.
I've always believed K-pop could be a great way to bring different cultures around the world together and help us learn more about each other in a positive, uplifting way. To see that it's being used for so much race-baiting is extremely upsetting. You've probably seen how these issues are used for the sake of fanwars; that's one of the most disgraceful parts.

this kind of talk is very normal in SK, you can't expect idols to not say stuff like this as they live in a country when everybody thinks this way....not saying it is okay , many thinks need to change in SK

These casual remarks are very common and normalized in a lot of Asian countries at least. These are colorists remarks though but they are so ingrained in our daily habits that it is not seen as anything offensive however it may affect the person on the receiving end or let's say any person who heard this and does not meet those beauty standards. It's a huge issue here.
I don't think it should be 'villianised' a lot like antis will do nor should it be excused like fans will do. Maybe try to be more understanding instead of either extremes.
Idols really be forgetting what they looked like before their companies made them shave their Jaws into dorito chins, mutilate their noses and inject them full of glutathione. Its honestly ridiculous how they use having tan skin as an insult when the majority of Koreans have tan skin and all the idols look so much better with their natural skin tones rather than the white powder they cake on to look casket ready. it is not even that, like Boa literally didn't say anything negative, demeaning or mocking? there were incidences where idols mocked someone's dark skin or used derogatory terms to call them just because of their skin tone, but all what Boa said here is "you're tanned/dark skinned"? like, where is the joke or insult exactly?

Colorism in Korea is not the same as colorism in the west. It’s not rooted in racism and therefore they don’t see it as a problem to make jokes like this. It is still an issue, but addressing it as if it was a racism issue will lead to nowhere cause they are not doing it out of racism. That’s why the debate between inetz and knetz often lead to resentment.
Also it feels like this situation was taking out of context. Not just that, why is the focus on Karina when it was Boa who made the joke ?
