Karina laughs at BoA's colorist joke about Hyoyeon's skin color

  • BoA who has been active in the kpop industry for god knows how long still think it's ok to make colorist jokes in this day and age. Karina found it hilarious smh

  • everyone understands this if they're atleast average IQ

the people getting mad WANT to get mad at everything

is pretty normal that in your first meeting with someone, the thing you'll notice the most is their most unique physical trait

  • thing is, i dont know Boa at all, but in this clip there's no context behind their laughter

there's just a question and a straightforward answer

BoA could be the most colorist person in the world but this clip is no proof of it at all

if someone said Nako's first impression was her extremely short height, would people call it heightist? I doubt it. Yet it's just as much of a unique genetic trait of hers as Hyoyeon's tan skin is/was.

  • it was not needed honestly. waiting for an apology or something. because really.

but the fact that op only mentioned karina and not that boa was the main problem here, it stinks. the way this video was edited and made karina laugh zoom so loudly, when that is literally hyoyeon's voice. she didn't make any noise except "ha" after what boa said, so where's that loud and hard laugh? i mean, she did wrong but they attributed shit to her that she didn't do. people act like she said it and then laughed hard about it. it literally looks like this. like.,. why. clapping with a blank smile on her face, hyo and karina's gaze at the staff member and boa in it all. it was so awkward, I was literally frozen for a sec.

also someone knows something about it?

  • so basically when they first met BoA thought that Hyoyeon had tanned skin/darker skin

    and people think it's bad?

isn't it a normal thing that will caught your eye when you live in society where everyone and their mom wants to be fair/pale?

  • this kind of talk is very normal in SK, you can't expect idols to not say stuff like this as they live in a country when everybody thinks this way....not saying it is okay , many thinks need to change in SK

but you can't look at the issue fromthe western perspective, it's very different

and about Karina ...it's her big big sunbae joking, ofc she would laugh, even Hyo is laughing so Karina would naturally too

there is still long way to go but anyway perspective is very important

  • Not this tik tok adding the word " black " to make this remark become controversial, even SM in their subtitle used the word tan and not black, this tiktok user intention is so obvious

she used the word tan , not dark ....., people can be tan just by being expose to sun there's nothing wrong with this

and Hyoyeon already said in the past that she was very tan in the past because she was a tomboy who used to spend all her time out, dancing and playing

you're all so obsess in turning everything into a controversy damn '-'

  • Are ppl really blaming Karina like wtf? If they watch the whole video she wasn't even laughing loudly, that wasn't even her voice. Ppl really just want to hate on her smh.

  • These casual remarks are very common and normalized in a lot of Asian countries at least. These are colorists remarks though but they are so ingrained in our daily habits that it is not seen as anything offensive however it may affect the person on the receiving end or let's say any person who heard this and does not meet those beauty standards. It's a huge issue here.

I don't think it should be 'villianised' a lot like antis will do nor should it be excused like fans will do. Maybe try to be more understanding instead of either extremes.

  • Idols really be forgetting what they looked like before their companies made them shave their Jaws into dorito chins, mutilate their noses and inject them full of glutathione. Its honestly ridiculous how they use having tan skin as an insult when the majority of Koreans have tan skin and all the idols look so much better with their natural skin tones rather than the white powder they cake on to look casket ready. Jeez.

  • Some people here just need to accept that Asians hold white skin as their standard of beauty 🤷🏻‍♀️

it is not even that, like Boa literally didn't say anything negative, demeaning or mocking? there were incidences where idols mocked someone's dark skin or used derogatory terms to call them just because of their skin tone, but all what Boa said here is "you're tanned/dark skinned"? like, where is the joke or insult exactly?

  • Colorism in Korea is not the same as colorism in the west. It’s not rooted in racism and therefore they don’t see it as a problem to make jokes like this. It is still an issue, but addressing it as if it was a racism issue will lead to nowhere cause they are not doing it out of racism. That’s why the debate between inetz and knetz often lead to resentment.

Also it feels like this situation was taking out of context. Not just that, why is the focus on Karina when it was Boa who made the joke ?

  • why are you all more focused on karina laughing than boa making the colorist joke? Yeah, karina isn't right for laughing but she isn't the main problem here. Boa is pushing 50 and still doesn't know better than to make those lame unfunny jokes

is this supposed to be funny? it's 2022 and you are ageist. grow up and stop embarrassing yourself. you should know better too.

  • The title isn't emphasising Karina laughing over Boa telling the joke. She is helping to reinforce the colorist culture by laughing at the joke. The title isn't saying she's worse than Boa. It illustrates that the problem doesn't lie with just one person.

  • BoA said "까맣게 탔다" which means burnt black (like being burnt black in a fire, or when you burn meat you cooked or a cake you baked; 까맣다 is a verb and it means to be black (as in color black)), but it's also used as an expression that delivers the meaning of "getting a tan" after being in the sun for a long time, or after coming back from a beach vacation.

Just providing some context here (I'm not a native speaker but I have intermediate knowledge of Korean)
