IU really is amazing, she now has four new songs in Melon top 10 and next one is... charting at 11
-
-
Fans have been asking her for unreleased songs and an acoustic album for years, she fulfilled both wishes at once
-
-
only at 440k ULs peak.
flopped so hard

watch her get PAK with this unreleased song

There wasn't even a press release for "winter sleep", no teasers, no MV. She's charting her entire album in the top 11 on melon. since you're not that impressed with iu's charting performance, I hope she comes back on the same day as yr favs next time easy competition for yr favs, I'm sure.
-
Yeah, I agree with this. They should really start including YT as well

So?
Barely announced, no proper teasers, no MV. Not all releases are made to chart.

Pieces is not a comeback, just only 5 unreleased songs without promo and no mvs, after chart repair only IU and BEO managed to pass 400K+ ULs

it's better not to derail this thread, as a longtime IU fan every year I see people excited thinking that IU's about to decline. I'm going to become a granny waiting at this point

what has that got to do with me saying that her album was good
-
These songs, are the ones she didn't include in her earlier albums, EPs most probably because she thought they wouldn't be the type appreciated by the public.
The EP is more to her fans who knew these songs and wanted a release.
So a simple acoustic release, no fanfare.
I thought they would chart decently, but not like Lilac album.
But...
-
Pretty sure the charts were invented for IU to chart on them. And not the other way around :D
Well, she used to be owned by the company which owns Melon
-
I'm actually curious when she will be topped? I'm guessing when she releases her next album :P
-
-
Well, she used to be owned by the company which owns Melon
please rephrase that, it sounds weird

Loen owned Melon
Loen owned Loen Entertainment, which owned IU
So Melon kind of owned IU
All of them were purchased by Kakao, and after many name changes, Kakao owns Melon
Kakao also owns 40% of Edam Entertainment, IU's company. (the other 60% is owned by IU through proxies.)

Yes I know, but saying somebody is owned means slavery.
Which is kinda weird innit?

Its doing about what i expected from a release like this, maybe abit lower ul for the title than one could expect in the first day, but UL's and streams are down alot since just a week ago. I don't think it will stay ontop for long tho, but remains to be seen..

Thats true, a normal comeback from IU would peak at around 800k (well, less now between christmas and new year when uls/streams are down).
But this is a compilation of roughly 10 years of b-sides that didnt make the cut for any of her regular albums, all which there are numerous live clips of online. The only reason for this release is because fans kept begging her to release them and she wanted to clean house before she turns 30 tomorrow. A week ago none even suspected this was coming, and the promotion has basically consisted of 2-3 twittter/instagram posts.
You are right, the perfomance here is nothing special for IU. But in the end it just further highlights the vast gap to everyone else doesnt it? Even tho its an EP of previously rejected b-sides, all in similar style, all heard before, no promtion, no mv, no physical release, all songs are in the top 5/15 on the charts and its the fourth fastest songs to reach RAK this year (1-3 being IUs previous releases this year).
For almost(1-2 exceptions) any other act this would be unimaginable, even with full comeback with millions of dollar spent on mvs and promtions its something they could only dream of. Yet here IU does it by simply cleaning out her closet and getting ready for the new year.

All true, still I didn't expect b-side rejects to do so well.
I am starting to wonder if Uaenas are underestimated as a fandom.
They may not get to crazy antics and social media nasty battles, but what matters is the charts.
And that fandom is not that of mass streaming, but of ULs.
B-side reject getting 400k+ ULs?
Even if not candidates for longevity, is still impressive.

As long as that condition continues, all acts have to watch their backs.

An important reason for IU's success is that, most of her songs not only tell a story, but there is a story behind them as well, which conveys an authenticity, other artists aren't able to convey, even if their songs themselves are great.
Even other songwriting singers, don't have both the aspects - story behind the song and story by the song.
So even if the song itself is not musically that great, people will find empathy with either story or both.
