BTS aren't releasing their best stuff at the moment, so that's a good sign for K-pop.

I doubt any korean act will ever come close to what BTS has done and where they stand today in the world. Just like i doubt we will ever see a soloist reach the same level as IU has in korea. The stars pretty much aligned just right for them both.

I do think Kpop will continue to grow or at least not shrink much in the coming years, but it will be splintered between more acts in the future, and not hard carried by 2-3 groups.

Very honest question from someone who is not really into idol music. Are all music awards in s. korea idol-music centric? I did a fast research for previous years for MMA and even the folk, rock, rnb etc winners they had over the years do not really stray away from idol artists. Where are the alternative bands and rock bands, or the real folk musicians or projects, or genuine electronic music artists? Is there no music scenes outside idol music that reach the mainstream or is it just the awards set up to give awards only to idol projects and their companies? The same for Asian Artists awards (who are not really asian but korean?), and MAMA?

Are there any other awards that include more music scenes, like actual rock music, actual rnb or soul or funk or electronic music etc?

Those people talk about here are mostly idol focused more or less, MAMA and MMa being the biggest. MAMA's criterias basically exclude most non idols. MMA is less so as its based on melon chart data (the biggest service in sokor), but only up to 60%, the rest is fanvotes and jury votes, which tend to go to idols usually.

GDA (Golden disc award) also tends mostly to idols, exception being their soty award thats based on the domestic gaon chart only (altough how they calculate it is a bit flawed to say the least). SMA is the same i think, but with a few genre specific awards.

KMA (korean music award) is probably the most prestigous and all their awards are based on jury votes only. Even tho one can consider it somewhat of a snob award show like some western awards when it comes to music, its by far the most diverse, and you wont find many idols among its recipients.

Gaon music awards is the only award that i think is truly transparent, because at least their soty's awards (for each calendar month) are based on chart data that cover most of the major music services in south korea, no fanvotes/jury involved. Here one can see som spread in the artists/genres awarded because of this.

That said i think the music scene in korea is very poor in general. What you mostly find on the charts are basically pop, hiphop/rap and osts/ballads with a few exceptions. Its slowly getting better but its a far cry from say japan which is miles and miles ahead when it comes to diversity and genres.

What you are looking for is the KMAs also known as the Korean Grammy. They award indie artistes and a lot more acts. But kpop stans on this forum don’t like bringing them up because idol music barely gets nominated in big categories.

BTS is the most nominated group and most awarded daesang act at this award show even though they are an idol group.

Last year only BTS and OhMyGirl groups got nominated for the show

BTS is dominant among Kpop, yes.

But does thar translate to Kpop including BTS being the most consumed music.

Anyway at least with regards to the West, BTS will be like ABBA was, will last few more years.

Kpop like other cultural waves will plateau as the initial generations get older.

Newer waves incorporating Kpop influence will arise.

Soloist-Ballads will never go out of fashion, for a simple reason that as people grow older their music as an universal trend prefers those sort of music.

Still Kpop-BTS will go down in history as one of the rare non-western cultural products which impacted the West.

This is the weirdest thing I have noticed these few months I have been checking on kpop stuff and korean music in general. It is very low on variety, especially when it comes to subversive music genres like rock, metal and political hiphop (for a better word).

I live in Athens, Greece, and the variety of music here is just stupefying, ranging from moden trap and rap, to eurodance and EDM in general, to rock and metal and punk (Greece has always ranked high in per capita number of bands), to jazz, soul and rnb, and then to a dozen local genres unique to greece, the balkans or mediterranean countries. And this is Greece of only 10 million people, not a country in the size of France, or Germany or the UK or Japan.

Do you have any suggestions why this is for SK? I personally have two hypothesis. 1) the crackdown of subversive/political music in the 80s by the political establishment and the government and 2) the fact that koreans don't seem to grasp the ethos that is carried within genres like rock, metal, punk, jazz, rap and hiphop etc.

PS: What I mean about number 2. For example, low bap is a greek subgenre of hiphop/rap music. It was developed by the youths in the areas around the shipyards in Piraeus and Perama in the late 80s- early 90s. These are working class areas which faced a complete economic collapse in the 80s when the shipyards were shut down, thus they turned to a very political, very anti-establishment type of raw, unfiltered rap music to express their frustration. While it does not carry the racial elements of american political rap, the anti-establishment, hyper political and in your face ethos was definitely carried on in the low bap scene. Bands & artists from the genre have never shied away from expressing political opinions or calling out politicians by name. I have not met anything similar to that in korean rap I have come across so far, mainstream or otherwise.

P.S there is a LOT of indie music there but Kpop fans much like western Pop fans only care about the charts so they don't talk about it. And I started out as a Khiphop fan back in like 2007(though I dabbled in kpop since 2001) because it had the essence of 90s Hip Hop here in America though I think it was a little more underground than popular Korea.
