Kpop has yet to close the gap that BTS have created. Why is that?

  • Though its been half a decade, BTS still reigns supreme with no one getting close enough to close the gap fully. Kpop as a whole seems to be getting more popular thanks to BTS and the exposure they have created for the genre but individually groups appear stagnant in comparison. A recent article I read stated that in order for kpop to become mainstream with impact, around 10-20 groups need to be at or within the level of BTS. Its been five years.... how much longer does it need to be for kpop groups to catch up? Or is there a reason why they haven't thus far? Interested in hearing your thoughts.

This sounds so unrealistic, whoever wrote that was definitely exaggerating. And honestly I don't see it happening anytime soon.

I think BP could have a chance of catching up, but eh... sadly their company doesn't put as much effort to make that happen.

the article was pretty in-depth, if I find it I will link it here because it was pretty interesting

20 groups is too much. I think 5 groups is enough.

BTS is the most abnormal thing I've seen in music since I've been able to use the internet. An act (a group that doesn't sing in English no less) that is still growing well over 8 years after debut and is still breaking their previous records and setting higher and higher goals for future groups? I don't get it. And I'm unsurprised to see that it's still baffling news media looking for quick clicks.

I won't say that it can't happen, I'm not a clairvoyant. But it is getting harder as BTS keeps getting better at streaming numbers and their physicals are nothing to sneeze at either, just look at their back catalogue sales.

yeah, i agree 20 does sound like too much, but apparently that number was determined based on the financial impact BTS has on the US market. But yeah BTS is an anomaly that keeps growing, so I can see why it would take a lot of groups to reach that equivalent

    Well, it's because...

    Their music is beautiful.

    Their choreo, mesmerising!

    Their personalities, super relatable.

    Their stage presence, fantastic.

    And great group dynamics

Plus, they're super humble and funny..

  • While some kpop groups are selling better than ever before the gap hasn't closed, it's actually gotten bigger. Why that is, I do not care...

I’ve been around for so many massive massive moments in music at this point and with very rare exceptions, the enormous blow-ups in success burn out so quickly, particularly with boy or girl groups. Sometimes, after a long break, they come back and achieve a different kind of success. But I have never NEVER seen anything like what has happened with BTS. Add in the language barrier and the West’s racism issues, and it is even more incredible.

I’m not going to say it will never happen again, because of course it might - no-one can predict the future, but I certainly believe this to be a once in a generation kind of success story.

  • When I said "I don't get it", I meant that there is no one concrete reason that can be agreed upon.

  • Groups are just beginning to to be 1M or 2M sellers.. and BTS has been doing that for ages now. Even paved way takes some time, so maybe we will be seeing some decent global chartings for BGs next?

yup, im curious to see if these increased sales means increased global visibility but I guess that depends on where the sales are happening huh

  • idk. bts is really a rare pokemon with impact. maybe, the next big thing just debuted or will debut in the future.

current groups, unless others will step up stat wise and non-stat wise in korea and globally, it will take 5 years or more probably for others to catch-up in all areas?

    non-stat samples

any group near to bts that had gdp impact just 4-5 years into their career? or had korean law changed? or has been awarded by a medal? or has been the cover of time magazine twice? or had become ambassador for love yourself?

  • Just for argument sake. Do you guys believe neglecting the Korean market will come back to bite them? They did a couple of variety shows but for musical performances (outside of award performances) I would say the US and Japan got most of them in the past year

  • i mean its not that easy to go from 2 mil. to 30.

nah fam they been up since go ;(

  • the more popular you are the more exposure you get and vice versa. so that creates a snowball effect. its hard to gain as much fans as someone promoted by big brands, attending big events, working with other popular artists and getting a lot of media attention. thats why the most popular groups gain the most fans

  • the more popular you are the more exposure you get and vice versa. so that creates a snowball effect. its hard to gain as much fans as someone constantly getting big sponsorships and media attention. thats why the most popular groups gain the most fans

But BTS weren't always so popular, in fact they were at the bottom so essentially that miracle could happen to another group, especially considering how much easier it is now for that sort of exposure

  • It’s just in the west tho. Kpop Groups don’t need the west if they can still make money in Asia… as it has always been lol.

My question is more about global impact rather than west vs Korea and if any group or groups can actually close the gap with BTS or not

  • NCT been closing it sales wise.

but BTS also hasent put out a normal ass album in over 2 years, so yea

how much is NCT selling? With BTS they sell 2 mil + with one version, 3 mil + with two versions, 4 mil+ with four versions....you are right about not knowing how much they would sell now with the growth of their fanbase since we haven't had a typical cb in a while. But is NCT comparable to those numbers?

  • Some bgs might be selling a lot lately but the harsh truth is they are still pretty irrelevant outside of specific asian countries, which is where most of their sales come from, so no I personally don't see it happening at all. Kpop is still very niche in the west and will probably remain like that
