Companies should prioritize Japanese promotions over US ones

  • In my honest opinion and a proven fact that Japan is more profitable for kpop than the US.

How many korean artist have got a RIAA certifications: 3 and 4 if we include the Baby Shark one šŸ„“

How many korean artist have got RIAJ certifications: More than 4 for sure.

How many korean artist have done US stadium shows: 1

How many korean artist have done Japan dome shows: More than 1 definitely.

Itā€™s way easier to get a stable and solid fanbase in the Japan than in the US. The US is even harder for western artist most of them rely on GP not fandom and itā€™s obvious GP donā€™t eat up kpop.

I mean is fine if labels do it and try but honestly many donā€™t even prioritize a stable and solid fanbase in Korea and yet trying to get into the US scene.

If you donā€™t do well as a korean artist IN Korea is hard to do it well in the US, not impossible anything can happen at this point, but hard.

  • I'm sorry I don't understand this reasoning. I am told ad nauseum on akp that 2gen idols have been doing it big in the US since forever ago and that they paved the way for kpop to the US. Clearly that means getting a foothold in the west all these years later must be super easy...

    My two cents.....

    I agree with this.

Like for example, Seventeen already have a stable fanbase in China and Japan, so they're slowly beginning to promote in the West. If that doesn't work out, they can always fall back on their massive fanbase in Asia. I think most companies should try this instead of throwing their group into the West with no Asian fanbase to fall back on.

That's where Ateez's company failed imo....

Ateez surely has big international presence and respect from many people in the industry but not a strong presence in S.K

I don't want them to end up like GOT7 (at least they had Thailand as one of their major markets)

  • i agree but bts did so much in the us so now everyone just wants a taste of that western fame. they donā€™t care if theyā€™re flopping in their own country or even japan for that matter, but as long as they top the billboard charts itā€™s all good

i still think when you start a group, you need to push them more in korea and japan. thatā€™s where you start getting a core fanbase and then you promote them in the west. or you could just do both side by side. now groups are being debuted just to target the western market itā€™s gotten so weird. but i guess kpop has changed a lot since 2017. maybe priorities shifted with that change?

i think kq finally understood where they went wrong. getting them in kingdom is a good sign because theyā€™re still extremely nugu in korea but have one of the strongest fanbases internationally. there needs to be a balance and iā€™m glad theyā€™re finally getting some kind of foothold in korea

Yeah the Kingdom move was a step into the right direction. Hope that brings lot of new fans in Korea.

  • 100% agree. First build a huge fanbase in Asia then move west. The asian fandom can help with voting and winning throphies in Asia/ Korea. For example, JYP is doing ITZY and Stray kids dirty. ITZY needs to debut in Japan and Stray Kids needed to built a stronger fanbase in Korea first before JYP was trying to push them for the west.

  • Blame it on the Korean media that doesn't support BTS's growth well and how difficult it is. So kpop companies think only of ease and do not know that the majority are lovers of kpop in general and not of a certain group. If these companies want loyal fans they must risk their concept, but we are going back to the beginning of 2012 where the songs were more important than supporting a certain group. So only in Asia can we see more loyal fans

ITZY indeed charted on Billboard 200 But what happened next week? Free fall because to have longevity you MUST have a solid fanbase.

Exactly, you need to at least have a solid fanbase in one country to even consider to get push in the US.

People donā€™t really seem to understand how hard is to chart on Billboard charts.

  • Companies probably believed it was easy to break into the US market now that BTS had succeeded. Plus, US Labels thought they would hit the same jackpot if they just sign some other groups from Kpop but the problem other companies seem to always fail to address is that the difference between BTS and other groups was that BTS had demand prior to US promos. Wings debuted in BB200 at no.26(the highest for a Korean act) and they had been charting on BB200 since 2015 and BTS did this without any physical album distribution. Pretty sure US interviews started during Spring day era which entered Bubbling under H100 (I'm not sure though if they were already nominated for the Paper award during this time). Plus, Wings tour was the only tour whose US leg that actually earned a profit for Korean acts. And then, Love Yourself Trilogy happened. So, I think Companies should check for demand before diving-in head first into the whole American dream.

ITZY should be able to crack the West, all now English speakers in the group, great songs which now have extremely good English versions.... it's all there maybe team up with a Western label, the product is perfect but you do need the proper MVs for the English versions I feel.

WHY YOU SHOULDN'T HATE ON IDOLS

    1. They are young people trying their best in a competitive industry.

    2. You don't know what other pressures they are under, company mistreatment, diet, lack of success, not earning, long hard hours, family problems etc.

    3. They have worked for years towards a dream to entertain us and offer it up pretty much free if you factor in streaming, Youtube MVs, reality shows.

    4. We all know what can happen in extreme cases, mental health problems and even suicide (Sulli)
