1. KPOP is not even mainstream in South Korea itself and kpop fans are not favored even there

2. very few kpop artists managed to break that barrier in SK

3. Only Kpop artists that the entire world has knowledge of to large extent would be BTS

but since i am not an US army i am curious to know what is it really like in US? are BTS considered to known group? or are they considered a popular but niche. i am asking this bcos i saw many comments under the original article stating even BTS is not that popular in US and everyone looks down on kpop and kpop fans and that only bts fans think BTS is big.

edit: reading the comments here has motivated me even more in supporting BTS so they go to higher places that they deserve, seemingly how still underrated they are among gp.

Yeah, here in the U.S. not many people like K-pop....

At least from where I live here in the U.S.

Many young adults & teens (probably kids) know who BTS is, but only from the memes regarding k-pop.

The largest group of Kpop fans here are alternative teenage girls. I wouldn’t say that’s a bad thing. It just is.

Don't tell people you like kpop. For me, kpop is just a secret hobby. Not something I announce to the world. Although I wear my GD hoodie.

Yeah I’d say both BTS and Kpop are considered niche but not super niche. Like it could change in a couple of years.

Disclaimer: I'm not from the US.

This is the first time I see it associated with nerds. I usually see it associated with teenage girls. I only personally know 2 fans of K-pop: a guy I met in college (fan of BP) and my friend's teenage little sister (fan of BTS).

BTS is viewed like a boyband so a lot of people think their fan base is teenage girls.

Kpop in general is very niche. It's not mainstream and you probably won't hear any kpop artist apart from BTS played on the radio.

Since when was KPOP associated with nerds? At least here, it's associated with a predominantly female teen fanbase. KPOP is seen here the same way 1D and Justin Bieber were seen back in the early 2010s(but prolly to a lesser extent).

But if you asked anyone to name a KPOP group, the first answer would most likely be BTS. BP are also known among people who use social media regularly and engage in pop culture.

KPOP as a whole, is still seen as a niche "trend". It's not mainstream at all, maybe BTS, but that's pretty much all. Most of the time if you tell a non-fan that you're a fan of KPOP, you'll get mocked and clowned.

I am from the US.

I feel like by "nerd" they really mean "geek". Nerds are usually associated with being really smart overachievers whereas geeks are enthusiast fans of non-mainstream things (comic books, video games, D&D, anime... although most of those are niche mainstream now). I'm not gonna quibble over that too much because often in media the terms are used interchangeably.

But anyway... it is an extremely niche genre in the US. It is nowhere near mainstream. It could be argued that while BTS is a well known name here they aren't technically mainstream. Many people know that BTS is a popular group and not American, but most people couldn't tell you anything about them or even that they're Korean (seriously most people think Chinese or Japanese). I think younger people who are more into pop culture probably easily know who they are, but John Q. Public is lost af about BTS and K-Pop in general.

To compare it so something here, it would be like anime only smaller than that. K-Pop fans are probably looked down on more than anime fans in the geek hierarchy.

K-pop isn’t mainstream at all. It’s still pretty niche here and I live in Canada.

Like I met a few kpop fans and they hide it and aren’t that open due to people questioning them and judging them just for liking the genre. But instead of nerdy, K-pop fans are deemed weird from what I’ve seen.

Then with how toxic and wild most K-pop fans are on Twitter it probably escalated the hate we get as a whole. So the stereotype of K-pop fans have grown quite a lot from how big the community has grown.
