Should Nayeon from twice be considered an IT girl?

  • Is Nayeon an IT girl? 48

    1. Yes! (9) 19%
    2. No! (30) 63%
    3. Not sure! (9) 19%

Personally I’ve always considered her an IT girl especially during 3rd gen peak days and was suprised when most of you said she wasn’t!

  • I like Nayeon, but I think people use the word "it girl" too freely. I think Nayeon had the chance to become one, but JYP never really gave her the push to become one. She does have star power as we can see with her solo song 'Pop' performing as well as it did during the supposed Twice "Flop era". I think an idol needs to be more than just a popular member in a popular group to be an it girl.

I think the major categories to determine if somebody is an "it girl" is brand deals, influence. chart performance and sales, easy to recognize, most talked about, attracts a lot of haters, and there can't be a debate about status. It shouldn't be a subjective topic if an idol is an it girl because it should be a no doubt type of thing.

  • Is she not?

She's not as big as the others but I assume she is as well

Wasn't POP a huge hit as well, even bigger than Twice's normal comebacks

  • Maybe in South Korea.

It was not quite the flop era tho. The group still charted top 10 prior to pop.

And there is a factor of curiosity, people would have a bit of anticipation about popular members of popular groups first solo attempt. Most of them had pretty good results.

  • No one in twice has that IT factor and that’s ok.

It’s the same with Sullyoon from NMixx as well. They’re pretty but not IT girls and that’s ok.

Almost like JYP deliberately chooses idols like that lol. Idols that work well in a group but don’t really have that individual star factor.

You're completely wrong about Twice's supposed lack of "it factor," and that's not ok, but we're used to your bad takes by now.

Inherent "it factor" has nothing to do with it. JYPE didn't choose idols without it, they purposely sabotaged the ones who have it.

  • idols with "it" shine even if their label doesn't push them.

What do you mean by "shine?" Multiple members of Twice have already shown every indication that they could have been BIG had JYPE not held them back, but there was zero chance of that actually happening without the label's cooperation. No one makes it big in this industry all by their lonesome. The biggest names were all propped up by someone.

  • The proof is in the pudding popper lol

The proof that JYPE can't cook? Not Twice's fault.

Yup this is the truth. If you have the IT factor you’ll shine no matter what. No one in twice has this.

They have the IT factor as a group yes but not as individuals.

That must be why all these brands started snatching them up the first chance they got, when everyone said they're past their prime and no longer marketable. Now imagine if JYPE hadn't been actively denying them solo gigs at their peak. There wouldn't be any crumbs left for the other supposed "it girls," and haters like you wouldn't be able to say anything.

  • I don’t think she’s an it girl in SK. To me an it girl is someone who utterly captivates the public’s attention, who goes viral for the most random of things and causes new trends/items to sell out just because she’s seen with them. I think there’s only a handful of it girls at any one time.

  • The proof that JYPE can't cook? Not Twice's fault.

getting “brand” deals doesn’t make you an IT girl every other idol is getting brand deals lol.

Well if everyone does it, then I guess there are no "it girls!" :clown:

Nayeon has outlasted many idols who were labeled IT girls like Irene, Seolhyun and Somi. She is still popular and has a successful solo career. How many idols who received the IT girl title can say that?

... several, and Irene happens to be one of them. ?(

  • Ella (Meovv), Ahyeon (babymonster),I think 3rd is from Hearts2Hearts. It does seem odd that people are trying to force "it girl" tag with 5th gen when none of them qualify. It will take years for that to happen.

I think being talked about is the most basic criteria for IT girl.

Ella was definitely being talked about because of her visuals (pre debut) but don't think she stands out in the group any more.

Ahyeon definitely got a lot of bad press and still gets it. She's a contender but hasn't had positive influence as yet to counter the bad press. YG is not even trying.

SM was definitely pushing at least three other girls for IT girl in H2H but Ian stood out immediately based on her performance on stage. She ended up on a variety show famous of her blinking 😆. She's the one I see with the most potential.

Irene's downfall was self-inflicted. Seolhyun was dragged down by Mina's bullying accusations. Somi...well she signed with TBL. All 3 fell off, but Nayeon was never at the level of those 3 at their peak.

  • An "IT person" is temporary, the instant the person became an "IT person" is generally remembered over the years. ALL "IT persons" are replaced, some quicker than others and you can have more than 1 "IT persons".

You can dismiss qualities of being a Singer, Rapper, Dancing or looking good because these are just basic skills or traits of Idols. Any pre-debut popularity is also irrelevant because they're still stuck in a bubble, potential has nothing to do with being an "IT person".

In general in SK, an "IT person" is usually based on a character or personality or actions (real or acted) that hits the main Korean media as being noteworthy. It's both a blessing and a curse as often it could be the only thing they are remembered by.

    TWICE examples of "IT Girls"

    Sana Sha Sha Sha.

When you have critically acclaimed Actor, Liam Neeson and the Actresses for Suicide Squad doing "Sha Sha Sha" on Korean Television then you know the level you need to be at.

    Nayeon Bunny Hat Trend.

Notorious for her front teeth, during a fan meeting she wore this particular hat which was captured by fans, it would soon go viral.

  • Those are examples of viral moments. Being an "it girl" doesn't require a viral moment, it merely helps. Tzuyu was Twice's original "it girl" despite not having any one particular moment that blew up.

Being an IT person REQUIRES a VIRAL moment because it means that anyone that is popular is an IT Person.

Dahyun carried the KKAP personality from Jo Kwon aka Kkap Kwon while Tzuyu was just a pretty member of a group that was called "Pretty girl next to the pretty girl next to the pretty girl....."

As I've said, being good looking doesn't make you an IT person as it shows your company chose the right look.
