I know this is some rage bait thread, but let me entertain you.
I’d agree if Kpop was as popular in the West as it is in Asia, but it’s not. The first gen opened the doors in Asia, the second gen popularized and cemented Kpop in the region, and the third gen carried on the legacy. So, did Bp and Bts really do more than the second gen? Where exactly? They're the most popular kpop groups ever, yes... but it's only benefiting them (probably their juniors to some degree) rather the whole kpop community like in the past.
This decade, you know who these Kpop companies and groups should thank? TikTok. People don’t want to admit it, but it’s literally a game changer for Kpop to gain fans and overcome the language barriers
data metrics criteria weighting...blah blah blah
you can lead a horse kpop fan to a thread but you can't make them join the dicussion lol
Yup.
In the West? Definitely. In Asia? Absolutely not.
Agree.
Most of 2nd gen's contributions are just reheat of 1st gen. There are only 2 interesting ideas that help overall growth of kpop in 2nd gen: large groups from Super Junior and hook song from Wonder Girls.
BTS and BP changed kpop more than that. Let's see:
- BTS single-handely created the biggest Kpop company ever,
- BTS invented the practice where idols interact with fans on social networks. 2nd gen idols did use social networks but the major way of communication back then was hand-written letters. Y'all don't notice it but it changed the idol-fan relationship forever,
- BP made everyone want to be luxury brand ambassadors,
[sarcasm]
COVID did more than BTS and BP as proven by the multi-million Album Selling Groups since that point and BTS and BP were largely under hiatus.
But...
Kpop Demon Hunter did more than COVID !!!!!
[/sarcasm]
It's just a dumb thing to give credit to an obvious growth which arguably could start with Psy's Gangnam Style.
Especially when KDH took Kpop out from the niche it still was under COVID, BTS and BP as KDH made Kpop genuinely cross demographics.
EDIT:
Let's be honest here, BTS and BP are the boy and girl version of each other, in the meantime, TWICE is the literal Girl Next Door with arguably Seventeen being the Boy Next Door and that's just the start of other Kpop Groups that have contributed to the growth of Kpop since 2015.
EXO is arguably the pinpoint of the genuine global launch of Kpop Idols, like all 3rd Gen Groups, they were gifted that position by the previous generations.
Not this shit again... 2025 is really that borefest?🤣
I'm gonna say what I said millions of times. There's no BTS and Blackpink without the FIRST and SECOND generation. You can argue all day, but they wouldn't exist without them, just like neither of you would exist without your parents.
The only growth "THEY" achieved is Kpop is more toxic than ever.
Hon, BTS is not even the 10th group who did that. The first was SNSD and Wonder Girls.
Not related to your comment, but many people forget something:
A Kpop group influenced you to be interested in something doesn't equal with REAL INFLUENCE on Kpop in general!
