ADP's Woochan is under fire for apparently being homophobic

  • Woochan of the co-ed K-pop group ALLDAY PROJECT has come under fire from international fans after remarks made during a live broadcast sparked accusations of homophobia.

During a fan interaction session on August 30, a viewer left the comment, “Brother, let’s date.” Woochan responded, “You call me brother, but how can you date me? I’m not like that. No, it’s not possible.”

Clips of the exchange quickly spread across social media and prompted sharp criticism from overseas fans. Many argued that his words reflected a dismissive or derogatory stance toward homosexuality and bisexuality.

Some fans commented, “Now I understand why so many companies restrict idols early in their careers because without it, situations like this arise.” Others wrote, “He could have just laughed it off, but saying ‘I’m not like that’ really came across as homophobic.”

Domestic reactions, however, were more divided. Some netizens defended Woochan, saying, “It is too much to brand someone a homophobe over a single remark” or “It did not seem hateful to me.” Others criticized his reaction and suggested he should have avoided showing discomfort altogether.

The controversy highlights once again how a brief comment can spark global debate. It also underscores the need for K-pop artists, whose careers increasingly extend beyond Korea’s borders, to remain cautious and sensitive in their words and actions.

    What do you think?

  • this needs to be normalized :meme-kek:

    It won't ever be, sadly.

I'm taking a semi break from kpop and I don't know all the details on Jimin 's "scandal" but even if hybe admitted they were in a relationship his fans are still unhinged. Kpop fans and delulu fans in general are dangerous people.

Why can't they be normal? You don't have a chance with your fave ffs, accept it and move on. And be happy if he's happy. But it can't work like that it seems.

I wish all bts members who are in relationships go out publicly and admit it. I'm specifically talking about them because they are so huge, they can survive the "scandal". Yes, i get that it's private matter but do it for the greater cause lol. We need to start somewhere. We need to normalize it. It's time.

  • The part where he is translated as saying "How could you even think that?" can definitely trigger some people into thinking he's homophobic.

I was about to say it, this part was really a turn off. I don't know If he is homophobic, because labeling someone like that is more complex, but the way It was worded — even If It's a mistake due to language or a one-off case — was homophobic.

  • The part where he is translated as saying "How could you even think that?" can definitely trigger some people into thinking he's homophobic. It definitely raised my eyebrows.

I won't say he is homo or queerphobic but I will definitely not be tuned into ADP now. Both him and the other guy have pissed me off.

While I agree with the fact that English isn't his first language AND the fact that fans really need to stop with the "date me" comments, I also have to agree with these sentiments. These days, homophobia is still so common. Especially with how much hate groups like XLOV get for being gender non-conforming. That doesn't mean it's fair to automatically assume the worst in idols, but yeah this comment of his was very worrisome... It makes sense people would rather just keep their distance from him rather than potentially get invested in his work.

Exactly the "how could you even think that" almost feel like he felt trigger that someone from the same sex could even ask him to date

    When it's not that deep

So that's why i said we can't say he's homophobic cuz he didn't show any disgust or hate towards gay people and we don't know him personally to know his beliefs

But it could have been worded much better to come out as less "aggressive" in his answer

  • Also isn't this guy have a rapper background ?

Not saying that he is homophobic

But i could understand why people could think of him like that with this comment, plus his background and the fact that he's korean

Korean is still a very homophobic country

And the rap industry is one of the most homophobic industry ever in any country, it's the industry where toxic men are considered as cool and manly

So putting all these things side by side and now his comment i can understand how some people could have interpret it this way

  • Kpop fans seem to think they idols are all gay and say this weird shit. He didn’t say anything homophobic. He just doesn’t want to date a man. That isn’t a homophobic position.

  • I don't see this as being homophobic but I can see why some feel a way about him saying "how could you even think of dating me?" Also, do we know how accurate the translations are?

I think there needs to be better boundaries set when interacting with an idol on livestream. I think we shouldn't put idols on the spot by saying stuff like "will you date me"I guess the idol can ignore the message, but there needs to be an improvement with how people interact with idols. I've noticed there's a trend of fans acting inappropriate on livestreams and fan calls.

People hate this group? I don't know much about them but I thought their music sounded good when it appeared on spotify. I did see some posts about idols not doing challenges with them.

exactly. also his tone of disgust doesn't help his case.

it's tru that fans need to tone down the parasocial stuff in general, and obviously publicly acknowledging you're straight =/= being homophobic, but the way he immediately became overly defensive and lowkey offended for no reason, you can easily read between the lines. wouldn't have had that same reaction if the person asking was a girl lbr.

recently sth similar happened with chenle and he was way more respectful about it

(for context, chenle and nct dream members in general have tons of shipper fans and they are way too invasive)

plenty of male idols get love declarations and flirty fancalls from fanboys and most of them react respectfully. doesn't mean they're not homophobic, but at least they disguise it well lol. this dude didn't even try. that group is full of douchebags :skull:

Are you assuming they're all dating non-celebrities? Or did you not think that part through? Even if their partners could survive the scandal, the hate would be tremendous.

It may be toxic, but at the end of the day, the perceived availability of idols makes the Kpop world go 'round. However, that isn't the only reason they don't go exposing their relationships all willy nilly. There are other factors to consider.

Yeah, with Tarzzan and his whole get-up that many find to be offensive, if not just insanely corny. Some also dislike Annie for being from a chaebol family. Tarzzan seems to be the main issue people have with the group, though. At least from what I've seen.

my bad lol. I think I quoted your post wrong. It was more about xlov

  • my bad lol. I think I quoted your post wrong. It was more about xlov

Omg lol no that was my fault haha. I didn't read closely enough and literally forgot most of what I posted. Yeah, some people call XLOV members ugly and harass them for their styles and even perceived sexualities. I know that stuff is unfortunately common in kpop, but since XLOV does make an effort to be androgynous and has friends that attend pride, it hits different imo.

The company also needs to stop selling these idols as a sort of customizable product with no backbone. Idols shouldn't need to "apologize" for having a personal life.

  • I’ll start by saying I don’t have any real interest in this group. Their music isn’t to my taste, and honestly the way Tarzzan behaves is really off-putting. Personally, I feel Woochan is better on his own and that being in this group actually holds him back. On top of that, I don’t think the members as a whole know how to properly handle PR.

That said, regarding this specific situation, I watched the clip myself. While I can’t confirm the translation word-for-word, what I noticed is that he didn’t look disgusted, though his tone did come off a little sharp. It seemed like the comment caught him off guard, and since he was trying to read everything in a smaller live (assuming that's the case), he probably felt the need to respond.

I do understand why some people were taken aback. Saying “I’m not like that” can sound dismissive or critical, especially to international fans who are more sensitive about how idols speak on LGBTQ+ topics. He could have just laughed it off or moved on without showing discomfort.

But I don’t personally think this moment proves he’s homophobic, it feels more like poor phrasing and a lack of awareness of how his words might land with a global audience. Still, it’s a reminder that idols have to be more careful now since even small remarks can blow up quickly.

No, I'm assuming most of them or not all date celebs because that's their circle. If rumors and proof were true tae and Jennie date/d. Look at what's happening to Jimin. His ex (?) Is an actress. HE, not hybe, should have commented publicly, admitted they were (?) dating and asked his fans to respect his choice. You should protect a person you love/d.

If they are not celebs they should still be able to say that but not reveal their significant other identify.

The hate would be tremendous because there's no one to protect them. Going publicly and standing by your partner is what normalizing is. Public should get used to hearing celebs dating.

You can have a platonic crush. Hell, a lot of women have a celeb crush on gay men for various reasons (he's a nice human and played a character they like. Current example would be Jonathan Bailey). Or lesbians having a crush on straight women. But don't be delulu. Separate fantasy from real life and wish your fave happiness.

That and stop making idols talking to their fans like they are their girlfriends. This is so creepy and stupid. I don't get how those lunatics don't get that their fave cannot be everyone's boyfriend. To use Jimin as an example here again; he has millions of fans, he most certainly isn't a boyfriend of every single one of them :clown:
