Taeyeon hates Kpop Demon Hunters!

  • No, she's not, she just didn't like it, and Knetz lost their shit!

Don't worry Tae, I'm with you, even tho I will watch the movie in 2026, probably. 🤣

So I wondered what the genre was. When I looked it up, it was categorized ‘For Kids.’ - Taeyeon

    Quote from Knetz on Theqoo
    • “It’s okay if it’s not your thing, but dismissing it as being just “for kids” feels unnecessarily condescending…”
    • “Korean culture content is doing well—do we really need to spread negativity? Negative takes are piling up here too, like all these comments talking sh*t about how they didn’t like it either… Not a good look.”
    • “Just curious—doesn’t the tiger appear before the Saja Boys with the hats?”
    • “Tearing it down like that just makes you seem unpleasant, tbh.”
    • “I get she doesn’t have to like it but dismissing it as “for kids” does feel condescending for sure.”
    • TBH, I only like the soundtrack. The movie itself is for kids, LOL.”
    • “I couldn’t get through it either…”
    • “People debating whether or not she’s dissing KPop Demon Hunters with a conversation she had with her fans like 10 days ago? So ridiculous, LOL. Even top box office movies get bad reviews, why act like it’s some crime?”
    • “I tried watching it because everyone said it was popular, but it just wasn’t for me and I stopped…”
    • “Same, I tried to push through but gave up watching.”
    • “Wow, this was exactly me. LOL. I turned it off because it felt too childish… the characters’ actions and reactions were so exaggerated on purpose—it just gave off this forced, can’t-put-my-finger-on-it vibe that really put me off.”
    • “But did she really have to say it like that? It’s not just a private convo with friends—it’s a public space where everyone can see it…”
      • “Well, no. It was a space just for fans, and fans were the ones who asked the question lol.”
    • “It’s totally fine to post a negative review—why are people overreacting?”
    • “This is basically the new-gen Frozen, LOL It’s made to hit everything teenage girls would love, so of course it is childish.”
    • Why are so many people acting like they got personally offended?”
    • “Just move on like “oh I guess that’s how she feels,” no need to be so extra.”
    • “Are we not allowed talk about personal taste anymore? What is this, North Korea?”
    • “If she didn’t even know about Derpy, she probably didn’t even watch half of it. Must’ve genuinely not been her vibe. Haha.”
    • “Since she is a K-Pop idol herself, maybe it felt extra cringey to watch an entire movie about it, LOL.”
    • “Doesn’t Derpy show up before the guy puts on the hat and poses? Did she maybe only watch the clips?”
    • “I got the gist of it from clips posted everywhere, so I didn’t even bother watching LOL I’ve tried other hyped dramas before and they all flopped for me—Descendants of the Sun, Goblin, Crash Landing on You, etc. So…”

Giving an honest opinion about a movie is suddenly spreading negativity? Lol

She didn't even say anything harsh, these people are overreacting ;(

  • She gave the type of answer close minded people give lol.

These are the type of people I would dislike and not associate with IRL :pepe-joy:

I mean answers like “oh the story was boring” or you know something like that I value but “oh that’s a kids movie” is the type of response people who have absolutely no personality will say.

Seeing as she’s not my friend and is an idol ofc this has no relevance in the grand scheme of things other than making her appear like she has the personality of a cardboard.

  • I haven't seen this movie and have no plans to, but I'm surprised she's dismissing it for that reason, because I'm sure if you looked up the genre for her own group's music it would say the same thing.

    :hehe3:

She didn't even say anything harsh, these people are overreacting ;(

This is the basic Kpop mentality, if you have a different opinion, you're a hater.

Meanwhile, Taeyeon about GEE back in the days. Many people don't know how blunt SNSD members are.🤣

Lehet, hogy egy kép erről: 3 ember és , szöveg, amely így szól: „Music is IS so so magical! I love how it can take you to to another place. For example, Gee is playing in this room, so now I am going to a different room.”

Mate, this is what she was referring to. She didn't say the movie is crap because it was made for kids.

    pasted-from-clipboard.png

You know what it's all clicking into place. Isn't there a running joke that whatever SNSD song Taeyeon didn't like ended up being a smash hit like Gee and others? I guess now it makes sense why Golden is getting PAKs.

Exactly! Now, KDH is going to be a bigger hit. 🤣

Idk imo it is indeed close minded response to give. This is one of the biggest movie your country has released in a while and it’s being appreciated and everywhere and you dismiss it as a “kids movie” ofc you will face backlash.

It’s better to either keep quiet or give some legitimate criticism. Being condescending will get you hate. No doubt about that.

Imagine if everyone dismissed SNSD or idol music as “kids music”. In fact this frequently happens IRL people do dismisses all idol related things are being for kids. And kpop fans do get angry at it a lot as well.

  • Yes and she’s condescending for that. That’s the whole point.

There is plenty of animated media which has a wide audience range aka kids and family that can be consumed by anyone.

Like I said if you give that as a reason you show your personality in many ways. Thats all there is to it.

  • I haven't watched that movie. (maybe not yet)

I admit that when I first heard about the movie, I thought it perhaps was a PG-13 kind of movie for some reason.

But well... knowing that it is a children's movie doesn't make me go "Oh, it is a children's movie. I'm too old for this."

Like I enjoy some children's movies, e.g. I really liked Coco (but maybe because it was better than I expected)

Or the kind of children's movies that I like are the sort of movies that people of all ages can enjoy. (which is why this is a "kids & family movie")

I mean, sure, she could've worded it better, but it's not like she owes anyone an in-depth explanation. She doesn't have to keep quiet either. It is quite literally a kids movie, and while I do agree that it's not right to brush off things as "something for kids" or believe that "it's for kids therefore it's stupid", but besides that she clearly didn't enjoy the movie enough to keep watching it. Maybe there are other things for kids she enjoys, I don't know. I literally don't know her.

Saying she might have the personality of cardboard is just as immature, if not more so, than her brushing the movie off as a kids movie. And just because this movie is "the biggest movie her country has released in a while" doesn't mean she owes it anything... ;(

Who cares. It's not like she ever hid her disdain for childish things.

  • Giving an honest opinion about a movie is suddenly spreading negativity? Lol

she didn't say her honest opinion, she trashed it even tho she didn't even finished it. she wanted to sound so edgy, calling it a "kids film". even she explained what she didn't like that would be fine but she didn't do that. she sounds like a person who thinks so highly of herself.

  • film was made by sony but people of korean heritage was involved in making it. music and choreos were done by kpop professionals. korean or people of korean heritage voiced the film. director was born in seoul and she was raised in canada. the film is in every way influenced by korean culture.

This is a very good way of saying, "it's not a movie from South Korea."

  • using kids movie as insult is hilarious. all disney classics are kids movies and they are loved by everyone. they are classics for a reason.

you also have people who say "it's not a good film but it's a kids movie so it's fine". kids aren't stupid. film is good or it isn't, it doesn't matter who is it made for.

the reason why kpop demon hunters is loved is simple: it's a good story and characters, good animation and korean culture. pixar's ellio was released in theaters and epically flopped. people got tired of stores like that.

one might think the film is not for them but that doesn't mean the film is trash. everyone likes reservoir dogs but when the violence started, which was at the very beginning lol, i stopped watching it. i didn't say the film was trash, i said it's not for me. like you said, the way she's speaking it's the same way people talk about kpop. literally all of my friends think i'm listening to music made for 12 yo kids. she should know better.

I think we're just assuming a lot based on a few short sentences.

"I did watch it but I didn’t think it was for me. Like I got chills down my neck… Made me feel weird. It was the worst when the boys started posing in gat." - This is fine. She doesn't think the film was for her, that's a normal response. She explained that it made her feel weird. That's also fine.

"Oh, I’m dead, LOL." - She is engaging with the fan humorously

"There’s a tiger in it? I guess I didn’t watch it that far." - This is just her showing she didn't watch too far into the movie. Nothing bad.

"So I wondered what the genre was. When I looked it up, it was categorized ‘For Kids.’" - This could've been worded better, but it's not really enough to assume she has a bad personality or had any ill-intentions... Maybe she truly just does not like things intended for a child's audience? That's fine, that's her preference. If she is trying to be condescending, then it is what it is. But there's not really enough to go off of, in my opinion. Different strokes for different folks, as one popular allkpop user says.

No one said she has to keep quiet.

Sorry, I misinterpreted your meaning of "It’s better to either keep quiet or give some legitimate criticism". I just meant that she isn't obligated to do either of those things, because she has the right to say as much or as little as she wants. But now I see what you meant, too.

  • it's the way of saying that sony financed a film created by korean people.

Chris Appelhans (Director, Screenplay), Danya Jimenez (Screenplay), Hannah McMechan (Screenplay), Nathan Schauf (Lead Editor), Marcelo Zarvos (Main Composer), Aron Warner (Producer), Josh Beveridge (Head of Character Animation). And then there's Maggie Kang (Director, Screenplay, Story). Maybe Michelle Wong, Helen Chen, and Ami Thompson? Seems most of the people actually heading the project aren't Korean because it's not an actual South Korean project.

The hills people will die on.

  • "There’s a tiger in it? I guess I didn’t watch it that far." - This is just her showing she didn't watch too far into the movie. Nothing bad.

and yet she still trashed it. if you want to criticize a film at least finish it, it's common sense.

"So I wondered what the genre was. When I looked it up, it was categorized ‘For Kids.’" -

lion king, aladdin, little mermaid, tangled, beauty and the beast, lilo and stich, are also kids films. "for kids" means suitable for kids and family film. i'm not a kid and i don't have kids but i love it. why did she even start it in the first place? to say publicly she's above it?

she literally could have said - i tried watching it, it's not for me, but i'm glad others liked it. literally that. instead, she's condescending, trashing the film she didn't even finished.

i'll say the same as you: the hill you choose to die on.

  • i'll say the same as you: the hill you choose to die on.

Luckily, I'm not dying because I have actual facts on my side just from a basic scroll of the credits. Criticizing Taeyeon for being negative about the biggest movie from """South Korea""" in a while is obviously a ridiculous critique when the movie isn't even South Korean. As you now know.

  • and yet she still trashed it. if you want to criticize a film at least finish it, it's common sense.

Why continue watching something you're not enjoying??? Just take the review with a grain of salt if the reviewer admits to not having finished the film, or completely disregard it. You're just assuming the worst.

She didn't start it, she answered a fans question about it. Someone asked her if she watched it and these were her replies. Yes, she did watch it. She just didn't finish it. And she explained why. And the fan asked more questions and gave more details about the movie. To which she responded.

Maybe she just doesn't care for those movies you listed? She may not like family films and/or films intended for kids. I interpreted her last message as something along the lines of "Oh, I checked the genre of the movie, and it's a kids movie". Because 1) it is a kids movie. It's listed as such on netflix. And I personally believe the implication was "I don't like kids movies". But that's just me assuming she had neutral or normal intentions, combined with the fact that in the past she has bluntly stated she doesn't like stuff like this.

I don't know what her intentions were, but nobody really does because we're not in her head. I think it's just not necessarily fair to assume she's trying to be mean, especially when conversing with a fan. And I don't think it's right for anyone to insult her and label her as a rude person based on this short interaction...

  • i think you're misunderstanding. i don't think she was saying she disliked it just because the genre was kids movie, but because the movie had childish aspects that are only found in kids movies.

i think there are many movies that are made for kids but don't have a lot of childish aspects in them. kpop demon hunters definitely had a lot of silly things in it that are really only found in kids movies, which i'm assuming is what she didn't like about it

That’s how the Koreans replying also understood it as. So I think it’s more so that you’re trying to justify what she said and that’s ofc your prerogative but that won’t make it the absolute truth.

  • again, if she said - i tried it, didn't like it because it's not for me - nobody would have said nothing. but she didn't say that. she even said that "It was the worst when the boys started posing in gat." what she said is essentially "ofc i didn't like it, it's a kids film".

if she likes mentioned disney films or not is irrelevant, those are great films. they might not be for her, but they are iconic films.

her tone is the issue here and how condescending she sounds.

that's true, but even if it's not the truth, i honestly don't see much of a problem with disliking something because it is made for kids. a lot of people hate stuff like that. and even if there are great kids movies, some people just hate that kind of stuff

But at the end of the day, it's hard to read tone over text. And it's human to make mistakes sometimes, or accidentally word things harsher than you meant to, or even be unintentionally rude. We all have moments were we could've said things differently and/or in a kinder way. Nobody is going to respond perfectly to things all the time, even with simple conversations. And making a determination of someone's character based on one conversation is really unfair.

There's nothing wrong with saying "It was the worst when the boys started posing in gat". She didn't find it funny, clearly. It's normal to over-exaggerate things we like and don't like. She is just talking casually, I talk like that to my friends, especially when I am talking about something I didn't like. Regardless, it is an opinion that she is allowed to have. I don't think it makes her an edgy, condescending person for her to hate the pose scene. Though, I personally found it to be hilarious.

I could never be an idol for reasons as simple as this. Everything I say could be taken so extremely and intensely, especially when I make a normal, human error while having a conversation. That's so stressful.

I mean yeah if you’re a celebrity you have to be more cautious than a regular person that can’t be helped, they make a living out of being in public eye.

Also I really hope you don’t talk to your friends in that dismissive manner. Especially if they like a genre. If my friend called kpop kiddish and that’s why she won’t listen to it, I would indeed like her a lot less.
