do you think k-pop stans are the worst fandom?

  • are k-pop stans the worst? 40

    1. yes (11) 28%
    2. no (29) 73%

This is a sentiment that has been around for a long time on the internet but just wondering what others think as k-pop stans. I've always seen comments about how crazy and annoying k-pop stans can be. I'm just talking about k-pop fans in general not any particular groups fandom.

Honestly if I think about some of the other fandoms I've engaged with (sports, gamers, anime, various shows/movies, etc), kpop stans are definitely the most toxic lol.

This came to mind because I've been seeing a lot of posts on r/coachella about how awful kpop stans etiquette has been both at coachella and online.

If not, which fans do you think are worse?

  • Imo sports fans are the worst, here in Brazil they literally kill each other, always physically fight, are all grown ass men acting dumb so by far sport fans and in football we have so many racists cases like ?? Internet toxicity is bad, it's stressful for artists too, but I don't see this level of aggressiveness in any other "fandom" as I see in sport, specially football.

Kpop fans takes the place when it comes to sns fanwars though...

Yea I think in my head I was too focused on the online aspect. In real life, sports fans are definitely much worse. Fights always breaking out, rioting and destruction in cities after a big win. I do think online k-pop fans come off worse. I only really follow the NBA but I know soccer fans can be pretty crazy.

  • Oh boy... I remember when my country's football team was playing football against a Croatian team, and that Croatian team's fans were making fool of themselves and vandalizing stuff in the capital of my country...

Even if you limit it strictly to online communities only, sports fans are still more toxic.

You have no better person to confirm that with that me, the one who has spent years arguing with people in the biggest sports and K-Pop online communities for years.

I have exchanged many essays with many LeBron fans over the years, as his self-proclaimed biggest hater on the planet.

I'm 1000x more toxic when arguing sports.

  • but I would say maybe Kpop fans come in 1st in the online category like w the fights online and all

You think that until you see any Michael Jordan vs. LeBron James debate online.

    Your opinion will change quickly

K-Pop fans definitely get more emotional and will try to bully people with numbers unlike any community.

But sports fans are still the most toxic by a wide margin.

Let me also say that there are some natural... difference in spaces dominated by male voices vs. female voices.

  • Well I'll take your word for it since I don't dive very deep into sports and wouldn't be the best to say.

Though I do not think sports players are mentally affected by online toxicity in the same way idols are, except for Kevin Durant, who is arguably more sensitive than the average k-pop stan. I think in that sense k-pop stans online are VERY toxic, because they want their words to hurt the idols.

  • ;judgingpepe:

Did you type this knowing you now speak with the biggest Kevin Durant fan on the planet, who has been passionately defending him against all doubters and haters for the past 17 years?

    :meme-grumpy-cat:

yes I was just messing since I've seen you mention it before lol, but he is a notoriously sensitive player. He was actually my favorite player when I got into basketball, until he slithered his way to GSW.

  • I think Kpop stans are up there, possibly the worst in terms of music fandoms.

One thing that is notable for me is that the main difference with Kpop idols, is that they are held way more accountable when they do something terrible. Sure they'll still have some diehard fans who think they can do no wrong, but overall their careers are basically over. We can contrast this with people like Chris Brown, for example. Now this on it's own isn't necessarily the best indicator of how toxic a fandom is, but it can exacerbate it.

This leads me to say that the worst fandoms, by far, are those for random rich people that grew so large that it gave them political power, causing widespread real-world repercussions. Despite the truly awful, terrible, well-documented things these people have done, there are countless justifications. They also inspire people to say and do vile things, no other fandom has ruined so many lives.

IT WAS A BRILLIANT BASKETBALL MOVE AND WE CAN ALL THANK LEBRON FOR POPULARIZING BLATANT TEAM STACKING :meme-ahhh::meme-point:

2017-2018 was my peak as a sports fan

I'm talking going around the local sports bar and shit taking every LeBron fan I identified during the course of the Finals game that aired that night

    NEVER FORGET

Don't awaken a sleeping dragon in this thread multi :meme-smirk:

  • Those poor Lebron fans, they probably didn't know they were facing someone who practically debates as a hobby lol

Maybe we will be lucky to get a Durant vs Lebron matchup again this year. Oh wait.... :pepe-hehe:

  • I'm a sports fan and we're awful lmao. If you get into a debate with a sports fan it becomes awkward because sports fans will defend their take no matter what. Plus, like people mentioned ITT there's been people that have died over sports

When it comes to music I will say kpop fandom might be the worst. I am unsure if Swifties are worse because they dox people and defend Taylor no matter what but I think kpop fans do the same.

kpop fans might be in the top 5 but I think there's far worse fandom. Anime, video game fans are worse than kpop fans. Those 2 fandoms have done some weird far right stuff and attack creators because a woman is featured in a game or a person of color. I don't think I have seen kpop fans do that, so those 2 groups are worse than kpop stans

  • As a football fan, football (and sports in general) are next level trash lmao. Just watch any football match between rival clubs or countries and watch the shit hit the fan. Offensive chants in stadium, racism, fights before during and after matches, stereotypes, sore winners and losers, massive egos and everything else

Kpop is definitely up there though. Bullying, (successful) death threats, misinformation/lies, harassment, racism, sexism. Their victims are real people which makes things worse than hating fictional things like anime or games.

  • Those poor Lebron fans, they probably didn't know they were facing someone who practically debates as a hobby lol

Maybe we will be lucky to get a Durant vs Lebron matchup again this year. Oh wait.... :pepe-hehe:

Our fate was a cursed and twisted one from the beginning, because I am ALSO the biggest Michael Jordan fan you've interacted with.

So I would have had smoke for LeBron fans no matter what, or LeHomers as I lovingly refer to them.

I oftentimes call them the worst and most toxic sports fans on planet Earth. I don't even hide or disguise my hate for LeBron or his fans. I ADMIT to being a hater.

That's why I know how toxic us sports fans can get.

By the way, I've spent even MORE time debating people on the biggest anime (Hello? My username is literally YamaChan lol) and gaming forums for over two decades.

So I'm literally the perfect and ultimate subject matter expert on this topic.

    ...

WHICH IS WHY I HAD A THREAD PLANNED BUT YOU RUINED IT AND STOLE THE ENGAGEMENT METRICS THAT SHOULD BE MINE

    :meme-point:

  • MJ has some more impressive stats and accolades imo and there's something about Lebron's personality I just never liked. But I feel you can't not be impressed by him still being better than 95% of NBA players at age 40.

And hey it's not my fault k-pop stans have been disgracing themselves at coachella for the past 2 weeks, prompting me to make this. Plus AKP looked like it was hurting for a thread

  • Sports fans are much worse. Mostly because they are predominantly men (and I am one). I mentioned this before, but I've been on sports forums where people found out where members lived (literally their physical address) and threatened to harm them. Nothing brings out insanity more than sports.....

  • It is usually competition that bring toxicity. Kpop is more like art than competition. Sport is naturally more competitive which makes people often toxic. Some people make kpop look like competition which cause toxicity to this hobby.

It is the same in video games. In mmo PVE players are often really friendly and people start getting more and more toxic once you enter more competitive content. In pvp toxicity is another level, simply because people hate losing and somebody have to lose. Some people just can not handle losing without bringing countless of excuses and blaming everything else but themselves or their favorite team.

  • I'm really not a sports person, do don't move in enough circles that expose me to sports fan, but I wanna add this fandom:

    Gamers

Particularly the very vocal, very whiny, subset of gamers that are right-wing, "anti-woke", misogynistic and very vocal manbabies. Strong overlap with Anime fans. Also strong overlap with "hustle culture" bros and other nasty right wing incel circles.

Kpop fandoms are annoying and overly dramatic.

The "gamer" and other related "fandoms" are destroying an entire generation of males.

  • well that depends on what one deems "toxic" vs "weird"

one persons toxicity is another's weird

That's true. I think toxicity in kpop is the constant fighting among fans and attacking idols, see twitter. In anime community I see fighting among fans much less and criticism towards anime or their creators is overall less harsh.

  • I wouldn't say K-pop stans are the "worst" fandom. Sure, every fandom has its extreme side, but the majority of K-pop fans are just passionate people who love their idols and the music. It's easy to get caught up in the more vocal or extreme behavior online, but for the most part, K-pop stans are supportive, creative, and really dedicated to their groups. Plus, they've built this super unique and welcoming community that brings fans together from all over the world.

Like any fandom, though, there are some who take things too far if it's through trolling, hate, or getting too obsessed but that’s a tiny fraction of the whole. The reality is, most K-pop fans are just enjoying the music, the performances, and the artistry, and that's not inherently bad, right?

So nah, I wouldn’t call K-pop stans the worst. Every fandom has its ups and downs, but the good definitely outweighs the bad.

  • That's true. I think toxicity in kpop is the constant fighting among fans and attacking idols, see twitter. In anime community I see fighting among fans much less and criticism towards anime or their creators is overall less harsh.

I thought there was much more fighting between anime fans like between different shows and whatnot (but I'm not part of that fandom so I can't say for sure)

  • Not even close.

Note this is not a one time thing. Fighting and vandalism happens pretty regularly, both at huge world cup matches to some local teams match having a chance at promotion.

Also, online gamers. Holy hell, online gamers.

(console gamers are pretty tame mostly).
