Fast forward to day 2, IVE and Newjeans do their group performances. Of the awards Newjeans was nominated for, IVE get best dance, SOTY and the rookie award and AOTY goes to BTS. MAMA then invents a new award category and to give MHJ the breakout producer for her work - Newjeans - this is on day 2 mind, when normally the made up awards are done on day 1. So cue endless zooms of Newjeans trying to to get upset as they get snubbed and called a product of their producer surrounded by all the other winners. Its one thing for them not to get the day 2 awards, they debuted late and it was hard to compete with love dive, but MAMA clearly used them. They could easily have performed day 1 alone but MAMA wanted the drama and MHJ was going to give it to them. MHJ hits the roof and they've never been within sniffing distance of Mnet since. 2023, they got nominated for AOTY, SOTY, Album OTY, female dance and Best female Group. They only lost Album of the year to 17 and didn't even show up for the 4 wins. Didn't even send a recorded clip LMAO. They thanked fans on the phoning app and kept it moving. Still haven't been back to anything Mnet.

Your first mistake was thinking any MAMA award is given using a consistent, fair and unbiased criteria.

The second mistake was taking any category at the MAMAs literally. They will just make up awards and some arbitrary criteria to justify giving the award to the idols(s) of their choosing.

For years I watched Mamamoo lose the best female group vocal performance category, knowing they had few peers in that space.

The sooner you realize the reasons a winner is chosen have nothing to do with the category, the closer you are to understanding how the MAMAs actually operates.

If you think about it, MHJ's ride or die approach with NewJeans was first demonstrated her. She never let this offense go, and Mnet has been NewJeans banned every since. A bold move from a fledgling sub label against a media giant, but that's MHJ.
